Year of Plenty

Post by SAM »

It's near Lunar New Year, this make me recall an old story. :D

It is a Chinese custom to stuck red papers, which got Chinese Characters written on them around the house during the New Year festival. It is said this would bring good fortunes in the New Year. :o

A friend of mine, once got such a red paper with the Chinese words "常滿" on a huge rubbish bin inside his kitchen. I asked him what is that and what does the words mean, and he said "常滿" means "Year of Plenty" and if you stack it within the kitchen, you shall not be hungry though out the year. :o

Later another friend who know a little Chinese visit him. He had a great laugh when he saw the piece of paper on the rubbish bin. We asked him why and he explained that the piece of paper should be stick on a food storage container, but never on a rubbish bin. Since "常滿" means "Always Filled/Full".

Funny story there SAM. :)

Last year I was giving a little red envelope from my Mandarin laoshi. On the outside there were four characters that translated to "Ji Nian", and inside was a coin, or maybe two. I forgot what she told me about what it meant. I still have it somewhere around my room.

You're Chinese, correct? I'm just curious.

I'm afraid :|. I'm getting to that point in life where I get no more red envelopes (no I'm not getting married just older.) Wells, not that I'll receive many 'cause I live away from my parents.

I got a fortune coookie tonight that said 'you will be fortunate in everything.' I already know this can't possibly be true...

There are different kinds wording on those red envelope, so the exact words is hard to guess. BTW, not all of these envelopes are red in colour, some of them are some golden.

Well, that is a difficult question to answer. You see cat don't suppose to have a nationality, do they?

Well since it is a nameless island, it doesn't suppose to have a name, right?

Actually there is no such thing of fortune coookie amoung the Chinese. It's strange that you got it when you eat in a Chinese restaurant.

BYW, the wordings used in a fortune coookie use to be wordings they wrote on the red papers and stuck around the house.

I guess another good place to stuck "常滿" is on your wallet.

 Uh, sure.

The reason why I was asking is because this year is the year of the Dog, as the Chinese zodiac confirms, and my sign is the Dog. And if you are infact Chinese, I was hoping you could tell me what this year means to people over in China, who's sign is the Dog. I'm just curious.
