Galaxy Hunter - 2D Retro Shmup with RPG twist

Post by Faenrir »

Hi everyone ! I post this message to present to you "Galaxy Hunter", the game i am currently working on.
I wanted to wait until there was enough progress to post it here!
It is a retro styled shoot'em'up (some of you might recognize some of the graphics i am using as they are coming from Daniel Cook, the guy that worked on Tyrian).
Fast paced, not a bullet hell (i'm not a fan of those even though some are still awesome) and with RPG elements such as levelling, skill points, inventory system, heat system, etc.
The heat system is only used on secondary weapons and there's an option for secondary fire focus mode (slows the ship when firing them).

Here is a video trailer and some screenshots:

The game is on the steam greenlight so if you like what you see, please vote for it !

Feel free to give any kind of feedback ! I'm trying to make it the best game i can...
Currently working on gamepad support (trying to resolve a detection issue atm, but it should be ok ^^), ui redesigns, game balance and final level design. And i'm also working with a graphic artist to add some pixel art cutscenes throughout the game :)
A demo will be available as soon as possible (trying for late August) and I want the game to be on gog.com as well as steam.

You can follow the game here:

And of course on the game's website.

I knew the graphics had strangely familiar feel to them, they certainly got that Tyrian vibe. Looks very polished and colorful. The actual gameplay comes across fast and snappy, I like that.

On the other hand I'm not too keen on RPG/shop management. Any chance of more straightforward mode where you can simply blast your way through without worrying about upgrading the ship in the menus? Or is it just possible to ignore all that stuff?

Judging by Steam page it seems a demo is on its way, so I may as well give it a proper go once it's released. Good luck with the greenlight!

Thanks !
Yes, i have planned a gauntlet mode but it will probably not be included in the initial release as i have too much on my plate atm.
But it's definitely something i want to add to the game.
I also want to add a 2 player mode (for the gauntlet mode) but that will obviously have to wait until gauntlet mode is in...

Btw, i saw your game some time ago while lurking on this board and i love the style ! Haven't had time to test it yet but i definitely will in the near future :) good job !

That sounds reasonable, I understand it must be a lot of work.

One thing that usually bothers me about menu management is the way upgrade and shop menus seem to be designed solely with mouse in mind. Changing between mouse and keyboard even just momentarily between levels just feels jarring to me.

I don't mind having an option for mouse control and the current weapon equipment looks passable but is it possible to use with keyboard only? Either way I think it could be a lot more straightforward/efficient than its current iteration.

Since DANIEL COOK unlocked and turned TYRIAN graphics free, some marvelous projects were made! Magnificent art! He is the master!

Agreed!

I love it when projects use Tyrian graphics! Best of luck on your project, Faenrir.
