Touhou Kanjyuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (15)
Re: Touhou Kanjyuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (15)
Is there a physical copy available? If so, where would I get it?

She uses "simple" danmaku because only plebs waste ammo spewing bullets at air. I really appreciate the intention but ZUN's hard on for rings ruined everything.Lord Satori wrote:I'm thinking that there's some reason behind it, like it's part of her character or something. I don't think Zun would use danmaku like that otherwise.
P.S. If you didn't get hit by this you don't know SHIT about touhou

Anyone ever see that movie Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise? Well, the Pointdevice Mode in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom is exactly like that, because when you die, you can restart at a checkpoint.

That movie was a total rip off of Toaplan shmups.

I'm assuming an english translation patch is still in the works?

Is it really? Because playing the Pointdevice Mode in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom made me think so much of Edge of Tomorrow.Squire Grooktook wrote:That movie was a total rip off of Toaplan shmups.

thpatch.net has been doing the translations since Ten Desires or DDC I think. Stand-alone patches aren't made anymore, they do it through some sort of special program that links directly to the server.cave hermit wrote:I'm assuming an english translation patch is still in the works?
Somewhat related, does anyone know if an english patch for Urban Legend in Limbo has been released yet? Also is there a new replay database? Gensokyo.org stopped making new sections for replays after Ten Desires came out.

This game just destroys me, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Having fun, though - what's everyone's thoughts on Pointdevice mode?

Re: Touhou Kanjyuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (15)
IMO, this is not a shmup or danmaku, just a collection of mini-stages completely based on memorization and prior knowledge of the gimmicks about to appear on screen, being killed simply by standing in the wrong spot because a bullet spawned there or a pattern that is unpredictable is bad design. It feels like the game meant the pander to I wanna be the guy/boshi fans and speedrun streamers.CStarFlare wrote:This game just destroys me, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.Having fun, though - what's everyone's thoughts on Pointdevice mode?
Re: Touhou Kanjyuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (15)
It almost feels wrong that such an oddity is part of the main series.

Pointdevice is tough. You don't have a lot of resource in there.
On second thought there are a lot of patterns that are unbeatable on the first try but let's not pretend this isn't a thing in the series (hi, extra stages) or shooting games in general. It's just that there are more of them this time.

Yeah but extra stages were (usually) where "die once, then never again" puzzle patterns and gimmicks were usually quarantined before. Hazard telegraphing was always pretty decent to me in the main games (with a few exceptions of course :3)Formless God wrote:On second thought there are a lot of patterns that are unbeatable on the first try but let's not pretend this isn't a thing in the series (hi, extra stages) or shooting games in general. Re: Touhou Kanjyuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (15)
This game is Zun's response to all that ironic "Touhou is harder" bullshit you guys keep throwing around. Now that it actually IS harder, you complain about that. Will you ever be satisfied?
Seriously, though. I agree that point device mode needs work. You never realize how spread out certain chapters are until you play it in point device mode. I'm also anticipating that this game will take a lot longer for people to master and put out replays of. (unless there's a new site)

You're shooting at things, and there's a shit-load of bullets. I'm pretty sure that that's exactly what this game is.BeruBeru wrote:this is not a shmup or danmaku

Touhou Is Harder is just a meme in response to annoying Youtube comments and one note posters. Pretty sure most people didn't have a problem with Lunatic difficulty since it's about as hard or harder then the majority of "arcade difficulty" shmups.

of course. in fact, most of the in-game dialogue has already been translatedcave hermit wrote:I'm assuming an english translation patch is still in the works?
pretty much. even people who like shmups don't really understand trial and error, even as it's slapping them across the face a bit like a large trout. the game is just plain harder, so the patterns are just plain tougher to figure out and react toFormless God wrote:The only attack that directly spawns bullets on you (more like the area you're likely to hang around at) is the final boss's fireball one and even then it should only get you once

Some things which I should probably point out...
完全無欠モード is "flawless mode". Pointdevice is mistranslation.
According to the manual, this is the main mode of this game, although one may think Legacy Mode might be.

ZUN never actually translates anything.Elixir wrote:完全無欠モード is "flawless mode". Pointdevice is mistranslation.

Flawless mode is a much more descriptive name than Pointdevice (which means nothing).

Isn't that some ancient ass word that could mean either "savescum" or "checkpoint"
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/point-device
Also I might be terrible at video games but Extra mode seems really hard. I run into the sloooooooow bullets in the stage and I have trouble with half of the boss's attacks

it's not a translation. it's like the subtitles or the little phrases in the difficulty buttons, it's stylistic.Elixir wrote:Some things which I should probably point out...

i'm 100% certain that "pointdevice" is referring to smartphones or even mouse usage, as "pointing device" has always been used to describe both.
it's the "main mode" in the sense that the plot refers to it, but otherwise it's a typical touhou game. or rather, probably all of the main games could have checkpoints like this. putting that insanity aside, you can't even save replays in pointdevice mode.
other way around. "flawless mode" might as well be a plot-only term, as the only other meaning it has refers to "pointdevice" itself.CStarFlare wrote:Flawless mode is a much more descriptive name than Pointdevice (which means nothing).

Except pointdevice doesn't let you use a pointing device.

I'm surprised that people didn't just look up point-device.

Re: Touhou Kanjyuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (15)
OK, I've spent a little more time with this and I want to make sure I've got the right idea for scoring. The Touhou Wiki lists the chapter bonus as
Chapter Graze × Shooting Down % × 50
But this can't be right - from my experience you need 200 graze with a 100% shooting down rate to get the 1,000,000 bonus needed for a life piece. So that must make the bonus per graze 5,000? If that's the case, you can get 5 mil per thousand graze, which is very easy to do in most boss chapters (including spell cards). With spell bonuses starting at 3 million in Normal it seems it's almost always worth graze milking instead and killing the boss at the last moment. In fact it's almost always better to risk getting hit/using a bomb (or doing so strategically) because the spell value is often going to be less than what the chapter bonus would be. It also has the effect of increasing point item value.
Each of the first three bosses have cards where you can pull in 4,000 graze (maybe the later ones do too, I haven't spent a lot of time with the last half of the game yet; I imagine that higher spell card values means that you have more to lose by doing risky milking of later stage spells). In short, spell bonuses in 15 are more often than not not the main scoring opportunity during boss fights. Do I have this right?
EDIT: Just watched the current #1 on royalflare. 23k graze on the second boss's 2nd spell, >100 million points. lol

Re: Touhou Kanjyuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (15)
The spell bonus has been pretty irrelevant for top-tier scoring in Touhou since at least Touhou 11, which is when ZUN made graze continue to count while you're using a bomb. Bombing to milk maximum graze for the sake of raising point item value is nothing new at this point. Even before then graze-milking and saving the kill for the last possible moment was often the best way to score, even if it didn't involve bombing for graze.

Ah. I guess that makes sense, it's just more obvious now that the game hands out absurd graze bonuses.

I was cruising through the game and then I got to Clownpiece. I don't think I've ever been shot down so quickly. I didn't even understand that beatdown.
