Phillips CRT with VGA and RGB input

Post by Nocturnal »

Hi

First post, i have been a long time lurker and love shmups. I also love the technical advice i have read on these forums, which has given me more knowledge.

One of those pieces is professional CRT monitors. Until recently i had no idea professional high end crts had such a clearer picture. But you learn something every day.

I currently have a Sony Trinitron kvar21m30 which has composite, s video, and component. I currently use a scart to component adaptor for most of my consoles and get a really nice sharp picture from my saturn, playstation, snes, megadrive. I just use the component for the ps2 for 4:3 non WS games.

Anyways, in pursuit of something better than the kvar21m30 which is 21" i looked at sonys pvms and bvms. In australia however, havent seen many, and got pipped a few times when they went on local classifieds

I have now come across something ive not seen before. A professional CRT VGA monitor. The phillips brilliance 109P4 with 2 inputs - VGA, and one using BNC RGB with H and V for a total of 5 BNC connections.

Being a vga monitor, its running at 31khz, and a quick look on google got me the technical manual which confirms the lowest khz is 31khz. - http://www.manualslib.com/manual/123075 ... e=2#manual

Now this monitor appeals to me for the native VGA input, so i can connect my Dreamcast and a laptop for emulation but also the RGB BNC connectors for the consoles. Say i managed to get this monitor (Its a local so i doubt i would have too much problems) what would i need to do to make consoles work on it?

Any help would be appreciated. If its too much work i can just skip and move on, but the price and dot

Thank you.

Dreamcast should work without a hitch. For 15Khz RGBs, you'd want a scan converter to get to 31KHz.

This is basically just a regular PC monitor, though apparently one with low-persistence phosphors for high refresh rates and a very fine aperture grille for high resolutions (I saw 1920x1440 resolution quoted). Games probably will look a little different than on a real RGB display or monitor, though that might not be bad. The BNC connectors don't add much in the way of convenience, because scan converters like the old XRGB series have D-subminiature 15 (the standard PC VGA connector) outputs, not BNC. You'd just as well stick with the regular VGA input on the monitor then.

Yeah, that's just a PC monitor. I currently have a few similar ones and play PC games at crazy resolutions like 2560x1920. Also capable of very high refresh rates. On my LaCie monitor I can run 1600x1200 @ 100hz. 1024x768 @ 144hz and beyond.

May as well just stick with the trinitron for now and keep on the lookout.
Guess i got a little excited when i saw dual input.

Thanks for the information.

With a Component to RGBHV transcoder it might be a nice screen if you're into 480p stuff.

It's a better monitor than your Trinitron if you're playing anything made in the past 15 years. That Panasonic can display 480p to 1080p and beyond, and since it's a professional monitor it may still have really good picture. 1080p widescreen would be pretty small on that though, so most people would rather play on a large LCD or Plasma.

Just looking at 240p/480i stuff really, i play a lot of snes and saturn. I have a snes mini thats rgb modded, and a fat snes that i component modded.
The 2 inputs were nice, easy enough to leave my dreamcast plugged in full time, and have another console.

For the newer consoles, they are hooked up to my LED. The trinitron is just for everything up to the 32bit/64bit era.

If i can get scanlines, or interlace going, i would be more than interested again.

The dot pitch on it is extremely good i admit.
