Can we convince PewDiePie to try a shmup?

Post by STG4WD »

So this cat PewDiePie has the most subscribed channel on YouTube.

He has ***38 Million*** subscribers. He plays games. And he's funny.

Any reason why we shouldn't try and convince this guy to 1CC a Shmup in a future playthrough?

He just beat Catherine, which has arcade puzzling style elements (and insta-death in places). So it's not like he can't play an arcade game with strict rules.

PewDiePie wouldn't know how to play a shmup. Best case scenario is he would credit feed through it while screaming like a madman. I don't think that would exactly help anyone's opinion of the genre.

No, this would be the very wrong way to 'promote' the genre. And it doesn't need it anymore, anyway.

Imagine millions of kids and teens (the audience of PDP) suddenly learning about badass old games that might be actually more exciting than their latest online crap, only a google away from reading about those expensive 'collector' games and pcb's: welcome to the retrogaming market armageddon part.2
Prices are enough fucked up after years of assault by ignorant kids~newbs with too much cash and opportunists business sharks, personally I don't want more idiots in this realm.

Think I'm unkind with the potential newcomers ? Fuck that, the shmup industry being almost completely dead, more people with no knowledge and low morale will only make things worse.
Sometimes I understand the communities that went full autistic/private, what's the point of inviting more people to the hunt when your essential species is going extinct ?

The genre does need more exposure, but not like that.

Jesus, not like that.

I have developed a kind of perverse love for reading some of the isolationist, protectionist, elitist crap that gets spewed on this forum.

"That guy has the most subscribed channel on YouTube? 38m subscribers?! FUCK HIM! We don't need that kind of exposure! It's gonna drive up prices of the long-dead games we wanna play because nobody wants to make new ones!"

No, like Grooktook and Xyga said maybe he doesn't know all the basic elements in the genre. And if he would do that the genre and the game itself may being a bad reputation, in case like AVGN Silver Surfer video while he ranting about the game, there's too many posts or statement about bad or shitty games and linking to this, even people doesn't play that game and it also affects the genre too.

The best way to expose the genre is like what GameGrumps did with Gradius V and Parodius vid ones.

Most people really hate Pewdiepie though. And I don't just mean on this forum, basically he and his particular brand of "humor" are overwhelmingly disliked by most people over the age of ten, and how unfunny and over-rated he is is pretty much a running joke on the internet. You could say "how come he has so many subscribers then?" for the same reason Twilight and Justin Bieber and the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy made money: young people are dumb.

Pewdiepie playing shmups would probably drive people away from the genre, if anything.

Slowbeef and TotalBiscuit repping Crimzon Clover was really great. Mature and intelligent people with a hefty subscriber base playing and advocating the games is great. Pewdiepie screaming "THE BULLETS ARE RAPING ME AAAAAAAAAAAAA" into a mic while credit feeding...not so much.

This guys main audience is young teenagers and morons. I don't think his exposure would help the genre any.

If Pewdiepie decided to play a shmup, he would most likely select the game with the most bullets (probably Futari Ultra or something), insert a credit, then take his hands off the controller and start flailing around while screaming like so:
Image

Only putting his hands back on the controller to continue or shoot a boss that doesn't timeout.

It wouldn't be a showcase of shmups so much as it would be a new excuse for Pewdiepie to ham it up for the camera.

I would assume that most people who watch Pewdiepie don't watch him to see new interesting games, they watch it to either see him playthrough and react to games they already know about, or to watch him react to LOL SO RANDOM meme games.

Since most people wouldn't know about a game like Mushihimesama Futari, between the absurd shower of bullets and Pewdiepie screaming like he's on a bath salt bender they would just assume (yes I would think that most people who are fans of Pewdiepie would be so uninformed as to make this assumption) that these sort of games are just another type of meme game and are not actually meant to be beaten.

I would say that the Game Grumps would probably be a much better option if you had to pick a mainstream gaming channel focusing on humor rather than discussion.

They've played at least 3 gradius games now (Gradius 3 on SNES, Parodius, and Gradius V), and while the commentary is pretty much unfocused stoner dialogue ("Man that boss is shooting out metal cheerios like in metroid!" "Hey you wonder if people ever get General Mills and General Motors confused, and they accidentally order a bunch of metal cheerios for breakfast?") and most of the time isn't even related to the game at hand, the actual gameplay performance in these gradius videos is fairly competent (which is much more than can be said for most of the other game grumps videos), which apparently has to do with Arin being a big fan of Gradius. He also apparently really likes Raiden Fighters (and slightly unrelated, owns a virtual on machine along with a few other candy cabs), but he hasn't played those on the show.

More exposure wouldn't be a bad thing in and of itself, necessarily, but I'd be hesitant to seek out the sort of attention that comes from audiences who watch an ostensibly video game-related show in which the games on display are of far less consequence than the antics of the guy off to the side.

Rushed in to sign the petition but seem to have misread "shmup" as " shut-up", in op's header.
False alarm. Carry on.

I'm assuming the OP is baiting, but just imagine if a big youtuber covered (or likely credit fed) a touhou game.
The secondary fandom of touhou would get 1000x worse than it already is now.

I was referring more to channels which get more than a million views average on each video. Cr1tikal isn't exactly too popular.
copy-paster wrote: Neatest comment ever.
If I recall correctly I was the one who made that comment, so thanks. I'm flattered. :D

Honestly though, all of the comments in that video which say something to the effect of "this game is just an evil arcade game meant to take your money!" gives me an aneurysm.

They do realize that literally every game that isn't a freeware title was made to take your money, right? RIGHT?

If a shmup were to appear on PewDiePie it would probably consist of him dying repeatedly while shouting garbage can verbiage, which if anything would further promote the "LOL PLAY THIS GAME BECAUSE IT'S SO HARD AND UNFAIR AMIRITE" mentality. People might play the game in question because of him but more because "it's that hard game I laughed at PewDiePie playing" than because of the game's actual quality. Which if you ask me, misses the point of getting people to play shmups (though I suppose the extra sales would be appreciated by the devs of said shmup). It's like handing a bunch of Bibles to people so they can make fun of the more outlandish stories in it, and then expecting those people to become legitimately interested in Christianity.

I'm personally fine with the current number of people who know that shmups exist (though it could always be higher), it's the amount of people who appreciate them as good games rather than gimmicky-hard games that's all too small.

And yes, I really did just draw an analogy between religion and playing shmups. I regret nothing.

PewDiePie playing a shmup would do absolutely nothing for shmups. Isolationist, protectionist, elitist as we are - and that's what makes us special - figuring this out is just common sense.
