Zenohell - 22/05/16 Potential bugfix for Intel iGPUs

Post by Kaiser »

Well, I will start off saying that I want to thank the shmups forums for the last 10 years i've been here, as a lurker then a member and in the end, both as a player and a developer.

I've had many good times in here, both outside the STGTs and during them, i've spent hundreds if not few thousands of hours playing shmups so I could complete in the games I liked. I failed to do many 1ccs, but there were also 1ccs I did successfully, if not those things I experienced, I would never understand the genre to the heart of it. Also I have made many good long-term friends in here who are standing by my side.

In the end, those experiences, have shaped me, have changed me and made me who I am now, I present to you:

Image

Zenohell, the 90s inspired shoot-em'up that is all about blowing up enemies, collecting medals and going way too far with finishing off the bosses.

Made by my team which is:
Image

Made by me and a couple of shmup forums friends and we decided to put it on greenlight, because we've been spending our entire time off work/education to get it done the way we wanted. Now here's a list of features:

- 6 (?) Stages packed with music, bosses of varying sizes and intensity,
- A secret mode locked till you beat the game,
- 3 different player ships offering various playstyles, with more to be unlocked as you progress,
- 20+ music tracks created by Jorgen Sjolander (dj_emphatic on soundcloud/emphatic on these forums, check him out!) to suit the madness,
- 3 difficulty modes, which do affect how the game plays in minor and major ways, one of which has been custom designed by one of our members,
- Music moddability (Yep you can swap out the in-game music for your favorites!),
- Gameplay from times when it was more about reflexes and less about complex scoring.

You can find screenshots, a trailer in both places you can purchase the game!
Steam Version (Doesn't require to steam to run once installed): http://store.steampowered.com/app/402030/
Completely DRM-Free: http://jackdarx.itch.io/zenohell

And here's the list of people that will bring you this title:

- Kaiser - Main gameplay/Graphics designer,
- BPzeBanshee - Secondary gameplay designer/Technical support,
- Emphatic aka Jorgen Sjolander - Composer and the MAN who tests the game on his arcade cabinet,
- Rozyrg - The artistic madman behind the logo, the ZOR arrange mode developer,
- Samurai Fox/Rushing Beat - Secondary Graphics Designer,
- Nasty_Wolverine - Game design consultant and THE TRAILER MAN

Hey, that DOES look very cool! Judging by the people involved I'm going to assume, that the euro shmup problems won't be present in this game. Stupid question: Tate support?

Yup TATE support's in and tested as seen on one of the screenshots showing the game in a cab :) and yeah, if there were euroshmup problems, our testers would yell at us for months about it but they haven't :) (all of our testers are regulars on this forum like Jaimers, ResumeDPosition and a couple of others)

For TATE use, I recommend running Windows in TATE and just start the game in full screen (the game scales perfectly then, tried in 480p).

Another beauty

"Too much bullets for me (never been a fan of danmakus) and the music is TERRIBLE. But the game looks cool so i voted for it. "

I guess graphics promote votes alone

Regarding the dumb comments about wasting screen space, I think it might be a good idea to make the default wallpaper (or at least the one shown in the trailers) look like a 90's arcade cabinet bezel, complete with an instruction card.

This may be wishful thinking, but maybe it could get people to understand that the tiny vertical screen is being used in the context of mimicking an arcade game screen?

I make no promises but once we get this thing ported over to GM:Studio I'll see if it'd be viable to do before release - it's technically doable now but requires a lot of messing around in this game's view handling, which would be made easier having it running in Studio first.

Well thank you guys for all the kind of words and hype, be sure to spread the word if you have friends interesed in shmups ;). We currently have a decent amount of votes for a shmup (330) so greenlighting it should'nt take very long, I might as well say what's been going on.

I've been going through stacks of feedback and implementing tweaks based on the suggestions, our testers are to say passionate at least, i've been doing code clean-up to ensure that porting the game to GM Studio soon will be a smooth effort. Emphatic's going to finish the soundtrack soon (chances are, the soundtrack will be it's own thing post release :) ), unfortunately we have a serious problem in the graphics improvement department as Fox, our secondary artist has took a break until September for personal reasons but we will still try to do something in that field ourselves.

so tl;dr our focus is currently on making the game as perfect in stability/technical department as possible while implementing all the tweaks and stuff (yes RHE the ship banking sprites are coming eventually)

Well, so we were meant to start working on GMS port today because it's August and we were meant to spend August porting the game but over past 1,5 weeks WE ACTUALLY ported the game successfully to GMS and we are weeding out the last oddities, so instead August will go towards going through all the walls of feedback we got from our testers and dealing with all the issues, in short we slowly starting to do the wrap, with final testing possibly commencing at end of August or mid-september max.

Looks nice, the bullet patterns and their speeds look suitably manic, and reminiscent of Battle Garegga. I've voted yes, hopefully it will be available soon.

I can't make promises about whether the game will make it to other platforms, well at least not until a while after release because there are some costs involved that we will be able to only fund after the game's out and selling. Then there's the problem of testing the ports on the actual Linuxes/macs and we don't have testers capable of doing that. So as I said, I can't make promises that this will happen.

We are currently standing at 386 votes and 32% way to top 100, I've put up the game on indiedb, i've been tweeting quite a bit on the developer twitter but I think the main vote wave has already passed. I've been sending mails to various youtubers as well but without a successful result yet, so any help to spread the word will be appreciated.

Yep I sent it to slowbeef back when greenlight launched, I unfortunately have not received a response yet, I'm not making any assumptions though.

What I can say is that the game is progressing after the porting and if time and willpower permit for me and BPzeBanshee, we may go extra miles with enhancing the game in little ways but for now, we have a huge stack of things to currently to do ;).

Oh my god, I woke up with a warm tea cup in my hand and I thought I would spill it everywhere, Zenohell has been greenlit! Thus, the steam release has been secured alongside the itch.io, so we'll be offering the game both DRM free and on Steam on release. We are currently wrapping the game up, doing even more tests, ensuring the end product will be well rounded. Some of our lovely forum members have been going heavy with testing it, so we are squashing bugs we can't spot ourselves easily, ensuring the game will be as bugless as we can make it.

Thank you for the votes and comments guys, stay tuned!
