GRADIUS vs R-TYPE
Two of the longest running series of 2D shmups go on a BATTLE to find out who had the BEST shooters!!
In the GREEN corner we have GRADIUS , famous for their colorfull backgrounds and great end of level bossfights..
And in the RED corner we have R-TYPE , famous for its power up beam and those HUGE battleships..
LET'S FIGHT!!!
I put my money on R-TYPE

personally i have no idea who you're voting for (given the RFinal vs G5 comment). mine goes for Gradius.Sly Cherry Chunks wrote:I'm a fan of both series (I seem to lean towards R-Type) but I think R-Type Final VS Gradius V proved once and for all which is the greater of the two - the answer which is darn obvious, come on.
I have no sig whatsoever.

I vote for Gradius. There are excellent Gradius games on NES, GB, GBA, PC Engine, MSX, PSX, Saturn, PS2, X68000, and Arcade. And don't forgot the excellent Life Force/Salamader spinoffs on PSX, Saturn, PC Engine, MSX, Arcade, and NES. R-Type does have some awesome console only games, but Gradius has more console exclusives and ports that have been remixed for consoles. Like R-Type, Gradius has some excellent arcade ports too. Also, Gradius has some cool portable exclusives on GB, unlike R-Type. I personally think Nemesis alone is a good reason to play shmups on the GB/GBC/GBA. Lets not forgot the Parodius games either!

Hmm..this is a really tough choice.
I guess I would pick Gradius, even though honestly, I prefer R-Type's style of gameplay. I was never a big fan of Gradius' "die once and you're screwed and have to start over" style of gameplay.
But unfortunately R-Type franchise only has 2 or 3 really great games (1, 3, maybe Delta) while Gradius outnumbers it quite a bit with 1,2,Gaiden,5,Lifeforce,Salamander 2, etc.

R-Type is one of my all-time favourites. I haven't played the original Gradius enough to like it, though I'm sure I would. But, because of that I have to give the nod to R-Type - my first shmup love
I just got R-Type Final, haven't played it at all yet. Gradius V absolutely rocks... just not enough to bias my opinion.

It's hard to choose..
I'd say R-Type begins the fighting showing a good footwork, and hit some excellent blows on Gradius, and gets an advantage early on the fight... but it gets tired after the 7th round, and Gradius starts fighting back, showing it can keep on the fighting for a long time, and nails a knockdown in the last round.
In the end, the judges says: it's a draw!

Ok, when I said I "just got R-Type Final" I meant it. I was able to play it for the first time tonight and I like it so far. I've got a feeling I'll really like it. I've only made it into stage 2 so far, and in Gradius V I've only made it to 3-2 or 3-3 (can't remember which it was). It's going to be a tough call... of course, the winner is me. I get to play 'em both

Quantity over quality. Hmmmm....
Why would I need 101 ships when I have the Vic Viper?
