GRADIUS vs R-TYPE

Post by SPACE HARRIER »

Two of the longest running series of 2D shmups go on a BATTLE to find out who had the BEST shooters!!
In the GREEN corner we have GRADIUS , famous for their colorfull backgrounds and great end of level bossfights..
And in the RED corner we have R-TYPE , famous for its power up beam and those HUGE battleships..

LET'S FIGHT!!!

I put my money on R-TYPE

I'm a fan of both series (I seem to lean towards R-Type) but I think R-Type Final VS Gradius V proved once and for all which is the greater of the two - the answer which is darn obvious, come on.
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

How about Thunder Force comes along and blows past them both?

Wouldn't a poll have been better for this?

Gradius.

IMO, R-Type always had better level design than Gradius (although R-Type Final was particularly weak and Gradius V was particularly strong in that department).

I vote for Gradius. There are excellent Gradius games on NES, GB, GBA, PC Engine, MSX, PSX, Saturn, PS2, X68000, and Arcade. And don't forgot the excellent Life Force/Salamader spinoffs on PSX, Saturn, PC Engine, MSX, Arcade, and NES. R-Type does have some awesome console only games, but Gradius has more console exclusives and ports that have been remixed for consoles. Like R-Type, Gradius has some excellent arcade ports too. Also, Gradius has some cool portable exclusives on GB, unlike R-Type. I personally think Nemesis alone is a good reason to play shmups on the GB/GBC/GBA. Lets not forgot the Parodius games either!

Gradius V and Gaiden are better than any of the r-types, but alot of the older ones are simply too frustrating because you get so fucked when you die and lose all your cool stuff.

Hmm..this is a really tough choice.

I guess I would pick Gradius, even though honestly, I prefer R-Type's style of gameplay. I was never a big fan of Gradius' "die once and you're screwed and have to start over" style of gameplay.

But unfortunately R-Type franchise only has 2 or 3 really great games (1, 3, maybe Delta) while Gradius outnumbers it quite a bit with 1,2,Gaiden,5,Lifeforce,Salamander 2, etc.

Gradius, no contest. I can't think of any feature of R-Type that I prefer to Gradius. R-Type Final was pretty cool, but Gradius V blows it out of the water.

Where are all the R-Type fans? I believe this site used to have billion of RT fans around...I must be wrong.

Anyway, my vote goes to Gradius.

R-Type is one of my all-time favourites. I haven't played the original Gradius enough to like it, though I'm sure I would. But, because of that I have to give the nod to R-Type - my first shmup love :)

I just got R-Type Final, haven't played it at all yet. Gradius V absolutely rocks... just not enough to bias my opinion.

As a series, I'd vote for the R-Types over the Gradius games. Taking single games from each, Gradius V is the best, closely followed by the awesome R-Type Delta.

If I had to choose, I'd rather play Gradius Gaiden & Gradius V more than R-Type Delta & R-Type Final. The Gradius series just impressed me more with the latest installments.

Gradius gets my vote!

I like both Gradius and R-Type, but I gotta vote for R-Type on this one.

In R-Type, you still have a chance even if you die and lose all your power-ups.

In Gradius, you're usually screwed (especially on the later levels) if you die and lose all your power-ups.

I like both series, but I definitely lean more towards Gradius. I just feel more comfortable playing a Gradius game.

And this thread should be turned into a giant battle royale poll with Thunderforce and Darius included...

It's hard to choose..

I'd say R-Type begins the fighting showing a good footwork, and hit some excellent blows on Gradius, and gets an advantage early on the fight... but it gets tired after the 7th round, and Gradius starts fighting back, showing it can keep on the fighting for a long time, and nails a knockdown in the last round.

In the end, the judges says: it's a draw!

Ok, when I said I "just got R-Type Final" I meant it. I was able to play it for the first time tonight and I like it so far. I've got a feeling I'll really like it. I've only made it into stage 2 so far, and in Gradius V I've only made it to 3-2 or 3-3 (can't remember which it was). It's going to be a tough call... of course, the winner is me. I get to play 'em both :)

I vote for Gradius. Maybe the amazing quality of the two most recent installments (V and Gaiden) is blinding my vision of the bigger picture, but BrianC's argument is pretty damn convincing.

That's not fair; gradius and Rtype are both different in approach; and I love them both.

I declare it a draw

Yeah, I guess if it's quality over quantity, then R-Type wins. Gradius series had some really good games, but R-Type 1 is arguably the greatest and most influential shmup ever made, and no Gradius game really comes close to touching it.

The most of you like the GRADIUS series,BUT I WON'T GIVE UP!!!
HERE IS MY FINAL BLOW;
On GRADIUS V you ONLY have ONE ship to play with and a handfull weapons to use...COME ONE!!
On R-TYPE FINAL you have 101 ships to choose from...you also can choose your own weapons!! HELL YEAH!!

For replay value:R-TYPE wins this round..

Quantity over quality. Hmmmm....
Why would I need 101 ships when I have the Vic Viper? :P
