Dark Souls 3

Post by CMoon »

Looks like Dark Souls 3 is real, as supported by the screenshots included in the link below.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1057985

http://imgur.com/a/yEcES

There is some question about the source of these images ('The Know'), and I was skeptical looking at the images, but they look legitimate and seem to be an amalgam of dark souls and bloodborne, which is pretty much what we would expect at this point. It also makes sense that From would want to court both Sony and Namco/Bandai simultaneously. It also doesn't make any sense to let the souls franchise go (except for artistic reasons), given the success of its entries.

Let the wild speculation begin!

They're really cranking these out now. Well, I'm glad this is Dark Souls 3 at least. Bloodborne has some design regressions that really hurt the longevity of the game (eg. over-simplified character builds, total lack of weapons, no new enemies in ng+, everything about the multiplayer). Hopefully those won't carry over to Dark Souls.

Yeah, as much as I liked Bloodborne, I enjoyed Dark Souls quite a bit more. I hope they can continue to innovate.

Honestly I worry that they are moving too fast; but on the other hand, when you have a winning formula and all the right talent, funding, etc. you might as well make as much as you can.

Hmm...I heard a few days ago that it was going to be shown at E3, and was going to be directed by Miyazaki.

If Miyazaki does it, I'll check it out.

If it's "B Team", I'll wait and see. They had a troubled production last time around (changing directors and direction of game midway). Maybe their 2nd effort will be more to my liking.

At this point From's "hardcore fanbase" is faithful enough to buy more Souls games, no matter how often new ones come out.

I kinda dig the rough look of the characters right now. That may well change later on. The environments themselves are really ornate though - especially that skybridge in the second shot, looks a bit too well-maintained for a lost kingdom (but maybe it isn't supposed to be). I think that from the big rat on we're looking at just concept art (also, note the Hebrew text on the tombstones in that next shot - I wish somebody would try Aramaic text sometime, but Hebrew is cool too).

In agreement, absolutely floored by the lack of any information in that trailer.

If the quality doesn't suffer, bring 'em on, and if Bloodborne is any indication, I'm not sure there's any reason to worry about that.

Well, considering the game is slated for Q1 2016, I'm sure we'll be seeing much more very soon. This was perfectly fine for a reveal trailer as far as I'm concerned.

Haven't watched the DS3 reveal trailer, but the DS2 reveal trailer had very little information as well, so I'm not surprised.

Still no word of an Armored Core VI. From is getting consumed by Souls like Gamefreak was consumed by Pokemon.

I know, AC was nearly an annual series through the PS1 and PS2 generations, but it wasn't at the total expense of their other games and From's lineup had far more variety then.

I doubt any Armored Core took as much resources to develop as any Souls game, but what do I know?

Damn, you've guys have made me realise that I would have prefered the announcement of a new Armored Core.

But that being said I am somewhat hype. I've been getting more into DS2 with the DLC and with Miyazaki back at the helm I feel like my conservative expectations could be exceeded.

I just read that Miyazaki IS directing this.

Well, that would kind of explain why Bloodborne is short (compared to other DS games).

If he's on it, I'm in.

Kinda belongs in the BB thread, but I actually like how BB is relatively short. It's a streamlined game that is very beatable in under an hour with a high degree of skill. Sure, it doesn't currently have the build variety of souls games (but what will the expansion add?), however when played like an arcade game it really shines. Everyone who hasn't should try the low-level run, or speed running or both.

Personally I suspect BB was using Sony's money to build and test a new engine. I am not sure I'd go so far as calling BB a tech demo, but yeah, its brevity does feel like there were more pressing matters to get to (DS3.)

OK, so some news is starting to trickle out from E3.

First, probably worth reading Frostitude's comments about the conference on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls3/comm ... o_of_dark/

Unfortunately he doesn't talk about the demo gameplay here, but you can find impressions from other people. I was sifting through Lobos Jr's lengthy E3 reflections (streamed in a hotel room with a lurking Vaati), and some of what he says actually has me excited about the game:

-Level design by Miyazaki
-Setting is post-apocalyptic/medieval; I am imagining something like the setting of the Kiln from Dark Souls 1, but with much more variation.
-There is discussion of the resurrection of the lords of cinder, which may be the chosen undeads from previous cycles. Is it your task to kill them?
-Everything you can see you can visit
-Sword Art moves more like trick weapons than power stance from DS2. From what I can figure out, two handing your weapon allows L1 to perform 'sword art' moves. I have so many questions about this, but we'll just have to wait.
-Graphics are like bloodborne. Dark areas like SOTFS, but no crazy graphics like DS2 trailer, suggesting there will be no graphical downgrade.
-Graphics will be locked at 30 fps
-Instant parries and backstabs return from DS1.

Lobos mentions that the game reminds him most strongly of Dark Souls 1, with shades of Demon's Souls and Bloodborne.
Finally, we probably won't actually get to see a playable demo until September. Maybe if we're lucky, someone will leak the footage from the conference.

Eh, I don't think so. I never really saw a problem with it, and enjoyed it in both Demon's & Dark Souls. I realize it can be an issue in PvP, but I don't care about PvP very much so why should I be made to suffer? In general, I really wish they wouldn't make core battle mechanics decisions that affect PvE for the purposes of balancing PvP (one of biggest barriers to me finding any enjoyment in Dark Souls 2) and would rather they just have a slightly different set of core mechanics depending on whether or not you're fighting another player. Go ahead and take out backstabs for PvP, I don't care, but don't ruin my single-player experience!

I thought the Bloodborne compromise was fine, but I don't necessarily prefer it. I'm fine with either.

Continuing to pull nuggets out of the Lobos/Vaati video; most interesting to me is the sequence in which they started working on these projects.

Chronologically, it seems like they started working on DS3 about the same time as BB, which is to say right after or during the Artorias of abyss dlc. If you're following the logic here, it means that work on DS3 began BEFORE DS2. This may explain why DS2 is such a thing unto itself.
iconoclast wrote:It will be dumb if they go back to the way DS1 does backstabs.
I'm with Necronopticous here that from a PVE point of view, instant backstabs and parries really work in DS1. Once you master them, the game becomes very arcade-esque since you can use the invulnerability to create spaces in the action. BB also did this to a much more limited extent with parries. Like Necro, I would be for them making some distinction between pvp and pve in the way backstabs are handled. Or simply have them do piss-poor damage in PVP. I'd even be up for an overall nerf to damage, but allow certain rings/gear to make backstabs a viable build.

What I think we're missing is how backstabs did too much damage, not that they were executed poorly. That's an easy problem to solve, you don't have to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Just wanted to post Vaati's new Dark Souls 3 video. There is NOTHING new here, but it is relatively short and concise, summing up everything from E3. If you haven't been following the rest of this, the following link will get you up to speed:

I keep waiting for a real-time combat dungeon crawl in 3D as arcade-y as Crimson Tears. From what I read of Bloodborne, it was a step in this direction.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off
