Good 3ds shooters?
I'm going to buy a 3ds in the next week or so, and I want to know if there are any good shmups for it. Recommendations?

I don't have a 3DS, but Recca sprang to mind instantly.
Since I'm not following the backwards compatibility stories, here's a question: can playable content from Wii games be downloaded onto 3DS? I'm thinking about Geometry Wars: Galaxies.

to be quite honest, there arent too many traditional shmups on the 3ds.

Still have to get Recca. Is it good on 3DS or is it kinda weird? Seems like the 3DS is a bit stiff for something so BLAZING FAST.

Came here to say Recca. Also I hate to be that guy but learn2play.mehguy wrote:summer carnival 92 recca. its hard as ballz.
Please don't buy Karous or whatever its called its... horrible.
Seeing as the 3ds can play regular DS games you can get:
Ketsui Death label
Space invaders anniversary 2
Nanostray 1&2

I've heard that some of the strobing is omitted, but gameplaywise it seems pretty legit.Special World wrote:Still have to get Recca. Is it good on 3DS or is it kinda weird? Seems like the 3DS is a bit stiff for something so BLAZING FAST.
Also, gotta second Fantasy Zone 2. Good shit (It's the system-16 redux). Fantasy Zone 1 is also a great game (and on the 3DS), but 2 is probably better.
Metal Torrent is decent. There's also a few that may or may not be interesting: Xevious, Twinbee (apparently it's a super easy version, so be warned), I think NES Galaga is on VC as well. the GB version of Quarth (Konami's Tetris / Space Invaders hybrid). NES Gradius and Salamander. Skykid might also be on there, IIRC.... I'm know nothing about that game, but I think I remember seeing it.
Not a 2D shooter, but Space Harrier is available, and I think that that Kid Icarus game has rail shooter parts as well, and there was at least one other rail shooter, but the name escapes me...

Unless you're talking about the d-pad or analog stick, I don't see how a 3ds could be too stiff to emulate a Nes game.Special World wrote:Seems like the 3DS is a bit stiff for something so BLAZING FAST.

Oh yeah, the dpad and buttons suck. They are the main challenge you need to overcome when it comes to 3DS shmups. I wouldn't say Recca is unusually hard because of it though. You don't really actually have to move that much compared to some games, anyway.

Re: Good 3ds shooters?
Thank you, never heard of Recca before.
Hopefully it's fixed with the "NEW" xl which is the one im getting. I had a DS lite for a short while and it you couldn't do anything that required diagnol movement without pressing it with excessive force.LordHypnos wrote:Oh yeah, the dpad and buttons suck. Dpad/Stick on the New XL is great for a handheld. Still prefer a real joystick on the go but for what it is both the Dpad/Stick gets the job done.Cerebrate64 wrote:Thank you, never heard of Recca before.

Re: Good 3ds shooters?
I found the regular 3DSXL's pad to be much better than the DS Lite pad.
Rubber contacts can be a bad thing, though. They certainly didn't help the mushy DS Lite pad.Serraxor wrote: Better still, the 2DS actually has rubber contacts instead of microswitches, so not only does it feel like an older style controller, its D-pad is the best of the lot for shooting games in particular.
Re: Good 3ds shooters?
I recommend Kokuga. Not really a scrolling shmup, but it's the spiritual sequel to the legendary Ikaruga and designed by the same guy. It's more slow paced and more about strategically aiming and planning your shots while dodging fewer but trickier bullets from all directions. It's still hellish on the harder difficulties though!

Oh okay. I didn't make the connection because I think that would apply to all shooters.Special World wrote:that is exactly what I'm talking about GrooktookSquire Grooktook wrote:Unless you're talking about the d-pad or analog stick, I don't see how a 3ds could be too stiff to emulate a Nes game.Special World wrote:Seems like the 3DS is a bit stiff for something so BLAZING FAST.
I agree, they're pretty mediocre. Than again the Fat Xbox 360 controller is pretty similar, and I can generally tolerate it when I need to use it.

Kokuga seconded.
Slow, methodical, bite-sized game. Great music, great atmosphere.

Re: Good 3ds shooters?
I picked up Nanostray recently and I'd agree with the suggestion that it's a good 3DS shooter. It's very enjoyable.
Re: Good 3ds shooters?
Chain Blaster! it's certainly not hard or anything but it's a fun enough portable romp.

I don't recommend Kokuga.kid aphex wrote:Kokuga seconded.

Slow, methodical, boring and frustrating with a useless and fiddly special weapon system. Your tank is also several maneuvers short of being acceptable and moves like it blew its tracks during the stage introduction.
It feels so unfinished I don't know what G.rev were thinking. Future mod would be a godsend.

I definitely second 3D Fantasy Zone II W. Not only is the main game great, but Link Loop Land is also good stuff. The 3D port of Fantasy Zone 1 is great too, though it wasn't redone from the ground up for 3DS like the former.
Re: Good 3ds shooters?
I bought a Japanese 3DS XL just to play Steel Empire.
So glad I did. Brilliant game, one of my all-time favourites now. Prefer it to the MD version.

I didn't really get into Kokuga either. It seems like it would be more enjoyable in multiplayer. But it has no online component. I'm kind of hesitant to buy Recca because I'm not sure if the small screen would make bullet visibility a pain to deal with.
Re: Good 3ds shooters?
I very much enjoy Kokuga, and have sunk over 30 hours into it so far. You shouldn't approach it like a regular shmup, though. Instead, the game rewards very deliberate strategic action. If you want to claim a 1CC, pick a route consisting of one to three preparatory levels, leading to one of the three final bosses.
