Axiom Verge in 16:9 240p on PVM

Post by BazookaBen »

Since the game is 270x480, I figured I could play it in 240p with about 5% overscan on either side. I just hooked it up via a VGA to BNC cable with a T-connector to combine H and V sync. Then I set a 424x240 resolution with CRU, then used quickres to set my desktop to that resolution. Launch the game windowed on another monitor, then drag it onto the PVM. I have my PVM set to a 16:9 aspect ratio (programmed to the underscan preset in service menu).

Tried to center it as much as possible, but I can't drag it above the top of the screen, so I have like 10% overscan on bottom, a couple pixels on top and 5% on either side.

Here are the results!

Interesting idea! Though personally I think Axiom Verge looks awesome on an HD LCD TV. The 16:9 look of it on my 55-inch display is simply beautiful.

BTW, there's a boss I just did where it expands the resolution all the way to 1920x1080, so I don't know how your display will handle that.

It does look nice in "270p" though there are things which happen later in the game that make me think it might be best not to do this.
I do think that the art is much nicer to look at with some scanlines though.

Yeah, I'm probably not going to end up playing this way, since parts of the wall and floor are overscanned, and they might have a be destructible or something and I won't see it. What is that 270p image from? I was thinking maybe an L5 series PVM could do it, not sure though.

And if there is a true 1080p part to it I should probably play in that mode. Neat experiment though.

Sorry for giving you false hope there, it's a screenshot of the game running with the CRT Royale shader applied.
I tried it out to see if I thought the art looked any better like that, than big chunky pixels on an LCD.

The programmer of the game uses scanlines for secret areas, and even applies a static noise interference. So technically the artist doesn't want you using scanlines until the game calls for it itself.

So for those of you saying there are 1080p scenes and enemies, are you 100% sure about that? Because I asked Tom Happ and he said this:
Tom Happ wrote:It's all 480 x 270, save for the CRT/scanline effects, which are 960 x 540. The graphics settings let you do 1x,2x,3x,4x, or 5x windowed. Fullscreen just stretches to whatever your desktop resolution is and letterboxes if the aspect ratio isn't 16:9.

So I've been running it at 960x720 @ 60hz on my PC CRT to get pixel perfect 540p in my 16:9 are. But if there are 1080p sections I might want to double that.

I've been playing on my PC monitor, but out of curiosity I dropped it to the 270p windowed mode to see what the levels with added CRT effects looked like:

Not so good.

Edit: Went back and checked the INDI stage 'head travel' effect again. It looks as though it's only going to 960 x 540 after all.

At any rate, one of the main reasons to not use forced scanlines is this will make it more difficult to look for secret areas. The game fades in scanlines as you get close to a secret area, and this is how you'll know where to home in on the passage to it.

I just completed the game this morning and got the 100% trophy. I'm going to work on getting the platinum next.

BTW the soundtrack is awesome. It's amazing that one guy did both the game and the soundtrack. The dude has got talent!
