just learn to chain instead of looking for games where dropping the chain makes you lose slightly less points
I thought SDOJ was more lenient though?
but chaining takes effort (joke)

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
sdoj is more about getting hyper recharges than chaining and if you just full chain everything your score will still probably suck
it doesn't play like ddp at all in terms of scoring
also getting hit with autobomb breaks the chain anyways, it's just that it's pretty hard to break the chain by not having anything to shoot
there is no way to bullshit around the scoring systems in cave games, you either take the time to learn it properly or your scores won't increase one bit

First make sure it's actually saving the state correctly, go into the folder where the states are being saved and see that the state is there and that its filename is the key you presed when saving the state.pokemon123 wrote:Anyway so basically on MAME I can save a state just fine by pressing SHIFT+F7+[key]. Assuming that's correct, when you load the state are you pressing F7 and [key] at the same time, or F7 then [key], one after the other? It should be the latter, but I'm not sure if doing the former would cause issues.
Are there any errors popping up when you try to load the state? Could MAME not find or read the file, or was there something wrong with the state itself or something?
You could try playing DonPachi, screwing up one chain usually doesn't hurt as much in it compared to the other games in the series since the chains are shorter and there's several per stage as opposed to a single stage-long chain. Or, you know, play a different game like Ketsui.

still nothing

@banamatic, ah I see never played SDOJ so sorry. I also plan to start trying to chain seriously but that's only if I can get these states to load >_<

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Have you tried using other versions of MAME?
So the state itself is saving properly? Because if it weren't I would suspect it's an error with the folder's write permissions. Maybe you could try loading the state in a different version of MAME or upload it somewhere and see if one of us can load it?

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
yep tried another version, same thing
well sort of good news though. I got the state to load after randomly pressing the shift, the F7, and the D key (key I saved my state to) a bunch of times. Problem is whenever I press shift when playing the game it asks me where to save my state. I also have no idea exactly how I got the state to load so that I can somehow do it consistently.
screw it, not happy with mame and probably won't be attempting any runs on harder games or scoring but meh.

MAME asks to save a state whenever you press Shift, even without F7? That sounds like screwed up keybindings (or a screwed up keyboard) to me. If you go to configure your general inputs, does it look something like this?

yep it did look like that but didn't realize that you could change the key to configure what state you load in that menu,
changed it to another key and I can now sucessfully load states without any weird problems.
thanks shepardus.

I was just playing a credit of Garegga, and at the part in stage 5 with the big transport ship I died but no powerups were released for me to collect, so I ended up losing a shot power level and all my options. Is this a known glitch, and if so what causes it?

Add Triggerheart Exelica to my earlier list of games that have no enemy collision damage. Vasara-style collision, specifically (bounce-away from aerial enemies)

I've searched and failed.
Can anyone link a video in English or tell me what happens at the end of Under Defeat?
My Japanese is nonexistent
Thanks!

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Umm... I've seen the ending for Under Defeat HD, I assume you don't have that version?
This is for a 1-ALL, or credit feeding to the end of loop 2. I don't know what happens if you legit 2-ALL the game

Thank you Blinge.
Yeah, I only have the Dreamcast version.
Before I finished the game I had a hypothesis about the end based on the photographs that appear in between the stages. They start out in color and then yellow. So I thought -

That the game was actually a story being told by the pilots as old women

It is entirely possible that after the war they defected to the Union with the technology. After WW II a lot of Nazi tech just happened to fall into the hands of the United States. Specifically rockets. I like this ending:D

At the end of the second loop of DonPachi right before you go up against the Bee boss, the voice says "I don't believe it, they have a gooeybitch*!" I'm sure I have the word wrong, what are they really saying? What does it mean?

"I don't believe it, they have a doomsday device/machine*!"
Can't remember if it's device or machine or weapon or whatever, but it's doomsday.

Don't worry, I was confused about that line for a while too. It says "I don't believe it! They've got a doomsday machine!"
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Which version of G-Darius is considered the standard, G-Darius or G-Darius Ver. 2? I would assume it's the former but MAME seems to have the first listed as a clone of the second.
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
I'm convinced I'll never be able to get into a vertical STG...all the games I seem to be able to get into and able to clear are horizontals. Can someone recommend an easy to get into vertical shmup for me? I've tried dragon spirit and the bombing element seemed like too much to adjust to for me (paired with the vertical orientation). I'd really prefer a game without a chaining element to learn the ropes. Thanks in advance!

Cho Ren Sha 68k, Blue Wish Resurrection, and Mushihimesama Futari Black Label (Original Mode) are all relatively easy to clear. Touhou on easy difficulty as well.

I've played Dragon Blaze and like that game. Besides that, what are the best games by Psikyo?
