Undeadline and Twinkle Tale are both really good on megadrive (pricey though). I like ShockTroopers a lot too.

Never played those Pocky and Rocky aka Guardian Angel games (or w/e they were translated to?)

Pretty much has been said already.

Elemental Master and Outzone masters the genre imho.
Shock Troopers is also a top game, but for some reason Ninja Commando feels more like Guwange than ST.

Nobody talked about TAD Heated Barrel ahah!
Not that it's that great, but it's definitely in the same genre.

EDIT:
Oh and I definetly second Elemental Master as one of the best games of that kind. It is more like Guwange, in the sense of a "normal shmup", so autoscrolling.

Oh, and then there is also Undead Line, which looks similar to Elemental Master. But I haven't played the game yet, so I don't know how good it is.

Everybody mentions Knightmare but seem to forget about Hinotori, which was released only a year later by the same publisher.

I guess being on the MSX2 made it less popular.
It is powerup of laser.

Wow, Nitro Ball looks insane! Thanks for bringing this up, Odius!

And yeah, I too love Guwange and always wished for a sequel...maybe a little more towards strange cyberpunk meets feudal Japan, like the Afro Samurai anime:-)

Could you tell me more about contents?

What exactly artwork from Guwange/related to Guwange does it contain? How much of that overlaps "Cave Shooting History" artbook?

When total carnage bombed on release I feel that pretty much killed the western arcade top down run and gun for a while... That and everyone began chasing street fighter money until the world became about polygons.

... And though it's kind of critically acclaimed now, I don't think guwange did very well commercially... Presume never did any favors for anything similarly themed.

I just wish it got a physical release on 360, instead of the XBL port.

It's so fucking good, omg.

That would be interesting, thanks. And yeah - be careful with it - as you are proud owner, you are responsible for keeping it in a good shape :)

Damn that looks nice, I can see why you're concerned about keeping that in top condition.

I really like those too, and there are a few more pages just with concept art.

^ This is from Akira manga, right? Correct if wrong. Anyway, just saw it in random japanese blog as possible inspiration source to Guwange-sama.

Nothing says cringey man baby like the need to put out random unprovoked insults like that...

Apart from being a video game, Guwange is just stylish beyond belief. Possibly the prettiest of all Cave games, even though that is saying a lot.

I think the game could really do with a higher-resolution remake, it doesn't do that concept art justice. Great visual themes but a lot of the detail gets lost in the 240x320 resolution, and it doesn't look quite as sharp and crisp as CAVE's more Toaplan-style spritework such as Dodonpachi.

Actually "computer game themed" doesnt really means a thing here; because games, like cinema, are composite media, where sub-objects like music, graphics etc. might be viewed completely standalone, outside of host.

So it doesnt matter that drawing of Oni is taken from some digital game if it's good enough separately.

Are you an adult with video game tattoos? and what is the correlation between guwange being stylish and some identity chief getting it tattooed on his ball sack or whatever? I'm one of those weird guys that just you know plays the game instead.
