I've done a full run of Ikaruga steam edition - 19mil, with detailed annotations.

While I was inspired by Icarus' Special Demonstration series, my replay and notes are aimed towards beginner or intermediate players.

That was fun to watch, what software do you use to make annotations in the video? Was thinking of doing something similar myself!

That's a standard YouTube feature that you can add to any video. There's an "annotations" option that should show up in the video settings once you've uploaded it.

I've always liked annotations on replays, though they're obviously a lot of work. They can be useful to point out little tips to less-experienced players, or to demonstrate the nuances of a game to people who might be completely unfamiliar with them.

Maybe I should start dabbling with them here and there; I've always worried about them being irrelevant or annoying to some viewers, but I suppose that's why there's an "annotations off" button in the player.

Very cool, thanks for the info! I'll have to check that out when I get home (and using a proper PC), as it's certainly a feature I'd like to add to my vids!

What's annoying is they got rid of pause annotations. Sometimes you really need to pause at a crucial moment to explain some detail in extreme depth.

At least the viewer can still pause the video manually, so it's not that much of a loss to me. I'm more annoyed by the fact that annotations don't show up on the mobile app or when playing the video via Chromecast. Kind of a strange omission if you ask me, given Google's increasing focus on mobile in recent years, and given how critical annotations are in many videos, not only for explanations but also for providing links.

Been loving this since you showed it off. Great play too, of course.

By the way, what are the requirements for unlocking rank 100+ mode? Max selectable rank seems to go up with every play session for me, but I haven't hit 100 yet.

Pretty much that. Select 100 as starting rank.

Okay, so it's just play again and again till 100 starting becomes available? Gotcha.

Just finished annotating the Batrider clear I got yesterday (holy hell YouTube annotations take forever to set up), and it's now available on YouTube:

Haven't seen many decent runs of this game since watching DEL playing this in London. Good run.

This is a nice demonstration! I passed up Batrider after a couple experimental credits, but this makes it look more approachable.

(also, mecha ritz's art is fantastic! wow!)

I should mention that my decision to annotate my clear was partially inspired by your annotated Garegga clear from a couple months ago! Glad you liked the video!

Imalice 0.2 trial - 9.03 million

Very fun for just a first stage, a bit easy for survival though. If the dev keeps it up this could be amazing. Scoring system is very heavy on time bonuses, much like Eschatos.

Still some room to improve, maybe 10mil is possible.. it already gets very difficult above 8 mil. The way you have to mash the charge shot is painful for prolonged play sessions (on a stick at least).

Dunno if a video of this has surfaced before, but here's ProMeTheus's 547m Dodonpachi run.

Great Fairy Wars top player route comparison video This is the current WR run compared to the former WR holders run! Chum wrote up annotations for the video, so don't feel scared if you're unfamiliar with the game; most of the basic concepts behind scoreplay are covered!

Nice video, I also liked the similar video you did for UFO (and the couple of other videos you did, though I haven't watched them yet). Always fun to compare two close-scoring runs.

Thanks, yeah I also really enjoy this kind of stuff, which is why I spend the time making them. It's pretty neat seeing how different players have routing differences or frame synchronized timings here and there. But I suppose most people wanting to study replays for learning purposes would just settle on using something like youtube doubler since it requires no effort (as long as the replays are uploaded).

I wish more high-level touhou replays WERE uploaded to youtube. (leaderboard replays as well)

Video is a much more convenient reference than in-game replays, and it's nice to be able to watch these things whenever. Whoever ran the STGReplays youtube channel was my hero until he stopped uploading. :{
