Any Sony PVM 2130QM owners out there? Or people knowing it?

Post by JazzB1987 »

Hey guys

A youtuber told me that this is the best forum when it comes to PVMs and retro gaming so I decided to visit you guys :)

I have the chance to get a Sony PVM 2130QM for around 50€ (without the "remote bar/board?" if you know what I mean) So I was trying to find out how to connect my old consoles to the monitor before I decide to purchase it. (basically SNES, MegaDrive, N64, PS1 I am from europe so all of it are PAL consoles.)
But I get contradicting information on whether or not the monitors SCART input accepts RGB.

Some people say it does accept standard console scart rgb others say it does not. Some say it will ONLY display composite and pretty much ignore the RGB. Some say it wont show anything because it gets sync problems.
Some say a 2130 does accept RGB via scart but a 2130QM does not (is there a NON QM model of the 2130? And whats the difference?)
Some say I have to get a normal Scart to BNC cable because scart will have sync problems. Others say even a Scart to BNC cable will not work because I need clean-sync and the BNC cable just has composite sync so I either have to buy a sync strike or get a pretty expensive Scart to BNC clean sync cable.

I am so confused right now.

I would really appreciate your help

Thank you very much and have a nice weekend :)

(oh yeah is there some kind of list that lists the PVMs/BVMs by year and or quality? There is so many model numbers I have no idea which one is newer/better than another one) all I know is that the 2130qm seems to be from before 1995 (is that a problem? Is a 2000+ model so much better?)

There is this, it's not exactly exhaustive though.

The main advantage of 50-series (mid-'90s) and later monitors is that they have digital controls/OSDs. On older monitors it's just more tedious to do even simple adjustments.

almost everyone in that thread is talking about voltage converters for pvms.

Arent PVMS multivolt and multistandard (PAL, NTSC) ? They use an iec power connector. they also say 120-240v on them. if you wanted to use one from europe in the us couldnt you just get a US IEC power cord?

Hi JazzB,

I've got a 2130 as well, costed me 50€ too w/loudspeakes.

To the point:

It detects PAL/NTSC, yes.

You can give it RGB through SCART, yes: for example it works ok with a Super Famicom.
You can give it Composite through SCART, yes: it works with my Famicom.

But (here comes the but) I tried to plug a ArcadeForge MAK Strike supergun and it was a no-no, happened something like this to me: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=45707

My advice: just plug your console with the RGB cable, you'll notice if it's composite video or RGB. And enjoy the monitor, it's a tough one.

Edit: this is composite (big image) on my unit:

Thanks for the replies so far. Xan i already know the list you have posted but that does not solve my problem And is also part of the reason i am confused. It lists several QM models and also a 2030 but without QM. Is my model closer to the QMs or the 2030 in terms of features?

so I can use a regular RGB scart cable and plug it into that specific QM model (2130qm) and enjoy beautiful RGB quality without the need for BNC cables or sync strippers or anything like that? Just like with a normal TV that has a scart input? And its also not limited to specific consoles but all that had regular RGB scart cables? Ps1, Ps2, Snes, Cube etc?
The picture is also not just s-video?

Thats awesome news!

Thanks!

Btw. You didnt joke your picture really is huge. But why do you use composite with your genesis/megadrive?

From looking at the specs in the manuals the 2030/2530 have a higher TVL spec compared to the 2130QM/2730QM (560 vs. 420 iirc) so going by that I would say the former are more higher end models.

Hi, I plug my Super Famicom, Megadrive (JP) and Gamecube (PAL) with SCART cables and no problems at all. Also, I plug via composite my PCE (JP).

Those female-SCART-to-BNC cables are needed only with monitors with BNC terminals for RGB, but 2130QM has SCART RGB, its BNC inputs are only for composite or audio. I use some of these to plug the PCE:

For the Superfamicom or PAL GC just this is needed:

Female RGB BNC cables are needed for this connections, wich 2130QM doesn't have:

The pic I uploaded is composite 'cause I had only that cable available at the time of the picture, it's not a recent one.

As Xan points out, the 2130QM has 420 lines, you may like to download its operating manual.

Thanks for the help guys!

I ended up getting 2x PVM 2130QM for a total of 55€ :D one even came with a Scart to BNC cable (nice little extra in case I need that sometime in the future)

here a pic

Just picked them up 3 hours ago and will wait another 10h or so before I use them so they can acclimate themselves. (temps outside like 7°C and ~22°C in my house) Hopefully waiting 12h is enough because I cant wait to finally use them!

Is the 420 line resoution some kind of big disadvantage when using consoles? I mean wont I be missing like 12% of the image or at least see everything but in 12% lower resolution compared to a 480 screen? (Sry I am obviously fairly new to this and never had a TV with less than 576 lines of resolution)

Thanks again!

Read up on TVL here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_lines

I think what it boils down to is just that the aperture grille might be more visible than with a higher end model.

So are the 2130QM 'cube' monitors just a glorified KV-21LT1U (the silver Trinitron TVs) then, picture wise just with geometry controls?

Congrats on the pick up JazzB1987!

I had the PVM-2030, and have a consumer KV-25XBR, which is basically the same as a PVM-2530. They've got a really nice picture for videogames!

Don't get too hung up on the TVL numbers. picture is still gorgeous even if it's not 800 TVL or something. yours' 420 should still be pretty sharp over a 20 inch screen. and should be enough to reslove all pixels in retro games. not blurry in the least. the KV-25XBR has 500 TVL over a 25 inch screen, and that's certainly sharp enough
