Good stuff. Some narration would go a long way for this, though. And maybe duck out the music during the gameplay segments, so we can hear the game-audio.
And I love how the first two games in the video were cancelled in their entirety, and the rest were just minor revisions of games that were commercially released. Oni Death in particular sounds awesome, but something tells me that might just have been the working title for Guwange.

do you consider to cover other genres outside of stgs that cave worked on? I remember an unreleased top-down action/puzzle game that cave was collaborating on with another company, I forgot all the details, though.

Re: The History of Cave Arcade Games That Were Never Sold
I've tried everybody's ideas already, and some are getting integrated into the next version and some aren't. Stuff like 2 column text, narration and real game sound isn't happening. Two columns looks terrible because there is no way in Vegas Pro to L&R justify. My narration sounds terrible and if I got someone else to do it it not only would screw up my vibe and flow but it would add extra steps of work every time I made an edit and even as-is, this video is going to end up taking me around the equivalent of a month of full time work to make. That's how much time this level of production takes.
The real game audio on these videos sounds absolutely abhorrent. I'm doing you a huge favor on the audio track. So unless it is playing music that you can't reference in a released version (like maybe the DFK cock laser video, which I'm still waiting on), that won't happen.
To be brutally honest when I was asking for help it was just with the research and raw data side. I'm happy with my production already and whatever I make, it's not going to be "perfect" to every single person who watches it. That isn't possible.
I could add other genre games if I had at least info/pics about them. I can't add something with less than that. For example I know there was a loke test for their 90s games, but I can't add entries about them with just that.
IIRC before Guwange the arcade guys had just gotten denied on their previous project idea and had a stack of game mechanics ideas to explore, but I don't think they would put working titles as full canceled prototypes like that. Mushihimesama started out as a grungy ship game and there was no canceled project.

Ah, shucks. How about not using the whole screen for the text blocks, or different colour for each odd row, so that it's easier for the eyes to jump from the end of line 1 to line 2 etc?

I'm messing with options to make it easier to read like not going all the way to the ends of the screens and making each line in a paragraph get slightly shorter than the previous.

Thanks I'll add it to the next version. Apparently there was another one called Poco Secret Flower. No info or pics available but it was also for the same system so I'll add a "Kaneko Super Nova System" section with both games.
Re: The History of Cave Arcade Games That Were Never Sold
I have a DVD of those 2 runs which seems to have been authored directly from one of the "original" VHS.rtw wrote:As promised, Dodonpachi Campaign version, 2 runs by SOF-WTN
I can try to do an mp4 and upload it somewhere if there's some interest.
Uploading the whole DVD would be difficult with my crappy internet provider.

I'm interested in getting a couple of minutes here and there of interesting looking sections (some from both loops) to use in the next version if you can do that. Try not to compress it much and don't lower the resolution. Thanks if you can do that.
Re: The History of Cave Arcade Games That Were Never Sold
In the end I rolled up my sleeves and uploaded the whole DVD to Mega.
Only took about 20 hours

Re: The History of Cave Arcade Games That Were Never Sold
Is there any footage of the Pink Sweets location test? I know it was held at a pretty large event, and there was a lot of info and images of it on an old cave website. Sadly you need archive.org to access it now.
And while they're not exactly shmups nor games that weren't sold, how about giving a brief mention to the two(?) medal games cave produced that run on cv1000. There's not a whole lot of info one them I don't think either.

Re: The History of Cave Arcade Games That Were Never Sold
I have some footage of Pink Sweets location test going in the next version. The quality isn't great. The general rule is the older the game/test, the shittier people's recording devices and the more online video sites would recompress (not that many years ago YouTube was synonymous with shit quality, and now their HD offerings aren't bad at all).
Before Ibara there were no loke tests period that I've found. That coupled with that it has historically been frowned upon to use cameras in the events and I think we'll end up pretty lucky overall. The next version is a full-length film.
I'm not interested in changing or expanding the subject matter on this video. I think it's a logical split as I have it, especially considering my other videos on my channel. I wouldn't mind doing other Cave history videos but I don't see it happening because it's too much work/time to not be paid for, and to get what would be needed for other subjects might require crazy shit.

Compelling watch.
Can you imagine a documentary for Toaplan, Taito, Capcom, Konami, Psikyo.

Actually, there were plans to bring both Donpachi & Dodonpachi to the USA but yep, SCEA didn't approve of them -- so they weren't released period.Pretas wrote:Not arcade, but wasn't there an aborted Working Designs localization of the PS1 port of DDP that was shot down by SCEA's anti-2D policies at the time?
I do recall that back in September of 1997, that was when the 1st print edition of DDP was released/sold in Japan courtesy of SPS for the PSX. I called the San Francisco based Japan Video Games store in October of 1997 inquiring if they still had any copies of PSX DDP left for sale. They said that they were all sold out but if I could wait a few more weeks, the upcoming JPN PSX shmup of Irem's R-Type Delta would be available to purchase for $69.99 USD. Placed an pre-order for a single copy & sure enough, it was mailed promptly upon getting 'em in direct from Japan. Still have it to this very day.

Propeller Wars entry was interesting. Progear is one of my favourite Cave shmups and it would awesome if a vertical shooter sequel/prequel/spin-off/whatever like this was released.
Re: The History of Cave Arcade Games That Were Never Sold
Can't help thinking that's Ketsui, it has propellers (rotors), lock-on shot, bullets that change trajectory..Vetus wrote:Propeller Wars entry was interesting. Re: The History of Cave Arcade Games That Were Never Sold
the thing is that "special" comes from the "special ver" line in the rom... which black labels also use. it's wrong, but at the same time it's righttrap15 wrote:- Guwange Blue doesn't have "label" anywhere. It's Guwange Campaign, Guwange Special or Guwange Blue. Additionally, you didn't mention that it has grazing.
- I doubt CAVE called Mushi Matsuri "Blue Label". Please try to call them what CAVE calls them. The whole "label" obsession makes me frustrated.
aoiddr wrote:That Propeller Wars stuff... wow, I definitely didn't expect to see a vertical Progear, nor had I ever heard about anything of the sort before today.

how many years is it going to take for people to realize something as basic as espgaluda clearly being vertical progearciox wrote:Can't help thinking that's Ketsui, it has propellers (rotors), lock-on shot, bullets that change trajectory..
when does theme start to matter when it was pointed out in this thread that mushihimesama was originally as hardcore as ketsui

I remember it was quite heavy for my computer to watch in 720p, if anyone could unearth that youtube link or a playable file for me I would be most grateful !
