I can't recommend Caustic 3 enough. Especially if you are learning and want the same software on your desktop and mobile.

While there are more developed music programs available the developer has made significant improvements to each version. The PC version is provided entirely free and the mobile full release (allowing you to save and export songs, otherwise free) is very reasonably priced. About £6/$10.

I sound like an advert

I never heard of this before :o - looks great - (tbh I kindof haven't been keeping up with audio stuff that much the last few years because of too much anime and well, 'real life' stuff :p).

@emphatic: any advice on layering two 303 patterns. like should one be low-end, one high-end, or one goes through processing other doesnt. and any advice how to make the patterns themselves?

In ReBirth, a tip for nice patterns is:

Enter Step mode (each time you click a note, the sequencer moves 1/16th)

Click all notes you like until you're back at the first step (1/16)

Edit/Copy stores this in memory

Click CTRL+R to randomize accents and slides (adds pauses too IIRC)

Copy/Paste any pattern you like into a new sequencer slot to save it

CTRL+R is the most useful shortcut as you want to use nice scales for your notes that doesn't clash.

Also, experiment with shortening the sequencer patterns to 12, 9, 6 or 3 notes long. It will give you hypnotic results, especially if you copy the pattern to a new slot and add slide, accent or both to one or two notes. Or move some notes up/down using octave function,

To combine patterns, keeping them one or two octaves apart sounds very powerful, but can also come off cheesy. Experiment!

Try this: create a pattern with notes 2, 4, 6 etc muted on one 303, copy it onto the second 303 and use the Move pattern right option. Turn the Tune knob on the top 303 all the way to the left (down) and the other 303's Tune knob all the way right (up).
