A better question would be "is Trizeal the last shmup the Naomi will see?".
I hope so. That'll have a billion DC fans cursing my name, but it's time to move on - the Type-X for better or worse is looking like the new standard, and since Gigawing Generations is hitting the PS2, it would be /reasonably/ safe to say other Type-X shooters should get a PS2 port.
Hopefully.

That's simple: NO!

for instance and at least 1 other 2d shmup type game (Senko...a VS fighter shmup) that I know of now! (http://data.uploda.net/anonymous/etc1/d ... d14076.mpg)

***edit*** Naomi still has some life in it...Type-X can not convince me of it's advantage for now at least...

Well, while it's technically not a true shooter we have GRev's excellent looking Senko No Ronde which I'm looking forward to far more than Trizeal. Sure, it's more of an arena/Cannon Spike'esque shmup/fighter hybrid but it's shooty enough and mimics the appearance of a vertical shooter in special attack mode.

Kron, a person who is extremely reliable said in click's forum that it's "definite."Blue Lander wrote:I'm really looking forward to Senko no Ronde, too. Is the Dreamcast port a sure thing? Is there any release date?
Sounds like we have reason to be excited that it may very well happen at the least.
Click: Kron: So, that DC port... definite or just super-highly possible?
Kron: Its a definate click (you have my word).
I've passed the release information in the past about the Border Down, Psy2 and Shiki 2 and Chaos Field DC releases so I hope that is in someway an indicator.
Click: Kron - I'll take your word. Would it be sneaky to hint at it on the front page?

I'm actually with you on this bloodflowers. It's time for a new system and i'm starting to think it's time for the DC to go to sleep. After Senko No Ronde and perhaps Radirgy what the hell else is there? DC sure as hell can't handle Type X.bloodflowers wrote:A better question would be "is Trizeal the last shmup the Naomi will see?".

Senko No Ronde looks like a definite for a DC port. Both of G-Rev's (pronounced 'gref') prior NAOMI releases (Border Down, Idol Star Seeker) got DC ports (with extras).
However, they might end up porting Senk No Ronde to other platforms as well. Hell, if they release a PS2 version with on-line support, I'll snag that as well as the DC rev.
As for NAOMI finally bowing out.. well, isn't NAOMI easy to develope for (not to mention cheap)? Plus, the current Type-X releases aren't even using a fraction of the hardware's power (are you honestly going to tell me that GigaWing Generations couldn't be ported to the DC?).
Chances are that smaller companies (like G-Rev) will continue to support the NAOMI platform for at least another year, if not two.

Apparently, it plays sorta like Virtua Fighter: 3-buttons (shield/boost, primary attack, secondary attack) plus lots of tap-tap motions to perform the special moves.LoneSage wrote:Senkou no Ronde's always seemed like "Virtua On in space" to me...I have no idea how it's going to play exactly, but for some reason I'm not too excited about it.

From the video I've watched, it's a very fast and kinetic game.

After Psyvariar 2, my enthusiasm for new DC shmups has cooled a bit. My Dreamcast doesn't work very well, it's a crap shoot if a game will even load, so it's a hassle to play imports on it. I'm not sure what to think of Trizeal, it looks moderately interesting but I'm not sure I want to drop 60 bucks on it, I might just wait until it becomes cheap, or someone sells a copy in the trading forum. Ditto on Chaos Field, I'll wait for more impressions before I decide if I wnat to buy the Extend Edition. The Dreamcast is great, but lately it's games aren't much to get worked up for.
Having said that, I'm very excited for Senko no Ronde, it looks great. Unless a GC port is announced, I'll definitely buy the DC port.
Also, Radiurgi looks like the best of the latest new shmups, I'll keep my eye out for the DC port.

Let's not forget the majestic Ikaruga runs on Naomi hardware. Any new shmup released today with that level of detail would still be classed as "cutting edge", wouldn't it?
So there's no reason to retire Naomi for many years to come. Shmups don't really need over-the-top hardware these days. FPS games and the like are the driving forces for new hardware. And weren't there reports of Type X hardware already sometimes crashing to "blue screen of deaths"?
Naomi is nice, reliable, developer-friendly and cheap too. A good platform for shmupping.

Wow, too bad it's a borderliner, else that'd be a good addition to the Hot Shmup Chicks thread over in OTKiken wrote:http://www.grev.co.jp/ronde/images/inst2.jpg

It's an attempt to make a 2-player battle game that playes like a shmup. It's not a shmup in the traditional sense, but it's a game targeted squarely at shooter fans.LoneSage wrote:Senkou no Ronde's always seemed like "Virtua On in space" to me...I have no idea how it's going to play exactly, but for some reason I'm not too excited about it.
It's set up like a fighter, sort of, with 2 players opposing each other, each with a life bar, and a super meter. You have two primary attack buttons, one which shoots your normal shot, and one which shoots a homing shot, as well as a sheild for blocking. You can do joystick motions to do special moves, which resemble shmup firing patterns. Once you build up your super meter, you can transform into a Boss and unleash devastating screen filling firing patterns on your opponent. If you can dodge your opponents attecks well enough to get in close you can also do physical attacks.
I guess you could think of it as if Virtual On mated with Zero Gunner. I think it's a great idea. Something a little different, but still posessing that satisfying 2D twitch.

The neo has been abandoned entirely if I understand the situation correctly, except for possible 3rd party games.just look at the NEO-GEO it still brings us good shooters (METAL SLUG 5) after being more than 10 years! on the market..
DC still has life left in it, though an asian/modded ps2 has become the new system for shmups. Recent DC efforts are just throwaway games by small companies, which so far haven't been any good. PS2 is getting the games from your treasure, takumi, cave, etc. type 'real' companies. I mean this in the most non-trolling way since DC still has its share of excellent titles...but if you don't have a modded ps2, you're missing out on the good stuff.

Well, I have a non-modded Japanese PS2 and I am coping just fineNeon wrote:...but if you don't have a modded ps2, you're missing out on the good stuff.
Your comment makes sense though. But I'll happily support the DC untill it's
REALLY dead as a system. I am a fanboy for this machine and am not ashamed of that.

I think the shmup releases for both systems have been pretty good. That's why I'm proud to own both a modded Dreamcast and a modded PStwo! I get to enjoy the ported-from-NAOMI releases on the DC, and the home-only/other-arcade platform releases on the PS2
Not to mention the great variety of other wonderful games for each.
Hmm, Trizeal the last shmup for the DC? Could be, but similar statements has been mistakenly made several times before. Radirugi seems a possible, maybe even likely port. Senkou's not a shmup per se, but it looks helluva sweet, and I'm sure I'll be grabbing that one as well.

and input lag, and slowdowns which don´t correlate to the onscreen action. Basically, all the bad stuff we´re used to from PC world is coming to the arcades. It sounds so much like a cliché that I argued against everybody predicting this when Type-X was announced, but from actual reports it looks like Type X is, at least to me, the worst case scenario that could happen to arcades. So there's no reason to retire Naomi for many years to come. I'm pretty sure it was that second option, since the game hasn't even been to its scheduled third location test.
Is somebody a little anxious?
NCSX is local for me, so, the same cost for default shipping ends up with the package being delivered a week and a half earlier than from Play-Asia.
