Speaking of freeware games, you should really check out rRootage, but unlike last time when I posted here, I'll provide a link. It's crossplatform too, there's a version for mac, one for linux, even one for PSP. Also I think a few more. Great for beginners (But I personally think later stages are quite hard. Others may disagree), and if you have trouble forcing yourself not to credit feed, no problem with rRootage, because you can only play one stage at a time, and no continues.
XOP is also pretty good stuff, I think, and I don't think anyone else has mentioned yet. Here's a link

I would like to say Genetos is a good freeware game for beginners. It might be odd since you start out as a space invader style stage, but the game changes up as you progress (I think your ship has to evolve since whatever that green bar is, you need it at 800 to battle the stage boss). You also get a surprising generous with the amount of lives since you start with about 15 in standard programmer (10 in hacker. My numbers could be off). I guess it will teach you some basic skills while giving a brief history of how shmups evolved.
I don't find it as visually intense as Crimzon Clover (except maybe the last stage of Genetos, but I try to tune out the mess happening in the background to focus my vision on the bullets).

Ok, so I got set up and did a test stream. It seems to work just fine, the audio came through and everything seems good. I didn't record it and I'm not sure if Twitch will auto record it or not. I don't see anything under my videos tab for the test stream I did previously so I'm not sure how that works.
At any rate, is it ok to make a topic on the general forum here when I stream? I don't know what the rules are about that sort of thing but I'd like people to have the chance to come see me play and maybe give some advice. I have a regular job so I won't have a set streaming schedule which is why I was wondering if I could make a topic about it. Any advisement on this would be appreciated.
