started watching Midnight Eye Gokuu - first words on screen:

'Tokyo, 2014'

:o

you can definitely tell it's made by same people as Cyber City Oedo 808.

Read that last line and immediately decided that I had to watch this.
Also, about to rewatch Oedo because it's so damn good.

Goku is bad ass. Finally just got the complete manga awhile back. It's Buichi Terasawa adapted by Kawajiri with his cool blue touch, violence, and a penchant for the weird, so you'll love it. Gah, I wish someone would re-release Wicked City already!

you can also tell it's made by the Ninja Scroll people - it has those cold eyes and sort of 'chilling' enemies when they appear

Yeah I'm going to rewatch Oedo very soon.

Doomed Megalopolis' antagonist was the direct inspiration for Street Fighter's Dictator.

Japan got a remastered DVD not very long ago, and it looks terrific. With a bit of luck, someone like Discotek may pick it up for release.

Coincidentally with all this Midnight Eye Gokuu talk, these came just last week:

edit: oh I should mention they're laserdiscs, which I've started re-collecting recently.

Nice! Yeah, I've thought about snagging some cool laserdiscs and vinyl; they've always got such cool art. Then I remember I've got too much crap and not enough money. Well, a few can't hurt...

yes I would advise against collecting laserdiscs if you value space. That said, I don't really have room for much of anything either, yet I can't seem to stop myself from buying more shit like some sorta fucking klepto.
Though laserdiscs these days can be absurdly inexpensive (at least Japanese discs are), going for a few measly bucks on average. Hell, I just grabbed the complete Sol Bianca OVA on LD for 10 cents not three days ago.

Bubblegum Crisis 8 disc set was my first ever laserdisc purchase some five years ago. Probably the reason I started collecting. Though video quality may have been bettered several times over now, the cover artwork is second to none, largely thanks to all that real estate on the sleeve they have to play with.
My laserdisc player isn't even functional atm, but I still find myself buying laserdiscs, if just for the cover illustrations.

Goku Midnight Eye was one of the very first animes I ever watched. Rewatched it a few months back and it was glorious. I adore that black/blue palette 80's OVAs are so fond of. I'll check out Tokyo Vice ASAP.

Probably going to regret asking this in the long run, but do you guys have any recommendations for buying LDs? Would prefer not to dick around with YAJ, but have a sudden yearning to own Bubblegum Crisis on LD.

YAJ is the best place for Japanese laserdiscs without question. I've scoured the web for alternatives, but to virtually no avail.
If you really don't want to use a proxy service though, here are a couple of sites I came across:

http://www.urabanchou.com/index.php?main_page=index

urabanchou was recommended to me by another forum goer some time ago, and though I have not purchased anything from the site as of yet, it does seem to have a somewhat decent range of laserdisc titles and at moderate prices. I think they only sell singles though, so if you're trying for a set of something its going to add up.

http://www.lddb.com/

laserdiscdatabase has a shop section where users sell to each other, and there are several sellers (some even selling from within Japan) that have a lot of anime discs for sale. Unfortunately these sellers are charging pretty absurd prices on most of their stuff, I myself have only ever bought a single LD from there.

yeah so unless someone else can chime in and provide a good place from which to purchase laserdiscs, Yahoo Japan is your best bet for both availability and price, even when factoring in commission fees and shipping.

Mmkay, just watched Midnight Eye Gokuu, the first part.

holy actual fuck

That was so god damn cool. It hits on every damn note. The motorcycle chick, the pole, Gokuu's masterfully stoic attitude, the sheer sense of style. Badass.

Like, Raytrace sums up my thoughts perfectly:

How's the shipping and the proxy price usually add up though when buying through YAJ?

drauch wrote:How's the shipping and the proxy price usually add up though when buying through YAJ?
Well you have to pay fees to the proxy on every single item on both shipping and on the item itself, which certainly does add up. But if you're smart in how you go about it, you can minimize costs to a certain degree.

Anyway the answer to your question in much more detail is.…
Spoiler
it totally depends on which proxy you use. Some have numerous charges and rates that differ between each of them. Forms of payment can differ as well as some wont allow for paypal.
I went through several before finally settling on a middleman. Using my preferred proxy service as an exemplar, here’s how it is broken down:

So lets say you win a sweet looking Guro mag for 1,000 Yen (about 10.00 USD) in a Yahoo! auction, you’ll have to add to that the 200 Yen commission fee, and a 5% System Usage fee (for supposadly using their system  ). With this your first charge, known as “Charge 1” ends up being = 1,260 Yen (translates to roughly 12.30 USD)
You have to pay this "Charge 1' within a couple of days of the auctions end.

Once you’re ready to have the item shipped to you (and they’ve received the item from the seller), you’ll need to pay a final “Charge 2”.
This charge comprises of Domestic shipping, which is set by the seller in the item listing so for this example we’ll say 500 Yen.
The Bank transfer fee, which is a set fee of 172 Yen.
International Shipping (highly variable as you have to consider weight and shipping method). For this example we’ll say the mag weighs 500 grams, which would cost as little as 580 Yen via Small Packets (SAL), to 1,500 Yen for something like EMS.
Add another 5% System Usage fee ( ), and the “Charge 2” comes out to = 1,314 Yen (12.80 USD) if the slower SAL is preferred shipping method, and 2,280 Yen (22.30 USD) if the swifter EMS is the preferred shipping method.

Basically "Charge 1" is the payment for actual item, and "Charge 2" is shipping payment. So combining the “Charge 1” (which you already payed after winning the item) with “Charge 2”, your Guro mag will end up costing you 2,574 Yen (25.10 USD), or 3,540 Yen (34.60 USD) depending on your choice of shipping.

This example is for a single item. I personally get multiple items shipped to me at once as it is much more cost effective, especially when using EMS shipping method. Plus most proxy services allow up to a month before they want your stuff out of their warehouses.

Obviously the more expensive and heavier your items are, the more those two lots of 5% System Usage fees come into play. Though this is where combining multiple purchased items for final shipment pays off, as the second 5% fee is only applied to a single "Charge 2" payment.

Sorry for the shit tone of text. Proxy's can be pretty hard to wrap your head around at first, and I've never been too elegant in my explanations (watch someone come and condense what I said into an easily understandable single sentence)

And now I've seen the second part of Gokuu. I kind of need more badass 80s/90s OVA recs.

Not as cool as the first part [didn't feel as well written either], but still top-notch stuff. As usual, Gokuu's ending lines are masterful.
Seeing Ryu sink into the ground instead of fly into the sky was crazy awesome though, like he's descending to Hell.
Spoiler
the part where Ryu cuts the head off of the chick who's having sex with him is absolutely horrifying
