I used to, and in a certain way, still am a gamer in that sence that I like everyhing. I've played japanese RPG-s, platform, fighting and basically everything since the age of 5. But one year ago I sort of got tired of the repetition of games, and invested time in shmups. Ironic, ain't it?

Now most of my regular games lie on the shelf, and even Metroid Prime 2 which is a very good game, and I loved the first one, but I just can't pull myself togehter to play it. What I do nowadays is what I call "play for score". I like games that are quick and can give me a ride for 15 minutes but also take much time to be really good on. Past six months this basically means some puzzling, shmupping (most of course) and also playing musical games such as mad maestro, umjammer lammy and amplitude. Ordered DDR 2 weeks ago (stil friggin waiting man) so I will also start dancing now; a genre which is exactly the same way as discribed before.

Just recently I've devoted my video game time to shmups, so before then I was heavely into RPGs. Some of my favorites would be:

FF6, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics, Disgeae, and my all time favorite, Xenogears.

I've also got into 2d fighting games such as King of Fighters and Guilty Gear. And I like Devil May Cry and am currently working on DMC 3.

But it's weird, when I frist got into games(around 88'), I've always glanced at shmups, either browsing through a buddies cabinet, or quickly trying a game at a pizza joint. So it was always an interest but it really didn't hit me until a few years ago when a buddy from Basic Training told me about MUSHA, and later on I bought it off ebay and instantly found a new genre to put some time into(though it was an on and a very long off time with it). Sorry if I got a bit off track but most of my time with video games wern't shmups though it might change as time goes on.

Wow, who could have guessed my tastes could change so much since I posted in March?

I now really like beatmania IIDX and am slightly partial to Guitar Freaks. Considering trying out Pop'n Music sometime too...

My favorite types of games when not playing shooters seem to be racing and variations of RPG/adventure. 2D platform is also good.

Of late, i'm desperately trying to get decent at Go, at least back to my teenage levels. I would like to play Mahjong with my chinese friends without getting trashed, as well...at least, they're very kind, maybe because i'm a man and they're women? (yay for sexism, i'd add).

Oh, and some videogames, i think they're called in that way, i mean those you can play when putting discs into those things, the consoles???

I'll play anything good, except for sports games (only because I'd rather shoot some hoops in real life than do it in a videogame) and FPS's (only because I get motion sickness from 'em).

In fact, except for a couple of games of Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie, I haven't shmupped in a few days.

Recently, I've been playing a ton of DQVIII (which has hogged my US PS2 since before Thanksgiving), with some Heroes of the Pacific (XB) and Gunners Heaven thrown in for extra spice.

Haha, righteous. I played that for the first time in a year or two just last night. For me, it's tied with Pop n Twinbee as best shooter on the system.

Shooters are definitely not my favorite genre. The main reason I'm here is because I happened to be going through a big shooter phase when I discovered the internet and this (I think it was mk2 in late '99 when I found it?) was the first message board of my life. However, I love the shooters and play them fairly frequently.

My fave genre is puzzling for sure. Mr Driller, Magical Drop, Pop n Pop, Puzzle Bobble and more are some of my biggest favorites ever. I also really like platformers, run n' guns and a few fighters. I'm picky about the fighters.

I like some 3D stuff but certainly far less than the 2D stuff. I don't have an irrational fear or hatred of 3D graphics or gameplay, but there's alot of pap out there these days (like always) so I'm way selective. I'm looking at Otogi 2 next.

I play about one RPG a year. This year it's been two. Robotrek and Final Fantasy Tactics. FFT is in its 93rd hour and I know I have a long way to go. Odds are, I skip next year's RPG. Especially likely as I'll probably put 20 hours or more into FFT in 2006 before I finish it.

I never touch FPS or RTS. I just don't appreciate that stuff. I rarely touch a racing game but I've enjoyed every Mario Kart and I really like Outrun 2. Micro Machines on PS1 and RC Pro/Am should both get an honorable mention. Neo DriftOut is my favorite racer in history.

I play chess, against my friends and online. Quite enjoy a bit of that. Also partial to a bit of poker.

I love strategic games, games where strategy has to be devised and executed in order to succeed. RTS games like Homeworld 2 (God I love that game) and turn based stuff like Advance Wars and Worms 2 I could happily spend days/weeks/months on.

I'm also partial to a bit of simulation stuff. My all time favourite is SimCity 2000, although I love the Theme games by Bullfrog, Populous, Civilisation 2, Settlers, Caesar, Pharoah etc etc. Has to be totally deep and involving. I like watching my Sims go about their daily business, it's like being Big Brother ^_- (Currently looking into Animal Crossing on GC and DS.)

What else? 2D platformers, RPGs, funny games, the occasional puzzler, non-serious racing like Mario Kart, non-realistic racing like Wip3out, real and simulated pinball (Necronomicon! Sonic Spinball!), some fighting games (Soul Calibur 2, SFA3, Samurai Shodown 4)...

.. and shmups.

Puzzle games, hardcore racing games (with emphasis on time trials, I hate racing the AI), score-based Arcade games, and 2D platformers

I play alot of capcom platformers and puzzle games generally. Strategy is good but I can't seem to find the time to complete the games. I used to like alot of fighting games but I got bored fighting with the computer AI and still haven't botherd to pick up and xbox for street fighter online. Every once and awile I'll go through some randomly chosen Nintendo or 2D Konami game.

Icarus, did you manage to finish Theme Hospital?

I found both Theme Park and Theme Hospital to be some really crazy "simulation" games. In both games you have to think SO DAMN fast and react SO DAMN fast to emergencies, geez, sometimes the adrenalin go as high as playing a shmup.

Playing Theme Park in Full Simulation Mode is crazy. There are SO MANY things to look for.... I always played it in the "middle" setting, so I didn't had to keep buying stocks for my stores...

And in Theme Hospital, the 2 last levels are just... fucked up. It's like everything goes wrong (and I mean EVERYTHING) at least 3 times in less than 30 seconds while a VIP is visiting your hospital.

That game was crazy. Last boss of Dodonpachi DOJ is a piece of cake :)

From what I played of it when it was first released, Theme Hospital seemed to be a multitasker's dream.

3D action adventures mostly.

MGS
Ico
GOW
POP
SOTC

I like some SF 2D fighting, puzzlers as well. I love run and gun games, like MS and Spinmaster. And I love Bubble bobble even though its the most unfair game ever.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Yes, eventually. (There was a bug in the game which crashed the game on the last stage, you needed the patch to fix it.)

The trick is to manage your patients carefully by using the Queue commands. If one doctor ever got swamped, shuffle some to another doctor and you'll get through them quicker.

I really enjoyed playing through Theme Hospital, some of the "illnesses" were quite humorous to see. ^_^ Might dig it out again, since talking about it has got me in the mood for it.

Yeah, the speed of the games is one of the things I've liked about the Theme games. Unlike the Sim games by Maxis or the Civilisation/Alpha Centauri stuff where it's more leisurely and the emphasis is on micromanagement, the Theme games feel like action simulation games. It's a shame Bullfrog didn't make more. (I heard rumours of Theme Aquarium a long time ago, but I don't think it ever surfaced.)
Shatterhand wrote:Playing Theme Park in Full Simulation Mode is crazy. There are SO MANY things to look for.... I always played it in the "middle" setting, so I didn't had to keep buying stocks for my stores...
I've always played Theme Park on "Full" settings, as I like the management functions. It took a very long time but I eventually worked out how to build the perfect full-scale park without running out of funds. Take out LOTS of loans as you build, as the amount of visitors is determined by the size of your park, and the amount of individual shops and rides you have. Once you get the park up to a decent size, you start making enough to pay back the loans you take.

I still have my save file with my full-size park completed, making stacks of cash every day.

Yeah. Emergencies suck. But it wouldn't be a hospital if things didn't go wrong on a regular basis in those games ^_-

You should try Beach Life if you like sim stuff. Making an Ibiza-style beach resort is great fun, as is watching people skinny-dip in the pool at night, or vomit all over the place after a drinking binge ^_^ Best thing is, you can play your own MP3s as BGM ingame, using the in-built MP3 player. I have a selection of trance in a special folder just for the game. ^_-

My version already came with the Patch... I didn't play it when it was new, I think I actually got it 2 years ago.. (3 at most, as it was a friend of mine who gave me his copy, and I only know this guy for 3 years)

Yes, I did all that, care about each queue, put people who are about to die in the front of the queue, shuffle doctors... it was exactly the opposite of Sim City, as you said... just to compare, in Sim City 2000, when an emergency happens, the 1st thing I do is PAUSE the game, hehehe :)

I found Theme Hospital more enjoyable than Theme Park...

I'll take a look at Beach Life... had never heard about it before, is it a new game, or is it old?

I try to play anything that's made well, fun to play, and sometimes different. I enjoyed Umihara Kawase the first time I played it, and that's pretty different. You could say that I try to enjoy the best of all genres. Generally though, I'm not a fan of dime a dozen games: Madden / most sports / Tom Clancy. As far as sports games go, I've always liked Wind Jammers on Neo Geo. ;)

Fairly old, made by Eidos and Deep Red, maybe three or four years ago. Still very good fun (I still play it now and again, on my Powerbook, using Virtual PC). It might be difficult to find in the shops

A bit of info is here: http://www.ferrago.com/story/569
A quick Google link to a list of sites that might have the demo is here.

Outside of shooters I play pretty much everything, and I don't mean that in the sense that someone who doesn't really listen to music might say "I listen to a bit of everything" - I do get through an awful lot. I have a rather bitter aversion to stuff like Call of Duty, though. I like my games to have a touch of enthusiasm and cosmic romanticism. In fact, I demand it in spades. :P

In terms of racing titles, I favour fantastical arcade-style games like F-Zero*. Fallout, Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment comprise my favourite RPGs, but I certainly play more Japanese RPGs than Western ones...

I spend most of my gaming time on shooters (especially now, since this forum's competetive mentality is rubbing off on me a little), but I don't think I'll ever reach a point where I'll only play these games, because while I don't just play at the weekends for a few hours of fun, I don't exactly play with the dream of achieving total mastery either. Truth be told, my favourite game of all time isn't even a shmup; it's Super Metroid. :)

once or twice a year i enjoy the occational FPS too :) Killzone was the last one i played.

Dude, the first 2 Burnouts were pure twitch-based masterpieces, it's only the latter two dumbed-down sequels that are crappy.

Myself, a bit of everything really. I'm big on quick-fix gaming seeing as I only seem to be getting around four hours a week at present. Arcade racers are my favorites, and I loved PGR 2 but it was way too long.

Currently,

GTA SA
Metal Arms
Magical Drop 3

Only console & arcade formats are supported

All 2D Fighters
3D racers
puzzle games, allthough there are so few
2D platformers (*including run & gun)
Flight sim 3D

love to get into light gun games

* Run & gun is not a genre. run & gunnners are only platformers at their best! More like the supreme status of platformers.

Play chess with friend offline, analog, i.e. on a real board.

This thread is very unique in that there is probably no other thread we all so eagerly post in yet not caring that much about what the others wrote.
IMHO, guestimating.

Love Racers and anything out of the ordinary (assuming it's any good). Still play copious amounts of Halo 2 online even though it's frowned upon. Used to play RPGs, but I despise them now. Used to be a huge fighter fan, but majorly phased that out of my regular playing routine due to lack of people to play with. I used to live in the arcade on Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat/Neo Geo in late middle/early high school.

Currently playing (other than Halo 2 almost every day):

Half-Life 2
Killer 7
Soul Calibur 2

I actually just picked up SC2 the other day. Was playing three on PS2 Saturday night and it resparked those SC on Dreamcast days. SC2 is very nice... I like it better than SC3 by far. Sorry I didn't pick it up when it was new.

I seem to be only playing games from these companies

Konami(Gradius/Contra/Castlevania)
Capcom(StreetFighter 2/Ghouls and Ghosts
Sega(Shinobi/Sonic/Streets of Rage)
Nintendo(Mario/Metroid)

Those are really the only games that I play now.
