I'm thinking about Gradius final boss. Does this thing even have an utility apart from being there ?

Those gradius guesses are worthy candidates, but not the one I was aiming for.
Keep trying.

Gigawing1 did only have 4 different ships (GW2 had 4 secret ships = 8, GW1 on DC had 1 secret = 5 total).

I went with Gigawing2 because the DC port could be played with 4 players simultaneously... 6 in 1, half dozen in the other.

1944: The Loop Master? If you thought the music for that was bad you clearly haven't played the first Strikers. :P

What. I can deal with people saying later Psikyo music is bad, because I see where that's coming from (bad samples). But Strikers 1 has great music, I don't see any way to say it doesn't...

Emphasis on the "if" and the perspective I'm trying to point out here. I personally wouldn't call it terrible, or unfitting, but the later Strikers and what I played/watched of 1944 shat all over it in every department. If you consider the later ones "bad", the first is going to look even worse.

I think we can all agree on 1942 though. BEEP BEEP BEEPBEEPBEEPBEEP. *breakbeat for five seconds* BEEP. *breakbeat for five seconds* BEEP. Couriersud's improvements to the discrete circuits in MAME running the music for 1942 sadly failed to put enough glitter on that turd, although considering the age of the game itself it wasn't too bad for its time.

Now I come to think about a broken old boss in the background of some 'Pachi games. But which one ?

This one is real hard, do we seek an actual game, or just a part of a game ?
