Aicom was made up of, or had, ex-Irem staff that made R-Type
and/or R-Type II

go to this page http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php? ... ight=aicom and read through post #68 - there are a TON of quotes with links about the Irem-R-type - Aicom-Pulstar connection.
thanks for backing me up

I stupidly can't remember is Pulstar or Blazing Star the one where the default high score initials are all three digits instead of letters? It might have been some other SNK game.

Regardless, it was cool because it turned out tat the numbers were the head designer names written down the high score lists in hex form or something.

Last Resort's soundtrack is very badass. Both the original and remixed NeoCD versions. It was a surprisingly dark game for the time.

Alpha Mission 2 is sooo much fun, I know I mention it like any time SNK and shmups come up but I love that game. :P

I wish I could get in contact with the guy again, I knew someone who worked for SNK, actually was able to piece together a modified Neo CDZ that loaded at 6x instead of the standard. Good but you didn't want to play it for more than three hours at a time. ;)

prof ganson: If your front-loading NES is giving you trouble, replace the contacts. 99% of the time the problem is that the contacts are worn away/oxidized because Nintendo stopped using gold ones after a while to save money. You can get a 72-pin gold connector (usually for around $20 or even less if you really shop around) and replace it yourself.

If the problem is the bullshit brass/silver contacts and you do this replacement, then once you do your NES will literally run and sound better than it ever has. No blowing on the game or any other crap, just put the cartridge in and it's ON flawlessly, it's like it's 1986 again. The cartridges will fit in much more efficiently too, no more cartridge shifting around and destroying your game because the cat bumped into the NES. You don't even have to actually push the cartridge down into the loader, just as long as it's inserted completely so that it's touching the contacts. Great stuff.

You could also get one of those fake NESes for around $40 or so now that the patent has expired on the hardware. Most of these are pretty dumb. If you do get one get the one by Yobo, it's awesome, though no lightgun or other peripheral support of any kind.

Alpha Mission II...fun, fun, fun...that game is sweet. I love the black hole, nuclear and homing missile weapons.

Viewpoint...frickin' sweet azz game.

Last Resort...R-type rip off? so what, who cares...its still fun as heck.

"""""""Last Resort is soooo awesome. The atmosphere in it holds up surprisingly well given its age. Beautiful animation and you can see both the R-Type influence as well as how it influenced later R-Types.

I love charging up the pod and blasting it against that entire line of turrets in the second level.

Pulstar and Blazing Star are great fun. I don't see how anyone could dislike them.

Zed Blade: Operation Ragnarok is so repetitive, and yet I love that game too. It definitely succeeds in getting that Ikaruga/ROBOTRON: 2084 zen state when things get hairy. Though it does suffer from some enemies just taking too many damn hits to kill for it to be fun. It gets to be a chore in level five.

Viewpoint, God damn that game is hard. I saw a video of someone one-lifing it on level eight! It was the most glorious thing I've ever seen in my life.

Andro Dunos is pretty fun. Lighthearted. You get weapons you can switch between at will like Sidearms or Rock-on.

Alpha Mission 2 is fantastic, that's another game that if you don't like, you just don't like fun.

Prehistoric Isle 2 is cool, but I almost prefer the original if you can track down a PCB. At least try it on MAME, awesome shmup.
I'm w/ you for the most part. The only games i haven't tried yet are Ghost Pilots and Viewpoint (shy of mame). I really like Last Resort and Blazing Star though. I enjoy the oldschool feel more i think.

I'm using Alpha Missions 2 as to show my friends what i want to do for level design on a shmup were designing.

Alpha Mission II and Last Resort are my fav Neo-Geo shmups.

I also recommend trying Ironclad - get a cheap CDR copy of it and play it in Nebula or any NeoCD emulator that you can make it run. It's pretty cool and unique - not the best shmup ever but worth trying.

Pulstar I have mixed feelings over. I am a HUGE fan of R-Type, and I do like Pulstar, but it seems they overloaded Neo-Geo with such intense graphics that it slows down too much. Pulstar is still a must have but I actually prefer the older Last Resort which has artwork like R-Type II.
