Yes, Gradius V has analog speed control. Some players even used it.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

How do I configure the difficulty settings for a game in MAME? For some reason when I loaded up Deathsmiles it started on easy mode and gave me 5 lives.

Hold down F2 (brings the game to its configuration menu) and Ins (speeds the game up so you don't have to wait as long).
After changing settings, you may have to do a specific input to get the game to actually save them. For example, in Dodonpachi you have to hold F2 until the game resets itself (so F2+Ins once more it is!).

I have the Korean B version of Armed Police Batrider. My A, B, and C buttons are all functioning. I also see the shot frequency number in the top right (I play as player 2 but the problem also affects player one side). When I hold the start button and tap A or C, the shot frequency doesn't increase or decrease. Am I doing something incorrectly? I was looking at the dipswitch manual and I didn't see any settings that locked the frequency.

has anyone experienced this before?

I believe only the Japanese version supports input frequency changing. Really stupid...

gah...

It's still confusing why they even display the shot frequency if you can't change it but I figured it was something along those lines.

It could be like Garegga where tapping faster will raise it. I haven't experimented much with it.

Weird. This works for all my other ROMs but not Deathsmiles :?

Hold down 0 (zero) instead, once you've gotten to the attract mode.

I screen capped the default settings:

I actually tapped my brains out before making the post and didn't see any noticeable difference in bullet pattern. I'm hoping it's just that the Korean version doesn't implement shot frequency instead of my board needing repair.

I did also notice a weird flickering at the bottom of the screen on Sky Stage which scared me a little bit too.

Gunbird usually comes up in that conversation, and Strikers II, I think...not that I've actually accomplished any myself, heh.

I consider myself terrible at Psikyo games but I was able to 1-ALL Strikers 1945 II and Strikers 1999. I think 1999 with the secret ship is the easiest of the two.

If you include horis, Sengoku Blaede is the easiest Psikyo shmup I can think of.

In my opinion it's Sengoku Ace. It's the also first game Psikyo released.
The best thing about it is that the second loop isn't nowhere as tough as what you get in their further releases.

Gunbird 1 has to be among the easiest. There's literally nothing difficult in the first loop.
Now that second loop, that's another thing.

Does anyone know of any celebrities that have ever publicly expressed an interest in shmups? Just curious if there are any well-known fans of the genre.

I can only think of gaming "celebs" really.. like them game grumps twats playing Gradius III on the SNES for a while, and parodius later i think. It got something like 200k views and i'll be damned if more than 10% of those viewers actually play shmups, or know anything about them. Although the video does nothing to expound the guy's interest in the genre as a whole.

Another popular youtube channel - Two Best Friends Play (there's actually four of them) mentions shmups quite often and respectfully in videos and podcasts etc, but don't actually play them.

Yeah that's about all I can come up with. Granted, it might not be the easiest thing to shoe-horn into an interview about your latest Hollywood blockbuster but it'd be nice to find out that say Bruce Willis is actually a huge fan of mushi. Or Billy Bob Thornton can clear Garegga.

Skrillex did.
Let's just hope no shmup will ever feature his 'music'.

Hmm, well he certainly qualifies as a celebrity, not a particularly satisfying one though.
