Use of analogue stick in shmups
Have there been any console shmups which use the full capabilities of the analogue stick (variable speed / move in any direction) rather than just moving in the standard 8 directions?
Also, I was wondering, have there been any shmups released for a console in recent years which weren't arcade conversions?

Gradius V (which, I believe, can also use the analog stick for variable speed), Star Soldier...and I don't think Twinkle Star Spirits: Le Petite Princess was ever an arcade game.AGC wrote:Also, I was wondering, have there been any shmups released for a console in recent years which weren't arcade conversions?

Confirmed, you can use the analog stick in Gradius V for variable speed control. The 2 main points where this comes in handy for me are:Ghegs wrote:Gradius V (which, I believe, can also use the analog stick for variable speed),
1. Control past the "brain" thing in stage 2. Yes, it can be easily done w/ the D-pad via "tapping" but the analog works & produces a comfort level, knowing that you won't tap too hard.
2. If you use Weapon Type 2, the analog sticks offer more precise control of the direction of fire. Especially helpful if you use lasers (who wouldn't?), particularly when you're going through narrow corridors with enemies on both sides (or top & bottom).
The real trick is to make sure you switch back to D-pad for movement the rest of the time - the analog control for basic movement just feels to slow & doesn't have that "exactness" to it.

Can you direct the Free Range with the analog stick (on the Saturn version)? I'll have to try that sometime.FREE RANGE - I honestly think those two words sum the whole TF5 experience.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

You'd be controlling the ship. The Saturn analog controller is either/or for analog/digital. You can't have both active at the same time, afaik.it290 wrote:Can you direct the Free Range with the analog stick (on the Saturn version)? Actually, the PSP d-pad can be modded into a much, MUCH more better form so it matches up to the Saturn d-pad.gs68 wrote:Gradius Portable. Screw the PSP D-pad.
For the do-it-yourself gamer.
There's also a cheap kit on the eBay that does the exact same thing. It's nothing more than the add-ons for the d-pad and face buttons, but they're of nice quality and saves you some effort. I went this route. The modding itself was an easy job, though I admit it was nervewrecking at first.
I also acquired the d-pad cover from SFZ3. Those two put together really makes a HUGE difference.

Er, in TF5PS you do control the ship while moving around the Free Range... It's not like there's a separate use of the right lever...FRO wrote:You'd be controlling the ship.
