Yes, I looked.

I'm looking for some good metal groups that have that brutal, dark, death style, but sing about happy, positive things, ya know? Like friendship and stuff.

Really you'd have more luck looking for gay hip-hop or communist black metal.

Gojira is about environmentalism, fighting against the whaling industry, anti-war, and overall positive.

Decrepit Birth is more or less about "finding the light" and recreating yourself into a better person

Cynic is sorta tech death (at least the earlier content) and Paul Masvidal is one of the most spiritual people I've ever encountered. I'd like to think Death went into their more positive direction due to him even though he was only a part of of the "Human" release.

Happy Death Metal is pretty much an oxymoron though since death metal is supposed to be dark. Happy lyrics are kind of out of place in the genre.

their lyrics are very weird sci-fi a lot of the time, but it's usually pretty positive. it gets a bit darker and less tech death the further back you go into their discography.

I think their name actually means "being reborn in your elder years".

Yup, actually meant it.
Though it wasn't really common during the little period of time I cared about hip-hop (some year during the 90's).

One thing that's annoying with the 21st century and the internet is that you get the feeling everything has been done already and you can't really find anything new and original, you can only review existing stuff under a different light, taste a slightly different flavor and that's it. I mean I was joking a bit about commie black metal then googled it and saw there's actually quite a bit around. [RegalSinism]It's like rule34/fetishes, since the day I've learned about mohair fetish and concrete wall fetish I believed our human species has finally reached a peak in civilization development. There's nothing really new and fun to invent.[/RegalSinism]

One can always form a happy death metal band, it will make the buzz for about a few weeks and then fall into oblivion like your average meme.
May that fecal music from that south park episode "you're getting old" needs to become a thing.
EDIT: okay I KNOW there's dubstep already...

there are still completely unique/original bands that have formed in the 21st century - it's just a bit more difficult to find.

one example off the top of my head is Daughters. They're a math/grind core band that continually builds on new loops via a loopstation. I remember when they opened with "daughters spelled wrong" both guitarists were pre-recording a loop and once the song started they were already playing something different over the original loop - while recording new loops at the same time. one of the most unique things I've seen in quite awhile

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_E2IjzWn_0

there's also behold... the arctopus (an example song I'll show you is "some mist" :P) which is 20th century classical inspired metal with the use of a warr guitar (I know it's been used before in bands such as king crimson) which is a 12-stringed tapping instrument.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIqQ81eJDe4

the possible closest band would probably be the flying luttenbachers which is still pretty far off.

Saw arctopus back in 08', dat bass guitar. Missed Daughters when I was into listening to this type of music; sounds like a hyper Dillinger.

I'm so jealous you have no idea. That means you got to see them with Charlie Zeleny as the drummer while touring on Skullgrid. I got to see b...ta last year with Weasel Walter on their Horrorscension tour and I knew it didn't compare whatsoever to the prior lineup (imo). I missed their last skullgrid tour in 09 and they didn't tour again until they got the new drummer. It was funny because I was one of like 6 people at the show. It's crazy how niche their music (and the likes of Mick Barr, Zach Hill, etc..) really are.

fortunately I saw Daughters on 3 separate occasions. One of the times the "midget" drummer was blowing coke off his cymbals and the singer was completely sweaty trashed slopping all over me and my friends in the front row lol. You're DEP comparison isn't really helping my argument :[

edit: I would easily trade all the times I saw daughters just to see the b...ta lineup you did.

Sorry, didn't really read through your entire argument, I'm kind of just recalling bands while discovering the ones you named  :P

Also, this was @ a club that got shut down, red blood club, there were like 20 people there for the actual band, the rest were drug users and alcoholics. I was 17 so I had to see all this sober. :|

I saw Daughters once, awesome gig but really wish the vocalist would stop gobbing everywhere.

Most cohesive/innovative use of loops I've ever seen in a band is Nissenenmondai. Guitarist bouncing layers between two DD-6s. Just watching her feet was enthralling. Check out Destination Tokyo. Best Kraut/math/whatever album ever released.

I usually find death metal a little draining. Production is usually too clean to show off those technical riffs. Getting in to scuzzier stuff like Entombed at the moment. Hardly cheery though.

Loads of black metal bands shout about nice things, Wolves In The Throne Room for example.

Listened to the Daughters thingy!
Can definitely see the TDEP comparison but their use of atonality sounds more related to the noise-improv stuff that Boredoms and member have been doing.

The albums Yoshida did with Haino are awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GPx0vKvp3M

That's really awesome. The only other Yoshida/Haino stuff I'd heard were pretty heavy, with Haino wrecking havok with the guitars and growls. This one sounds more like Ruins with Haino providing vocals(which is exactly what I wanted from a collaboration between them).

I'm not sure if Christian religious lyrics are your type of thing, but check out Earth From Above's album, "Numbered With the Transgressors". Their lyrics are positive but it might come across as preachy.
http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/earthf ... ors.html#1

However, the most positive lyrics I've come across in this genre are probably in As Blood Runs Black's album "Instinct". They are actually deathcore though, not death metal, but they are good.
http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/asbloo ... nct.html#2

Here's a couple of their most positive songs.

Resist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh3pS1gVbwc
We will overcome, we will overcome
Climb this mountain we face
We'll push through everything
Without
Without a reason to move
There is no living
Resist, resist the forces that drain
We carve our own path
Create our own way
Resist, the easy way out
There are no shortcuts through this maze of life
Burdened, but we will succeed
On the path that we've created
Make a decision
The choice changes everything
Commit yourself
There is no turning back
Overcome
And make this moment count
Make this moment count, make this moment count
Within each one of us
There's a coward and a king
Practice what you preach
To become what you believe
It's visible on the surface but not underneath
Now you can see perception is reality
It's all or nothing, you only have one life to live
Always remember
To remain on your path
And resist what holds you back
(We will overcome)
To remain on your path
(Move on)
And resist what holds you back
(Overcome)

Reborn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZmYXXDWbVI
Undo the chains of the past that are holding you back
Reclaim all that has been taken away from you
Deconstruct the walls in your mind that are making you blind

Break free from negativity that will shadow your life
Search for a reason to change
Life reveals itself when the decision is made
To move on and let go
It will help you unravel this road
You must – you must seek the truth

Seek the truth

Waiting for something to change
But what stands in the way is your hopeless
Outlook of reality
Deconstruct the walls in your mind that
Are making you blind

Break free from negativity that will shadow your life
Search for a reason to change
Life reveals itself when the decision is made
To move on and let go
It will help you unravel this road

See your way through

Self corruption manifests the darkest days
That man has ever seen
But the disappearing sun is controlled by you

Just believe in yourself
Don’t give up
Don’t give up
See your way through

Realize that the past is now left behind
That is where it belongs
Realize that the past is now left behind
Don’t forget where you’re from

Embrace the change – this is where you belong

In Honor (This song was written about those serving in the armed forces) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAwByd6Rndk
We are the ones that fight for freedom
United we stand
We walk through hell for you
And we are (we are) the protectors
Risking everything we have
Who will you look to when everything you know
Starts to crumble?

Enough is enough

Clinging to your memories
Will you dream of me or will I be forgotten?
Remember me

And when the struggle and the sacrifice
Becomes too great to bare
That’s when I look to the sky to discover who I am
And the reasons why I chose to let it all go
But I didn’t know that the cost would be so great
Do I leave it all behind and forget what I know?
Will I ever learn not turn to my back on the face of evil?

I only hope that someone’s watching over me
As I look my demons in the eyes, I wonder why I’m still here

We are the ones that fight for freedom
United we stand
We walk through hell for you
And we are (we are) the protectors
Risking everything we have
Who will you look to when everything you know
Starts to crumble?

Never forget, we will never forget

Remember
Those who sacrificed their lives
And honor – the legacy they left behind
Cherish their memories
Deliverance from this nightmare

We commend you our brothers
Have courage and be strong
Awaiting your return for far too long
Welcome home!

hopefully you got to see them while they were on their hell songs tour(s), because I think that's when they were at their prime.

never listened to Nissenenmondai but I checked out a couple songs and it sorta reminded me of Marnie Stern for some reason. good shit.

I've actually got celestite preordered (cd digipack and cassette (1 of 300) via their bandcamp). can't wait for the new release.

Cynic and Lykathea Aflame have pretty overtly positive lyrics. Atheist and Death sang about positive things too, extolling different virtues of life in opposition to ones they saw as false and deranged. A lot of classic black metal operates on the same principle. But you have to engage deeply with the music/lyrics to appreciate that--it probably won't just jump out at you.

So yeah, I think the better route is to try and hear the "happy"/triumphant/exultant parts that already exist in a lot of death metal, than to look for some act who preimposed an emotional scheme for the sake of novelty or formal experiment.
