I'm looking for some good metal groups that have that brutal, dark, death style, but sing about happy, positive things, ya know? Like friendship and stuff.

It's more common than you'd think. Check out Mykki BlancoXyga wrote:Really you'd have more luck looking for gay hip-hop

Didn't know about Decrepit Birth yet, gonna check it out.Some-Mist wrote:Awesome stuff
Yup. I have a buddy who is always sending me links to new hip hop stuff, the weirder the better.Never_Scurred wrote:Heard of Cakes Da Killa?jonny5 wrote:It's more common than you'd think. Check out Mykki BlancoXyga wrote:Really you'd have more luck looking for gay hip-hop
their lyrics are very weird sci-fi a lot of the time, but it's usually pretty positive. it gets a bit darker and less tech death the further back you go into their discography.Eno wrote:Didn't know about Decrepit Birth yet, gonna check it out.

awwww, so cute, they're like the ibara sistersEno wrote:Old internet fad, but Japan's got you covered. No death growls though, and I have no idea what the lyrics go about.
there are still completely unique/original bands that have formed in the 21st century - it's just a bit more difficult to find.Xyga wrote:One thing that's annoying with the 21st century and the internet is that you get the feeling everything has been done already and you can't really find anything new and original, you can only review existing stuff under a different light, taste a slightly different flavor and that's it.
Saw arctopus back in 08', dat bass guitar. Missed Daughters when I was into listening to this type of music; sounds like a hyper Dillinger.Some-Mist wrote:there are still completely unique/original bands that have formed in the 21st century - it's just a bit more difficult to find.Xyga wrote:One thing that's annoying with the 21st century and the internet is that you get the feeling everything has been done already and you can't really find anything new and original, you can only review existing stuff under a different light, taste a slightly different flavor and that's it.
one example off the top of my head is Daughters. They're a math/grind core band that continually builds on new loops via a loopstation. I remember when they opened with "daughters spelled wrong" both guitarists were pre-recording a loop and once the song started they were already playing something different over the original loop - while recording new loops at the same time. one of the most unique things I've seen in quite awhile

there's also behold... the arctopus (an example song I'll show you is "some mist") which is 20th century classical inspired metal with the use of a warr guitar (I know it's been used before in bands such as king crimson) which is a 12-stringed tapping instrument.

the possible closest band would probably be the flying luttenbachers which is still pretty far off.
I'm so jealous you have no idea. That means you got to see them with Charlie Zeleny as the drummer while touring on Skullgrid. I got to see b...ta last year with Weasel Walter on their Horrorscension tour and I knew it didn't compare whatsoever to the prior lineup (imo). I missed their last skullgrid tour in 09 and they didn't tour again until they got the new drummer. It was funny because I was one of like 6 people at the show. It's crazy how niche their music (and the likes of Mick Barr, Zach Hill, etc..) really are.Aleksei wrote:Saw arctopus back in 08', dat guitar. That's really awesome. The only other Yoshida/Haino stuff I'd heard were pretty heavy, with Haino wrecking havok with the guitars and growls. This one sounds more like Ruins with Haino providing vocals(which is exactly what I wanted from a collaboration between them).Eaglet wrote: The albums Yoshida did with Haino are awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GPx0vKvp3M

fuckin lol @ the first link. the yoshida/haino album is pretty sweet though.Eaglet wrote:Listened to the Daughters thingy!
Can definitely see the TDEP comparison but their use of atonality sounds more related to the noise-improv stuff that Boredoms and member have been doing.

hopefully you got to see them while they were on their hell songs tour(s), because I think that's when they were at their prime.MX7 wrote:I saw Daughters once, awesome gig but really wish the vocalist would stop gobbing everywhere.
Most cohesive/innovative use of loops I've ever seen in a band is Nissenenmondai. Guitarist bouncing layers between two DD-6s. Just watching her feet was enthralling. Check out Destination Tokyo. Best Kraut/math/whatever album ever released.
I usually find death metal a little draining. Production is usually too clean to show off those technical riffs. Getting in to scuzzier stuff like Entombed at the moment. Hardly cheery though.
Loads of black metal bands shout about nice things, Wolves In The Throne Room for example.
Cynic and Lykathea Aflame have pretty overtly positive lyrics. Atheist and Death sang about positive things too, extolling different virtues of life in opposition to ones they saw as false and deranged. A lot of classic black metal operates on the same principle. But you have to engage deeply with the music/lyrics to appreciate that--it probably won't just jump out at you.that brutal, dark, death style, but sing about happy, positive things, ya know?
