Alright, this is gonne be one hell of a beginner post but I think I'm in the right thread at least.

I have no musical experience at all, the only instrument I have is an acoustic guitar that is standing in the corner for years now and is collecting dust.
For some years now I've gone from various metal genres to the more electronic world of music and for quite some time now I'm thinking about getting into music-production, you know, as a creative hobby. As I said I have no experience whatsoever so when I listen to songs like this or that one I feel that I'm liking them, I can somewhat get into the rhythm but I couldn't tell for example what hardware was used in the song.

Can you recommend me any ressources on how to "get into" electronic music? In terms of what hardware is available, how to get started, essential albums or good communities?

Thank you very much in advance!

Greetings
a computer is all you need to "get into" electronic music. you have free softwares like lmms(free, windows), FLP and ableton (paid, windows), install it, explore its capabilities and yours. get a bunch of free vst's and fx plugins (recommend, synth1 free, tal free plugins, voxengo free plugins), see what you can get up to. try remaking songs you like, or try re-imagining songs you like. then may be get a good hardware keyboard with midi support (makes things easier). do learn some music theory if you dont know already.

just sharing my view as a beginner...

Get Abelton Live 9 Suite. Suite includes soft synths and a fully featured sampler.
The fact you can get MIDI from audio in 9 is just amazing and so incredibly empowering.
For example, you can record a bassline, then hum or sing a melody over it into an audio recorder, then open that audio and extract the MIDI in Abelton and use a synth to play it.
Get a cheap MIDI keyboard, but if you can afford to get Push with Abelton Live Suite 9 do that, and you're all set.

As for samples : Goldbaby is your friend. If you want to buy some more soft-synths or perhaps an 808 or 909 emulation I'd recommend D16. Their Lush 101 (Roland SH101) and Phoscyon (Roland TB303) and their 'Silver box' collection of effects are particularly high quality, too.
Sylenth is a great analogue emulation which features in quite a few pro studios productions.

I have a few bits of hardware, I have a Nord Lead 2 and some pedals, but I mainly use those for creating sounds which I then emulate on virtual synths and FX.

Once you get familiar with LMMS, why not give renoise a try. Tracker desktop audio workstations (DAW) were the way to make electronic music back in the day and provides a lot of control on your sounds. Initially hard to learn, powerful musical tool at your disposal.

yeah, reaper and renoise seem like a good cheap alternative, both full featured under $100. or, you can go the other way, install linux with ardour, qtractor and go crazy...

thanks for the kind words and repost..in regards to how i got the drums so crunchy i'm not sure.i just have a mainly dry flat mix with a slight compression on the whole thing.the samples are 16 bit but often re recorded through multiple programs such as sound forge etc and pitch shifts while keeping the sample the same length can often crunch the drums up a little plus the 3 main types of amen i used and chopped up are all eq'd differently.

anyways got a new moody and atmospheric modplug one! but soundcloud seems to be shitting the bed :(

yeah I do think that even certain programs have a little bit of a sound, I'm convinced Re:Cycle crunches stuff a little :).

Checking that new one now, class stuff man - Movin Shadow helicopter break style \o/. I love that 'darkside' sound which was there just
before everything started to be called 'DnB' - I love Formation Records stuff from that era.

great stuff man thanks - that is a legendary tape - I actually had it, lost now though - 'pump it pump it up a little louder, I wanna feel the bass in my trouser!'

the tape I had it on had a Top Buzz one from the same time around - ace.

gachet was a beast back in the day..him and randall for me were the right mixture between the dancefloor ,dark and intelligent styles.
it's so annoying to find a particular set. i've been looking for a certain ge real and mc chickaboo tape that was one of my favourites back in the day.i've found sets of his with some of the same tunes but never the exact one :x
i love that darkcore stuff. my favourites are probably hypes weird energy, doc scott drums and goldie terminator but most of the stuff on reinforced was sick.

yeah those are 3 class tracks alright - I love any of the DJ SS stuff too - my Reinforced stuff was actually on the lighter side - Nookie (of course :p). I have a Tek 9 white label one though - I suppose thats's darker, though a bit kinda jazzy too, whcih aint really my thing.

yeah and Gachet used that Depth Charge/Shaw Scope sample too didnt he: 'do you rememeber a small waterboy?.. I am Hando Lin,Hang Wong's son, I'll die after you, I'll see to that! - You're crazy...' etc. :D

I believe they in general (much like where I'm from) hated the breakbeats back in the day up your way though didn't they? Didn't SS or someone get booed off stage for playing jungle ?

yeah I like early Gabba and I actually also love when they had the 4/4 under the breakbeats sound (which unfortunatewly eventually led to cheesier happy hardcore) ,but things like MC Lethal 'Ravedigger' and Top Buzz sorta stuff I love - donk or pretty much anytype of cheesy 2 - 4 syncopated bassline can GTFO though :p.

yeah i liked that 4/4 breakbeat stuff as well when it was done tastefully(which quite a lot was). one of my favourites in that style was fat controller's in complete darkness.
as soon as the breakbeats went out and the towtown hixxy sound came in i was done with it tho which i think was 95/96 and that was the time i moved to scotland.
ooh i remembered another darkcore classic as well champion sound.i used to have a tape with mad p from top buzz mc'ing on it.makes me sad my mum through out my tapepacks :(

Champion Sound was amazing.
yeah I still love breakbeats on top of 4/4s which is why (although I don't think I ever end up actually sounding like that sound) I pretty much always do have a breakbeat somewhere over my mainly 4/4 tracks.
Even the SMD 12"s were still great - I dunno it's once the brekbeats sorta dissapeared and the donk/2/4/bassline noise was emphasised I was not into it at all. Also the sorta proto supersaw (well probably a sample of or an Alpha Juno/Hoover at the time) on the 2-4 always sounded totally cheesy to me.

In fact that's why in general I don't like a lot of 'DnB' - the whole point to me of Jungle was the breakbeats, so when 'DnB' emphasise the kick and snare 1 - 2 two step thing, without hardly anything in between being audible, well I just don't really like it. Havinmg said that at the other end of the spectrum when breakcorey stuff goes completely out of it's way to make sure the patterns are impossible to memorise in any way and or dance too, just for the sake of being obtuse, I'm not into that either.

oh man oh man oh man, that is such a classic tune
That and Six Days are my two favorite tracks in that style.

Mind you, I still like bouncy hardcore and gabber.
But man, the breaks made the tracks have a groove to them that the standard 4/4 kick stuff completely lacks.

I've tried to make some stuff like that myself, but I'm awful, haha. Also, other than chopping up other oldschool tracks [mind you, which is exactly how In Complete Darkness was made, it's 3 or 4 songs mashed together, but I'm talking about other rave stuff], I don't have the samples for it.

God, I love Renoise. The demo's free, only restriction is no rendering anything to anything [used it like this from 2008 [or was it 2007] to 2014 before finally buying a license -- not being able to render synth instruments to sample was bugging me like hell, since Renoise at its heart is a fucking beast of a sampler, it's what it does best]. Not too terribly hard to use, but might take a bit of practice to get used to.

but I know people who look at it and run screaming for the hills
The demo is free and unlimited use time, though [it does nag once an hour after using it for more than 100 hours].
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

They also did the one that samples that (which I'm not sure what it is) 'Through bushes and through brambles' song...

Also

Alan Fitzpatrick edit of Edge 1 - Compunded
It's basically a re-edit and mash up with a Shed track. It's alright, if a bit lazy. He could've done something like Tessela.

I'm back in the swing of having a huge urge to make music each night so far since last week. So far I've managed to create some Ambient Techno and have Over There, The Sea to share. Rhodes, pads and a pulsing kick-hat combo are the mainstays of this tune. Also favorited by one of my favorite Deep House artists Kaito.
