Puzzle and Dragon kind of swallowed that niche, but it isn't exactly a virtual world.
Since Pokemon is a really big and well known franchise any lawsuit against a company that might have cloned pokemon could end in a bankrupty, you know, you'd better don't make Nintendo angry if you don't want to be crushed like a fly.
