And that's 240p, playing some samples of other games...
Yet, to me it sounds a lot better. I've tried to contact Gecko to get him to upload a 720/1080 version, but he's pretty much dead.

The SNES is overrated as a whole music wise.
Little knew how to get the most out of the good ol' MD - Sir Yamanishi, responsible for the best sounding cart shmup ever, did.
I don't think I'm telling you something you don't know, but Technosoft's games (near all Genesis exclusives, while at it) were amongst the best sounding of the Genny library, whereas Toaplan's are horrid (sound-wise, not playing-wise).

I'm dying to know how Colony and Mother would sound in FM format.

I tend to prefer genesis music over SNES music as well. Especially anything Technosoft, Jesper Kyd, Sega, or Noriyuki Iwadare. Toaplan music is kinda bad. I think it's mostly the tones they used, though, rather than the composition. That's part of why I like Kyd's music so much, is that he got some kickass tones using his custom driver. Same with Technosoft, though not quite as good. But I tend to prefer the Technosoft music overall the most.

Composition can make anything shine. I mean, just look at the chiptune God, Tim Follin, in Chronos. That computer only had a beeper, yet he managed to get it to play four tones at a time (!) using less than 5 KB (!!!).

Then again Metal Squad wouldn't sound as good on any other console...

Half and half, I'd say.

This is a touch off topic, but speaking of Metal Squad awesomeness, and TFIV in general...

Yeah, I have! There's so many excellent genesis tunes.
You should check out the tech demo "Overdrive" by Titan. The BGM is done by Strobe Flux, and it's REALLY AWESOME. I use it as BGM for rRootage, sometimes

Yeah, the 32x can get some cool sounds, though there aren't too many examples, unfortunately (that I've heard). Here's one really awesome one though:

from Cosmic Carnage. It's very Funky, which is something the Genesis generally seems to excel at.

guess i'll go with sol-feace, though no mcd means you have to play the silly-sounding md version... may as well play the x68000 version at that point.

composition cannot make anything shine; some songs are completely ruined by poor instrumentation choice. super e.d.f. is a great example of this, while ghost chaser densei (for the most part) is a great example of the opposite.

also... while i agree with you for most md toaplan ports, md hellfire and md same! same! same! both sound a good bit better than their arcade versions, and i can appreciate md zero wing going in its fairly different direction.

That terribly dated Yamaha sound design

They can take the funk outta games, but they can't take the funk outta me, or something.

HO! I had never heard that one. It's excellent, I tell you! And that game only uses the YM2612 in the Genesis - there's no audio related hard from the 32X in it.

Ow. Perfect counterexample. What a choice you made there.
E.D.F. is one of my (if not THE) biggest favorites when it comes to arcade games - great part of that is because of the undescribably good music.
The SNES couldn't pull off music as clean due to the sample rate it has, but still it could've sounded so much better than it did.

The money I'd give for a faithful Mega Drive port of the arcade original...
And seeing how well it could pull shooters off, it's such a crying shame it never got one.

/rant

Going off on a tangent - does anyone in here write MIDIs? Given I could sit on a rock and die before the port I wish would be made, I'd like to try to mimic the MD sound chip and do covers of E.D.F.'s soundtrack like LegendofRenegade has done with other games.

Midi probably wouldn't do the trick. IDK, you might be able to find a soundfont that sounds like FM synth, but generally for the MD sound you want to use actual FM synth, which you can do with a tracker program, but I imagine it's a little trickier than composing midi. I think FL studio might support or be able to support that kind of stuff with plugins or something. There's some good emulated YM2612 stuff composed that way by, for example strobe (fairly well known internet electronic musician who does a lot of chiptunes stuff) Here's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evZIkmLz_uk
@13:56
I don't know that 7 trillion ghz is my fav. strobe chiptune, but it is pretty good. I quite like the one he did for the Titan Overdrive MD demo, but that's not emulated.

Sorry for contributing to thread derailment guys  Maybe we need an FM Synth music thread, or something. We could talk about the PC-98 Touhou games, and the numerous X68000 games with excellent OSTs, as well as Technosoft games and others on the Genesis / MD.
