i thnk that the best console for the shmup games is the "sega genesis", my favorite, personaly, is the game Thunderforce IV and Eliminate Down. But the thing I wanna know is, What`s yours?

Wow, good question... MegaDrive/Genesis exclusive? I'd say Bio Hazard Battle - love the setting, music, and the meta-sprite graphics used in the game. Very atmospheric game.

Not quite sure if it's my favorite but Air Buster (A.K.A. Aero Blasters on the PC Engine) has been spending a decent amount of time in my Genesis. Then again I really don't own many shmups on the system.

Countles great 16-bit shmups on this system, seems everyone has a different favorite. For myself Thunderforce III will always remain unmatched, it set new standards for how fun and playable a hori shmup could be - much like the original R-Type did in arcades. And the epic Gaiares takes a stellar second place. Honourable mentions list stretches to over a dozen.

Gaiares is really overdue for a sequel It was never even re-released or ported to another system. Who owns the IP, I wonder...

THUNDER FORCE III but MUSHA ALESTE(damn i love this game ) "i can`t decide"!!!

Not naming anything that hasn't already been named but Thunderforce III gets it for me.

Kudos also for Gynoug (Wings of War) and Bio Hazard Battle.


And while Truxton was average in my opinion that smart bomb was amazing!

I haven't played most of the good ones but MUSHA/Alesta and Thunderforce 4 were the best ones I grew up with (Trouble Shooter got a lot of play too)
Recently acquired Elemental Master and Truxton which both are a lot of fun too. Some day I'll start collecting old megadrive shmups again.

I'd have to say Thunderforce IV or the USA version of Lightning Force ftw. It sure would've been awesome to see a dedicated Thunderforce IV arcade PCB with more refinements + obligatory 2-player co-op mode. ^_~

Those are my favourites on the Mega Drive. Both are really good and need actual skill if you want to complete them. Musha Aleste is also nice, but it's really really easy.

If Mega CD games count, Keio Flying Squadron is ace, too. (I'm digging the Saturn sequel even more, though.)

It makes me very sad that no one has mentioned Darius II aka Sagaia yet.
My favorite shmup on the system, alongside Thunder Force IV, Zero Wing, Eliminate Down, Subterrania, Wings of Wor and MUSHA.

If we go to borderliners, there's the awesome After Burner II.
And for the Sega CD, Silpheed and Robo Aleste.

After playing both the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 version & Sega Genesis version of Air Buster/Aero Blasters, I'd have to go with the classic PCE/TG-16 version of Air Buster/Aero Blasters as it is a better and more intense shmup experience with the actual engine running at a silky smooth arcade-spec 60fps framerate. ^_~
