Galak-Z (win, ps4, & ps vita) rogue like asteroids

Post by Laurel_McFang »

There is probably a bigger fan of this game out there, but 17-bit's new asteroids meets rogue like meets 80s Mecha cartoon shmup is at GDC and getting some good coverage:

Polygon GDC interview:

Press play interview:

Giant bomb quick look:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVeOKbUFplE
  • you have one life
The game takes 45 minutes to an hour to complete
It's rogue like so each play through is unique
    Different factions fight each other
    Open world
Will update with gifs and more videos when I find them right now time for work.
No release date yet, but should be soon.

I was initially skeptical, but the game really does look fantastic. One of those games that just looks like it controls beautifully. Hopefully they make the most of their roguelike redesign and have a ton of different variables instead of a bland mess of a map.

Check out the interview for info on variables and difficulty and yeah I wasn't to thrilled at first (a do luftrausers still looks like more fun), but it's vita bound and looks awesome, the interview made it sound a lot better.

How many hits can that one life take before game over?

Good question and one not answered by the devs. Appears to have a shield system similar to Halo where it recharges if out of combat for awhile.

Strange I remember searching and seeing it in top ten wanted lists, but not a thread itself.

Aside from the fact that you're in a spaceship and can shoot lasers, it's not much of a shmup at all, even according to the developer (they described it offhand as a "physics-based simulation game"). It's important not to come into this expecting it to be a hardcore shmup when it's not.

That said, it still looks awesome.

How is this even remotely "rogue-like" :? Has this term completely lost any meaning at all?

It seems to have become indie shorthand for:

- Designed for many repeated, short playthroughs
- Randomized elements
- Permadeath

Some people have taken to using "rogue-like-like," but that's probably even dumber.

Even that aspect has lost its meaning. These days most self-proclaimed roguelikes let you carry over stat or equipment upgrades to the next play.

I believe each play through is random and you're expected to finish the game in one sitting.
