That was supposed to read "except under Windows on that machine, it's routed through to them".
I figured it out under freebsd, I think. Disabled all system beeps, and the one beep the machine does when you plug in to mains/unplug is really soft now [that part was a happy accident, I dunno how to adjust it further

and then this morning I awoke to bring the machine up as normal, and apparently freebsd's NDIS wrapper thing hates these wifi drivers -- started X shortly after loading them, everything dies horribly, disk corruption, system got stuck in a reboot loop, did fsck in single-user mode and said yes to everything
but apparently, doing anything with the machine while wifi is connecting is cause for a crash
