Anyone play Dreamcast shmups on anything other than a DC pad

Post by Arznei »

Because this pad is going to give me sore hands. Are there converters available (specifically so I can play with my saturn controller)? I'd really like to play some of them, but not like this. Not with this thing.

My accuracy sucks with a stick. I'd rather just stick with saturn pads, or PS2 pads.

hardware forum ;)

Anyways I got something called an innovation connector, lets you use mouse/ps2/ss on DC, works well, has a VMU slot.

just be careful with that innovation adapter. Plugging it in and out while the console is on is BAD news. I fried something in mine doing that and now it doesn't save to vmu anymore. CHUCKS!

I use a Total Control Plus in combination with a PS2 Saturn style pad. Works like a charm and, unlike the other Total Control converters, saves to VMU.

Total Control 5, you can use saturn, ps and dc memory card.
Only with Third Strike I can't map to the z and c buttons, but I guess it's the fault of third Strike, caus all other games work like a charm

I use the Total Control Plus with my HRAP. It supports VMUs and doesn't seem to have any lag (I've tested it with Space Channel 5, as it would show up there). The TC+ has a switch on the side that isn't explained anywhere on the packaging, but it alters the input mode. I know that the right side position is joystick mode, but I'm not sure about left and centre (guessing controller and dancemat?)

has anyone tested the keyboard input on the total control 2? Cause the one on the Innovation converter just plain sucks. It has lag on the keystrokes and can only handle one key being pressed at a time. Very annoying, and making fps games impossible.

The official Dreamcast keyboard sells for pennies these days. If you've got the room to sling it somewhere, you might as well get one. And get Typing of the Dead while you're at it :D

I do have a dc keyboard, but I'd rather use a mini keyboard, and using this adapter means I can have a vmu and saturn pad plugged in at the same time.

Awesome, TC+ sounds good. I assume it works with a saturn PS2 pad?

I had lag problems with the Total Control Plus (tested two of them to make sure.) using Hori Real Arcade Pro sticks.
Playing Ikaruga was terrible, even though I did get my highest Chapter 1 score while using it.:?

Herr Scatten, did you get your awe-inspiring Trizeal score using a PS2 saturn pad plus TC+? I've been looking for an ascii pad, but this sounds like an easier/cheaper option.

No. That score was achieved using the crappy standard DC pad, as I didn't have the TC+ at the time. But I used it to get my ALL in Radirgy, if that means anything.

Thanks very much Arznei for making this thread; mine came in today, and now I'm playing House of the Dead 2 with turbos, made possible by my Matt-made Saturn controller connected to a Matt-made PlayStation converter, now connected to the Total Control Plus. Perhaps for extra craziness I can hook up the PlayStation and Dreamcast cord extenders I have lying around. This video is dedicated to you, I guess. :P

I'd say it's lag-free, but there is one downside, though: it doesn't recognize my official Sega 4x memory cards. But since not a lot of games absolutely require data to be in player 1, slot 1 to save and load (AND make me want to use anything other than a standard DC pad), it's not a big deal.

I'd still be interested in getting a Matt-made Saturn > Dreamcast converter, though. Where the hell is Matt? :x (no, not this Matt...)

That is one bad ass rapid fire circuit you got going there! I thought I had a turbo on my lightguns but I don't think its even half as fast as that!

I've received my TC+ and could only test it on a friend's DC. It works fine with my PS2 stick (with the switch in center position), it's OK with the VMU.

Thanks again for the advice :D
