Are there any golfers here? (need advice on clubs)
Are there any golfers here? (need advice on clubs)
For some strange reason, it seems that the golfing bug has bitten my family, and on Saturday, my dad and both of my brothers purchased sets of golf clubs. Since all the cool kids seem to be doing it, it appears that I will be shortly following suit as well. I'm wondering if there is anyone around here who plays golf, and what type of clubs you use. I'm looking for a good starter set, and was looking for advice.

I just started too, I would advise asking someone in your proshop to help fit you for some clubs, tell them your price range. You don't need a set of PING clubs just something to start on that will be sturdy and relativly inexpensive.

I did do some browsing around at the shop, and you could spend a fortune on clubs ($300 for a driver alone, $1,200 for a set of irons, another $200 on a putter, and I didn't even really look all that hard...) I'm thinking something in the $250-300 range, which I have seen complete sets in (drivers, irons, wedges, a putter and a bag.) I need to go do a bit more looking around, and maybe make a couple of trips to the driving range.

I'm sure I'm going to get corrected on this but stores like Wal*Mart are reasonable as long as you arn't willing to Brag about big brand names. Just find something that fits and feels good.
When you're just starting you don't need the best tere is just something to play with, then you gradualy strat too buy "better" clubs one by one.

I use a set of Bridgestone clubs that I bought secondhand at a pawn shop, and a driver and putter that got rotated out of friend/family sets after they decided the clubs weren't improving their game. The Bridgestones are excellent and fairly unique-- instead of separate irons and woods, they're graded from 1 to 11 with 10/11 making fine wedges and 2/3 making very usable fairway woods. I'll probably need to get them re-shafted soon, weather's been great lately.

All I can say is don't spend too much on your first set, at least until you really decide you like it. My dad told me a while back, when he was trying to get me in to the sport, that your swing will likely change while you are starting out, so that any good club you buy now may not be good for you in a couple of years.

Has anyuone had any close calls to killing somone while golfing...I did.
I hit a really far ball and it almost hit a guy in the head, it would been hilarous if it hadn't been so deadly. I have a hell of ta time not hitting the ball to the right though.

I went back to the golf shop I was looking at this weekend, and tried out a set of irons that seeme to work reasonably well (I was able to make solid contact more consistiently than the last set I tried) although that would leave the issue of everything else. I could get away with those and a putter for now (Until our skills improve, we're sticking to some of the local par 3 courses, the longest hole on those is 170.) Drivers are very expensive by themselves though, so that would probably cost much more in the long run.
