That is absolutely hideous. Quite how the guy thinks the cab in it's original form is ugly compared to the eventual created monstrosity is beyond understanding.

My response to this:

Also...do people even play games with Trackballs anymore?
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I don't see the problem - if he'd raped something that people no longer make anything like, that would be much worse. As it stands, JP style cabs are still incredibly common, and still being made - so really, it doesn't matter at all. Good cheap source of decent parts. Also unlike most mangled MAME mutants, he actually built a new shell himself by the looks of things.

Still not something I'd own though, dear god, the buttons...

Really, how can someone put so much effort on something and still completely fuck it up ?

I mean, so player 3 is supposed to play using the RIGHT hand, and at a completely screwed angle from the screen?

And what use does the "ABCD" buttons have at the LEFT of the main sticks ?

A Trackball may be useful for certain games in MAME, but I really wouldn't use two trackballs.

And there's ANY arcade game that uses 8 buttons?

it seems like he's never been in a japanese arcade so it's not surprising that he thinks that it's ugly

That is pretty much what a lot of these custom-made MAME cabinets look like. They end up like some sort of gross mockery of a real arcade cab.

I think the trackballs are used for lightgun games as well as for Marble Madness style games. I don't mind them as much as I mind the "five million buttons" approach!

Surely it isn't hard to make a set of replaceable control panels for different control systems? Given that a cab's internal workings can be modular, I don't know what the point of flooding the control panel with buttons is, other than to confuse the crap out of someone.

Sure, you'd have to keep changing the control panel if you wanted to play something different that required a trackball or something else, but anything is better than the 'keyboard on a cab' setup.

I'd definitely prefer the 'less is more' approach.

This is a perfect cab. If you wanted to, you could easily add a trackball and a couple of spinners there, and still it won't be heavily cluttered.

Did anyone ever designed a cab where you could easily rotate your screen if needed? And I mean easily.

Edit: here, a good cab with trackball, spinner and stuff. It isn't that hard, is it?

http://www.mamenation.com/

Ok, it's not really all that pretty, but it's functional, and that's the most important, I guess. And it isn't all that ugly anyway (I just didn't like the artwork in the stickers and stuff)

That's excellent; did you design/make it yourself, or is it a pre-built cab with that feature?

What a tit. He has the audacity to call the Pony ugly then creates that monstrosity. I hope the police (the law enforcement agency, not the band) see his website and arrest him for being a dirty pirate.

In Soviet Russia, Pony rapes you.

That's really sweet, bloodflowers. Do you even have the CO2 smoke effects when you open it, like the cockpits in mecha anime?

It's a standard Europlay II. Really, really convenient. You can turn it in a couple of minutes literally.

Having looked at '1.jog' I would have to say: Nice rotation, shame about the design and button layout  I could see myself having to replace the sticks, too ;)

I've always been baffled as to why some people think having "Mame" scrawled all over their cabs was.....attractive. I realize that on cabs with spinners, trackballs, and multiple joysticks authenticity is not a high concern. But.....damn. Seriously people, what the hell? Almost as bad as having characters from multiple games on one machine.

Then again, that's not even as bad as that friggin monster of a control panel.

Then again...what do you expect from a guy that didn't know what JAMMA was before he started collecting parts?

I fail to see how any "fake" arcade cab can be perceived as better than any real arcade cab; candy or woody.

If you want to build so Mame mostrosity fine but buy a monitor and a jamma loom rather than fucking up a real cab.

I agree. That used to be a beautiful cabinet, regardless of whether or not it's common. He destroyed something "true" to use fucking MAME on it :x

Yeah, the button layout is terrible - came like that, seem factory drilled too! Luckily I only ever play 3 button games, and use the top triangle. The sticks? No, no no - those kick Sanwa into next week. I've never been able to find a makers stamp on them unfortunately. They're relatively tight and very, very accurate, with a short-medium throw (shorter than the Sanwas in my JP style cab).

As for the design - well, that's purely down to taste, I think it's really nice - good screen angle, retro style. I don't like Japanese cabs at all, only own one because it was the only thing I could get with a 28" tri-res screen, needed for a project.

It's not the screen angle or general style that bothers me, more the decals (stars and 'grid' lines on a black background are very '80s, in a bad way!) Trouble is, even on a cab I hated the design of, I wouldn't be able to bring myself to paint over the decals or anything, as I'm quite big on preserving arcade heritage and all that. Think I'd have to attach temporary black fabric over all the decals just so I couldn't see them

Edit: Just did a search. Very nice price for that cab, too! Unfortunately, I'll be in the US soon and so will not be able to take advantage of the at-cost shipping. :(

Not sure the guy hosting that photo actually has any left to be honest. I was at his storage unit some months ago and there weren't any there - may have been out on site of course. That one pictured is my machine, I bought it from him about 5 years ago now, cleaned it, and he nicked the photo ;-)

Hm - can't find a better place to mention this since rotating screens were mentioned:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 6286851898

I think that's the easiest screen rotation -ever- without exception. The seller ended the item early because I bribed him to, should be here next week ;-) Pop some new sticks in, maybe paint the panel+monitor case black, job done.
