PS2 JPN to North American HDD/Network adapter question

I just got a Japanese Playstation 2 and a North American HDD with Network adapter and I wonder if I am able to obtain the BBNavigator disc, I can just format the hdd and the Playstation 2 can reconize it? I tried the HDD without formatting it but only the Japanese PS2 cannot recognize it.
