Requesting reviews of some games

Post by x2wolf »

The games are Overkill (by Epic Games), Raptor: Call of the Shadows (developed by Mountain King Studios [originally Cygnus Studios], and Flatspace II (by Cornutopia). Unfortunately, I neither have yet gotten aroung to getting the full versions of any of these and my reviews of some of them would probally end up biased, especially of Overkill.

Here are the ways to get them, since you can not just go pick them up at Best Buy.

Overkill

http://www.epicclassics.com/orderform.html This is the last way to get the full version of Overkill, at least the only legal way that I know of.

Raptor: Call of the Shadows

http://www.3drealms.com/raptor/

This game is probally one of the best of the "buy your weapons" genre, but judge for yourself.

Flatespace II

http://www.lostinflatspace.com/

I have not gotten a compter that can run this yet, but from what I have read this is much differeant than any other shmup, and it is really obvious this is not a traditional one.

Thanks, even if it takes awhile for any review to be made.

I'm not sure if I understand this correctly. You want us to buy a bunch of games and then review them for you? I'm not sure if I should post a LOL or a WTF. That's probably the most bizarre marketing ploys I have ever seen.

While we're at it, I would like a review of PinkSweets and a capuccino. No sugar please.

Uh.... c'mon guys. Not really a way to welcome someone. I seriously doubt the original poster expects us to buy these games. Most likely hoping someone here already owns them and can share their thoughts.

Can somebody get me that DoDonpachi Blue Champaign version. Spare no expenses.

Thank you, x2wolf for setting yourself up so fulnerable for attack. It's like you turn your cheek and say you get the first punch for free.
Ok so now we all feel guilty and do whatever you ask us out of guilt.

Yes, but I need someone to tell me how much I should like it.

This one's fairly tolerable if you've never played Tyrian.

I bought the boxed version of this off ebay a while ago for like $5. Its pretty much vertical gradius, and is quite awesome. Definately one of the better western made shooters.

Sorry, was just trying to be helpful. Wanted to see what actually good shmups players thought of those games, and told you how to get them since they are harder to find.

Well, my post was only half in jest. I would really like someone very knowledgable to play it to death and then write his opinion. Are there any reviews of this thing on the internet? Even in Japanese? I haven't found any.

Well, Raptor sux.

That's the opinion of a good shmup player. Well, not that good actually, but I've played more shmups than, well, the average guy.

Oh, you want a review, right?

"The game stinks. It's boring, the levels have an uninspired design, and the game screasms "Bad european shmup" everywhere. Tyrian is a much better shmup in the same vein. Rating: 3/10 "

Here, you have a review now :)

Never played the other two games though.

Of Pink Sweets? Surely you could get all the feedback you ever wanted from 2ch.

For one thing, I would not understand most of it. If there was like a one-page review in Japanese I could probably understand some of it with the help of a dictionary. But I am not going to go wading into Japanese forums armed only with my current Japanese language skills... Or maybe I should? I've never tried it.

But the important thing here is that I want to read a well thought-out, structured opinion, by someone who knows Raizing's and Cave's work inside out. Forum posts are a dime and dozen, and helpful as they are they don't provide what I am looking for. I am not a Raizing expert myself--I've only played Mahou Daisakusen and Ibara a bit--so I wouldn't be able to write a review, even I had access to the game.

Ok, well, I disagree with that. Tyrian is prettier and has more variety, but I like playing Raptor a lot more. It has more actual dodging, and the enemy HP doesn't get out of hand at higher difficulties. Overall, Raptor feels way more balanced than Tyrian. YMMV. And I'm not going to call myself a good player. But you now have another review, of sorts.

I apologize for the reception, x2wolf. I suspected that you were the reincarnation of another forum member on account of the 'x'2'y' format of your handle and the familiar flavor of your question.

The members here are generally tolerant, friendly and helpful, and I'd be lying if I said that I didn't post several goofy threads when I first registered here.

Yeah, welcome to the forum. It's already good to be posting in Shmups Chat instead of heading straight to the Trading Station.

Speaking of "x2y"... is Jacco still around? I haven't seen any new threads today...

Raptor isn't a bad european shmup - it's a very average American shmup.
I used to dig it back in it's day when the only thing I had in the home that could play games was a 486.

Tyrian is much, much better. And European.
It has it's flaws too, but is by miles the most content-rich shmup of all time, and it's almost 10 years old now.

Well, to my knowledge. Tyrian is freeware (unless there is proof that it is not). This is the site I got it off:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~vannevar/tyrian/index.html

I have already beaten it, mostly because I used the overpower laser (might be named differeatly, have not played it in awhile). In response to the guy who said that he liked Overkill, I am suprised since what I have read on the net refers to it as average.

The other game I mentioned, Flatspace II, is a little known more rescent game in which you have the same view of the ship as you would in Astroids. Unlike any other Shump I have ever heard of, it is sort of like a mmorpgs (definately misspelled that, but you probally know what I am talking about) with bots replacing the people. The site I gave early has a demo that I have been playing for the past week.

Finally, is there any other games similair to Raptor or Tyrian for the PC?

Naw, I just learn to skip over or pay little attention to unneccesary criticism against me. Thankfully what jp said is not true (no offense to jp).

Future Dimension kicks ass of Raptor AND Tyrian at the same time. One of the finest euro-shmups produced for the PC.

Could you give a link to a site I can download Future Dimension? The only site I found requires you to pay a little, and of course I would prefer to find a free way first.
