XRGB2 question

Post by neorichieb1971 »

I've found an XRGB2 (grey one, not the plus) for $100. Its supposed to be new, box has been on the shelf along time.

Is this is a good deal? I really would like it for that price, I know its rare now because its the 2 and not the plus, but I don't know what features the plus has over the 2.

Give me the insight! thanks.

Sounds a great deal for its price. XRGB units use to sell for more.

But I really don't know the difference between 2 and plus. Sorry.

I think the XRGB2 non plus will support progressive scan. PCE Fan X knows more. PCE FX? Your reply, please.

I don't know what you mean by "supports progressive scan". Of course being an upscanner it can output 640x480/VGA. It can not output 480P component, nor can it take in a component signal, only RGB.

$100 is a good deal.

Thank you all for your precious info !
I'll have the JP version, the cover design is the cutest
I don't care about the VGA compatibily since the game is in low-res, it will look gorgeous on my 15khz TV

Differences of XRGB-2 and XRGB-2+ versions...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

I heard someone calling the 411 on the XRGB-2 and the answer is here.

The "gray" colored XRGB-2 is the only Japanese upscan convertor to accept RGB signal from arcade PCB setup including support for the Seibu Kaihatsu PCBs (i.e. -- Raiden II, SP1 versions of Raiden Fighters series due to their odd 47 kHz output). It's output is stated at 640 x 480 resolution maximum and is recommended for CRT-type VGA PC monitor only. The only inputs are as follows: RCA Composite Video Input, S-Video Input and Japanese 21-pin RGB Input.

The "black" colored XRGB-2+ doesn't not have RGB support for arcade PCBs (you'd want an XRGB-2 for that job) but does have support for VGA (at 640 x 480 resolution) and XGA type of LCD based monitors (1024 x 768 upscaled resolution). The XRGB-2+ is a bit fuzzier when it comes to display the on-screen info (although the XRGB-2's on-screen info is sharper...this is really a non-issue though but is known for those who have both Microcom produced upscan convertors). The XRGB-2+ has a few more inputs to accept over the XRGB-2 model: RCA Composite Video Input, S-Video Input, Japanese 21-pin RGB Input, includes special Component Video to Japanese 21-pin RGB conversion cable and lastly, Japanese D-Terminal Input.

I'd have to say paying a mere $100.00 for a used XRGB-2 is an excellent deal...one that I'd personally not pass up for the chance to play my favorite arcade PCBs on a CRT-based SVGA PC monitor setup. The best for arcade PCB hobby is the XRGB-2 model that very seldomly appears for sale anymore and the upcoming XRGB-3 upscan convertor still won't have built-in arcade PCB support (but does include DVI {or Digital Visual Interface in short} output support which both the XRGB-2 & XRGB-2+ don't have). So yes, pick up that sexy "gray" XRGB-2 and enjoy it. ^_~

So I take it you won't want my XRGB2+, Richie? Because Imhotep wants it. Let me know, please.

So in other words, only the XRGB-2 is useful to an Acrade PCB gamer.

Thank you, PC Engine Fan X!, for your details explaination. :D Before that I thought all XRGB unit would works on PCBs.

Actually I nearly acquired an XRGB-2+ for PCBs gaming two years ago. Luckly I haven't.

PCEFX is mistaken. XRGB-2+ will run most PCBs just fine, but it does have problems with Seibu SPI stuff. It also lacks the the easy brightness switch as found on XRGB-2 (PCB - Console setting), though it is still adjustable in the onscreen menu. The main addition of '+' is the Component/D-Terminal input.

Oh, I see.

Dose it support Progressive scan Component input? If so it could be use to watch DVD on a PC monitor.
