What were the best snes games?

Post by Diabollokus »

Stupid question but, Playing alot of snes recently via emulation.

I know very little about the snes library, could anyone tell me some of the top games for the platform?

Already have chronotrigger, FF6(3), rtype 3, castlevania 4 and dracula X and finally contra 3. Thats all I can remember from youth that were pretty cool.

Any landmark title suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As for shmups: Macross Scrambled Eggs, erm, Valkyrie (possibly the best SNES shmup). Super Aleste isn't bad either, just a bit on the easy side.

Platformers/ jump and runs: I used to like the Super Star Wars games in the olden days and Indiana Jones Greatest Adventures is cool, too. Then there is Demon's Crest, a very good Capcom action game with RPG elements set in the demon realm of Ghost 'n Goblins. Highly recommended. Daze Before Christmas is also a nice platformer (very hard to find though, was only released for SNES in Germany). And you know Mario World and Donkey Kong Country, I guess.

Another must have title is Zelda - A Link to the Past.

For RPGs you should also check out FF 5 and Dragon Quest 5. They were never released in english, but there are translated roms out there.

If you're into platformers, you should definitely check out Violinist of Hameln and Umi Hara Kawa Se, two of the best 16-bit platformers IMO. Oh, and Doremi Fantasy is nice, too.

I wouldn't call Super Metroid an RPG; it's a more immersive, emotional, suggestive, poignant and singular experience than anything in that genre.

So, yeah, go and pick up Super Metroid! Assault Suits Valken, Sparkster and Axelay should be on your shopping list at some point, too.

Get playing Contra III and CV4, sir. Never mind "pretty cool", they're two of the system's finest titles, and put 95% of what's on offer today to shame. :D

F-Zero - racing

Super Mario World
Super Mario Allstars
F-Zero (I'm not a racing game fan but I enjoy this)

Macross Scrambled Eggs ? There's an MSX game called Scrambled Eggs which I consider to be one of the worst shmups I ever played. Does it have any relation?

For SNES games, IMO you should go for:

Out to Lunch - Cute Platform game
Cybernator (AKA Assault Suit Valken) - Platform shooter with mechs
F-Zero - Racing game
Super Punch-Out - Boxing game
Tetris Attack - Puzzle
Yoshi's Island - Platform
Pocky & Rocky 2 - Action/Shooter

And then there were a couple of Amiga conversions that are worthy a look, mainly Cannon Fodder and Chaos Engine (Which you may find with the name of "Soldiers of Fortune")

And for shmups, go for Super Aleste, R-Type 3 and Gokujyou Parodius.

If you get those games, you will have games that will last for a long time :)

If you like Zelda, be sure to check Enix's "Blazer trilogy": Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma.

Here's my choices.

R-Type 3 (Like it but kinda gives me a headache)
UN Squadron
Mega Man X
Starfox (Might be dated now but I have some heavy nostalgia for it)
F-Zero (Favorite game soundtrack ever)
Wild Guns (Like Sin & Punishment for the SNES)
Demon's Crest
Zelda ALTTP
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Tetris Attack
Kirby 3
Biometal (Not too bad, ships main shot seems a little underpowered. But the shield is fun to use. Turn the sound all the way down. Terrible music.)
Final Fight
Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts

Agreed. Super Metroid is the pinnacle of the series. Though Prime was good, it just doesn't get any better than Super Metroid. (fires up music dump in Audio Overload...ahhh, nostalgia...)

Other than that, everyone else's lists are looking good. :D

Didn't we already have a thread on this? Just curious, not trying to sound like a dick.

Do-Re-Mi Fantasy
Magical Pop'n
Goemon 1 and 4
Joe & Mac 2
Megaman X
Kirby 3
Hebereke No Popuun
Mario Kart
Yoshi's Island

Still haven't tried Bio Metal yet. Didn't the US version have messed up music or something? Which do I go for?

Japan Bio Metal - original soundtrack, maybe a bit harder (seemed that way, kind of hard to tell). BM U.S. soundtrack is ear murder.

No one ever played Out to Lunch ? I find that to be one of the most entertaining games on the system...

Except that...you know...it ISN'T an RPG.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

The point I was indirectly trying to make is that it has most of what people look for in that bloated genre in spades, and yet it's about 4 hours long and has no dialogue.

I mean no offence to any big RPG fans, you'll understand...

It could be argued either way, but it's way off topic for the thread.

Nah, that was a joke. It's called Macross Scrambled Vaklyrie. And it's very good. If you can find it it is a must buy. The post to which PaCrappa linked says this about it:
MACROSS: SCRAMBLED VALKYRIE (Zamuse) - The best side-scrolling shooter on the SFC, and one of the best ever created. Never released in the West (why?!), this is hardcore shoot ‘em up heaven. No wonder it now retails for between £150-£200!
The price quoted is baloney, though. I don't think it ever cost that much.

Has anybody said Wild Guns?

Pretty easy game, but just oozes with style. One of my top picks.

edit: Cheap as Hell on eBay too. I think I got mine (cart-only) for $2... so around $7 after shipping.

Tiny Toon Adventures was a very good platformer with creative stages.

Gradius 3 and Axelay if they have not already been mentioned.

You mean besides the topic creator saying he already had it?

Anyway, if we're talking JP games as well, Der Langrisser and the 3 Fire Emblems are tops among SRPGs for the system.
