GC Chaos Field

Post by Cthulhu »

Anyone get it? I'm curious, but since I already have the DC version... they'd have to add quite a bit of stuff to make me buy it again.

I'm curious too, esp. since I held out getting the DC version to see what this thing had. Is it worth buying a Freeloader solely for? Or is it still coming out for the PS2?

NCSX said something in the lines of "we're looking forward to the superplay DVD that's bound to ship together with the PS2 release" about Chaos Field, which is probably where the rumour for PS2 version started. Doesn't look like it's gonna happen.

After 15 minutes play, quick list, DC>>GC.

+added game save for hi-score table :o
+less or eliminated slowdown with lock-on's
+added 'original' mode w/revised bullet pattern and regular enemy (didn't notice any drastic change myself)

-VGA removed (no 480p progressive scan option) :x

Nah, I meant "comparision" or "change". Sorry for the ambiguity. I use ">>" for different meanings.

Yeah, I was confused too. > usually means greater than, and >> could even imply that the DC version was so much better than the GC version that the GC version was completely moot. Not to be a grammar nazi or anything, just gotta be careful with shorthand.

Another '+' I didn't mention before: 'original' mode adds an arranged and slightly remixed OST.

Rocking my socks already.Loving the soundtrack.I can't understand people are complaining about the graphics they look fine to me.No Ikaruga but hey which shooter is?.Best box art of the last two years (since ddpachi:ajj).
I'm not fully game with the play sysytem as of yet but dang it 's fun.

The bonus cd rocks to some ambient versions of classic songs

IGN posted their impressions of Chaos Field at http://cube.ign.com/articles/594/594035 ... ?fromint=1 . They are mostly good, but it seems like they didn't try all the modes. Aslo, there is some misinformation in the article about Castle Shikigami and Castle Shikigami 2. The article actually says that Castle Shikigami 1 was on Xbox first and that Castle Shikigami 2 was released on GCN first, despite them both being arcade ports. I don't think the Xbox Castle Shikigami 1 was the first home version (not completely sure) and the DC version of Shikigami 2 was the first home version of that game. The writer of the article seems to know absoultely nothing about the US PS2 versions of Shikigami 1 or 2 too. I recommend talking this article with a grain of salt.

Yeah, ironically enough, IGN is actually correct in their home release info. The Xbox version of Shikigami no Shiro was actually first. And the Gamecube version of Shikigami no Shiro 2 was also the first, followed by the PS2 version, and then the DC version even though the arcade game ran on Naomi hardware. Of course, you gotta take IGN's opinions opinions with a huge grain of salt regardless.

oh ok. That is surprising. I really need to check the dates on those games. Is IGN correct in their actual game info? From what I heard, there's a new mode that isn't just the bosses and the graphics description sounds very innaccurate from what I have seen in videos.

Well, I finally got this today, and have put in a little time on it. I can only second what oxtsu and highlandcattle have already said. I must say that the elimination of most of the non-"lock-on" slowdown makes this play a lot better. But although I'm playing this in component, it's still hard on my eyes. I guess I'm too used to seeing this game in true VGA. That and I'm missing my DC stick. The hori digital pad is decent, but I'm just not used to it yet.

Let's just say that for those who've tried the DC rev and liked it, there's a lot to like here. For those that tried it and didn't like it, I don't think it will change your mind.

Hi, some quick questions for those who already own this game:

1) Is it Freeloader friendly?
2) Saves properly to the same memory card as US saves?

There was just some talk on another thread that you can't mix US/JPN game saves on a single memory card, as the Cube thinks there's something wrong with it and formats it every time.

This true for modded cubes but not for those who use free loader. It creates it's own kind of saves

Well, that would explain why my Freeloader-using friends don't seem to have a problem using the same memory card for Naruto and Melee.

im using a freeloader too, having a pal gamecube all japanese, pal and us game saves are mixed up on two memory cards, one pal one japanese.
NEVER HAD PROBLEMS.

but after starting chaos field it asks something in japanese i couldn't read.
accepting it it asked again, after accepting that, i found out that it did format one of my memory cards, luckily there wasn't much saves on it.
but the thing is that chaos field formats the card but still cant save on it.

anyone having that problem?
as i said i have lots of jp, us and pal games and had never problems with savegame.

Excellent, I think I'll be picking this up. I had the chance to try the DC version, and while the slowdown and the wait from "press start" to the beginning of the first level was a bit much, it's much better than I expected. The lockon use and the bullet sponges make really interesting scoring mechanisms, the game looks pretty nice to me, and the music is great!

Has anything been cleaned up in the GC version besides slowdown?

Correct. I own Naruto: GNT3 and it saves alongside my US games with no issues. However, I heard there are a few rare games that cause problems, which is why I asked about Chaos Field.

I heard a similar story on GameFAQs.com. Is there anything besides High-scores that requires saving?

Is your Cube modded? Reports from the NTSC-UK forum say it won't save when booted with a Freeloader.
