I need a new 2d fighter

Post by JigsawMan »

OK, I am itching to buy one of the following:

Spectral vs Generation
Neo Geo Battle Coliseum
Samurai Spirits: Tenkaichi Kenkakuten

Any thoughts on which one I should get for the PS2?

Personally I'd opt for NGBC or Tenkaichi, with a slight preference towards NGBC.

The SS games are an acquired taste. Slower and more strategic when compared to the snappier KOF-based titles. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either of the 3, it just depends on which play style you prefer.

Don't buy SVG unless you REALLY like the Ideaf universe; IGS isn't too good on applying the polish yet.

NBC has slow loading times between matches and it plays with a very fast pace.

Tenka has every NeoGeo SS character but it's a lot slower than the other 2 games you mentioned.

Topics of this sort are impossible to respond to since who knows what your tastes are, but I'd suggest NBC. It's a hell of a lot more playable than that SVC Chaos garbage.

KOF Neowave is out for $20 on Xbox.

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology is out in the summer on PS2.

yeah, sorry I was a bit rushed when I started the topic as I was in work. I'm more of a Capcom fanboy than anything else. With Capcom vs SNK 2 on the Dreamcast being my all time favorite 2d fighter. I already own every Street Fighter game from the Saturn through dreamcast and PS2 along with most SNK fighters too. Those were the days when i had spare money - now I have to choose just one!

I'm leaning towards NBC at the moemnt, only thing that puts me off is the reported long load times and using HDloader just seems like cheating - I just like putting the disc in every time I play...

Awesome, I'm also a huge SF fan, esp. oldschool SFII. Tenka doesn't really play like anything Capcom-ish though; it's distinctively SNK in feel. SVG feels more like a weakly put-together Guilty Gear clone. NBC is a fast-paced modern SNK title that's quite combo-centric (but along with the obligatory poking that KOF is famed for), not unlike SFA in pace.

NBC's load times are definitely a pain though at between 10-15 seconds.

I've heard about this. Is it before the fight starts, or between each round?
I really hope it's before, can't stand long loads between rounds.

There are no rounds, actually. It's tag-team play a la KOF2003 (or Capcom's Vs. games) with 2 characters. The only load time is in-between matches. Despite damage recovery for your inactive partner, matches do tend to be fairly short since the timer counts down fairly rapidly (unless you turn it off).

Ironically, there's almost no load time playing in survival mode.

I'm going to pick up KOF Neowave before too long- $20 is unbeatable.

KOF-XI for the import PS2 also sounds interesting with the extras they've put in (Robert and Mai are back- yes.). I'll most likely be using a New Faces "Edit" team of Oswald (the "Joker" DM where the opponent is hit with a full 52-card deck is awesome), Elizabeth, and Momoko after I get this.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

@ Ganelon: Well then it's not as bad as I thought, still I guess I can still see why people would get pissed at the long ass load times.

I passed on NW since I like 2K2 better. I'm really looking forward to playing KOF XI and KOF Orochi Collection though, I should have this soon.

Yeah, Melty Blood will be a hit for people who like to do combos all day.

And I was so hyped up about Neowave (and I still enjoy Neowave with its slower poking pace better than KOF2003) that I got the JP PS2 version awhile ago. Since it has Angel and May Lee while the US Xbox version doesn't, I guess I made a lucky decision. Also waiting for Orochi Collection to arrive this week.

I'd say go with SS Tenka. I don't find the gameplay at all slow, in fact it's far more combo oriented than past SS games (including SS4). The ability to choose from six different gameplay styles is pretty sweet, too.

NGBC is fun, but I'd avoid it for PS2 because the loading times are really long (like 20 seconds per match).

I'd never heard of melty blood till SAM mentioned it just there. The official site looks nice but doesn't give much away.

Anyone shed any extra light on what it's like?

Loading times on NGBC are only really and issue in the orignal arcade mode. Play the ps2 port exclusive survival mode (which you'll need to play to unlock the hidden characters anyway) and load times are no longer a huge problem. I think they did a lazy port of the orignal arcade mode but the Vs and Survival modes are very well done.

I heard there were loads in Neowave (Xbox, US) between matches, meaning the music resets each time...that's what killed me in the Saturn KOF ports. I remember purposely not fighting in '96 just to hear all the wonderful music ('specially AOF stage).

That's exactly what I did!! During the AOF and Iori stage I'd make the fight last as long as possible to hear the music. Eventually I gave in to the long load times between rounds, hardly played the saturn ports after that. Main reason why I'm so looking forward to getting the Orochi Collection.

Right on bro, after that I listened to the game on my CD player, but it just wasn't the same without all the SNK goodness in front of my eyes.
Things were pretty spot-on but, damn, that loading.

It's an arcade port of the PC title which was originally released as a doujin class game(demo here). Melty Blood is actually an offical spinoff of a hentai visual novel collaborated with the original creators since they have the visual novel's character designer making the portraits for this title. Melty Blood does not contain any nudity or sex whatsoever, but has super-high production values (for a doujin title at least) and a game system, that if it was only tweaked JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE, would've made it a very good game instead of a mediocre one.

Last time I played it, it felt like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on console-exclusive fastest game speed with some elements borrowed from Guilty Gear XX, but was never implemented correctly.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Tenka over the other two. Tenka really is the best 2D fighter to come along in a while.

Tenka just doesn't feel new to me. NGBC seems to be one of a few Playmore games that they havn't given the "lazy treatment".

Eternal Fighter Zero is better suited for that. It seems to work fine on computers that were made in 1998-99, I think.

Actually, you can download some matches of Tenka and NGBC here, and get a good feel for each game. They don't have any SvG matches though because no one plays it.

I thought the new sprites in Tenka were actually pretty damn good for a Playmore game, especially Sieger's.
