Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Ok i have played both, and own Sol Feace for sega cd, my question is what's up with having two names for the same game?

No meaning. Just to make the two versions distinguishable. I think it's a so-so shmup.

I really like it, but there's not much to say since it's so simple... Tried the X68000 version yet?

The Sega CD version came out as a pack-in originally here in the States. I think it was sold separately in Japan.

The cart version (Sol Deace) was in essence the same game, but without the CD music and cut scenes. Same thing happened with Ernest Evans, except we never got the CD version of that here in the States.

In Japan Sol-Feace and Earnest Evans were only released on CD. The only place where cart versions exist is North America.

I think the game isn't bad, but nothing great either. The music was pretty rockin' though.

It's one of my favorites, mostly because of the soundtrack and the cool first stage. I don't believe I've ever played past the third stage, sadly enough. But I'm working on it.

Does the CD version mainly have the same songs, just of a much better quality since they are on CD/ I always thought Sol-Deace (cart version) had some pretty rocking tunes to be honest, especially the 1st and 2nd stage boss fights.

Yes clarity is much better on sol feace. Some instruments have slightly different volumes. Like the clap thing in level one. I noticed it when you fight the semi large enemy with the spinning block arms.

I guess they thought for the US release it sounded too much like Sol Feces, and then maybe they forgot to change it again for the CD version ;)

no idea :D

I bought it for PSX jap as soon as it came out (and forked a bloody lot too) but got kinda disappointed. The main sprite is great, the background somewhat nice, the stages are short and a bit pointless, but the rendering is so 1985 and it ruined the entire game. Rendering should be banned from the videogame industry. It coats every surface with unnatural light and unreal volumes.
Good thing that with the 3D era it doesn't make much sense anymore, but still it is used with disgusting results (Altered Beast Advance anyone?)
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Are you sure you are talking about Sol Feace?

So this begs the question, then. What is a "Sol Feace?" Or a "Deace" for that matter?

It was the name of some scientist if I remember correctly. I think the Japanese version might have a better introduction movie than the us for Sol Feace.

Better quality (plus some nice ambience effects have been added), yes, but the production is cheezy enough for me to like the X68000 (tops, both graphically and audio-wise) and MD versions a lot more.

Either way I think it's a decent game, nowhere near as crappy as many other Wolf Team games were.

Well, Wolf Team's true passion were the RPG's after all (the ones we never got)...

After all, when they split up, half of them formed Tri-Ace, and the other guys work on the Tales games for Namco.

Yeah they did some freaking bad stuff, honestly (Earnest Evans, Final Zone Senki Axis, Annet Futabi etc). Arcus Odyssey and Granada are great though...

Wolfteams best stuff was their PC98 games in my opinion. Hiouden 1 and 2, the Tenbu games and especialy Tokyo Twilight Busters are all fantastic games.

I think El Viento was Wolfteam's best game. The rest was pretty average stuff. Gotta give them credit for supporting the Mega CD as much as they did though.

I actually like Earnest Evans. It's weird, once you get into the vibe of the game, and realise how you should and shouldn't play, it becomes enjoyable.

Sol Feces on X68000 is sharp, pun intended.

If you have a Sega CD, then Sol-Feace is the way to go. It can be had for next to nothing most of the time. I actually just played this last night & got further than I ever had (level 4 I think) - it's a fairly frustrating game (cheap hits sometimes), but as mentioned above it does have cool music.

AHh… Sol Feace!

Those were the 1st CD cut-scenes I had ever witnessed back in 1991 and what a visual shock that was!

I still think they're awesome to this very day.

The CD audio in the JPN version also contains some of the back ground sound effects, making the US & EURO the "cleaner" versions, especially if CD audio is the most important factor in your book, but the Japanese CD cover is the best by far!

Ture on the JPN version sound effects. My god the US cover art was horrible (the Japanese and European cover-art was the same, luckly bastards). :P

As odd as this may sound, I liked the cart version more. Yes, Sol-Feace had the snazzy opening and tunes, but there's one thing it didn't have... a decent ending. It came and went so fast, that it may as well have just gone straight to the credits. Sol-Deace had all the graphics, rotation and such, and though it did loose out with the music (though it wasn't bad on the Genesis), it had a much better ending with animation, a story (though oddly worded) and a rather neat trick with the ending credits.

If you can find both, get both. Neither is expensive, and while the music on one may be a tempting siren call, the ending on the other will make the trip more worth while.

I actually prefer the music in the cartridge version. It possibly has a lot to do with the fact that it's the one I've been playing, and there's no doubt that the CD version has higher quality music, but I think the synths used in the cartridge version give it a much jazzier, more stylish vibe.
