R-9a "Arrowhead" resin kit

Arrived in the mail from HobbyFan today

I'll post an update when I get chance to put this thing together. Amusingly, it's the exact same size as my scratch-built one. No instructions though. The canopy, force-orb and bits are all transparent which is a neat-o effect.

I couldn't resist grabbing this as soon as I saw it on HobbyFan. Does anyone else have one? Any modelling tips?

What comapny makes the model kit? I wonder if I can find this in my local hobby shop.........

And you say no instructions? What's that paper right next to it in the picture though? Can a beginner like myself handle something like this?

what do you use to paint the cockpit and orb.... stained glass spraypaint?......that stuff works well

how much are those things.. ?... Ha.. its funny looking at the picture of the completed model, really makes you think how it would be impossible to see WTF you were shooting at, rendering the cockpit being transparent, kinda pointless.. But of course we can just imagine something lik multiple screens to in cockpit to hit enemies ^_^ lol

Gorgeous Kit!! Here are some tips..

Before you start, scrub the HELL out of it with soft scrub cleanser in warm water. You have to get the mold release off, if you don't the primer and paint won't stick. Next..I recommend Gunze Sangyo Mr. Resin Primer, this is almost a must as I find most paints peel, and won't stick if you don't use a good resin primer. As for paint, I would stick with Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color paints if airbrushing. They are probably the best paints out there for modeling. Some people will talk up Tamiya Acrylics..but I have always had best results with Mr. Color. The only downside, you can only get it from japan because apparently the lacquer base is very hazardous. Use some Mr. Thinner, and some Mr. Retarder to keep the paint from drying too quickly. For the cockpit, if you want a good clear color..use Mr. Color Clear Blue..and then some Mr. Super Clear on top of it to seal it and give it a bit of shine.

For the building side..GET GOOD PINS! Good pins for pinning parts is a must. Also..use some Mr. Cement..or Tamiya Cement..the best there is. For any sanding or seem filling..stick with Tamiya putty and sanding films..most of all patience is key.

The manufacturer is 13B/Specter's, the same guys who made that excellent Ikaruga resin.
It looks like they're still in stock at HobbyFan but I have no idea whether you would find these in the shops. I live in the UK so it was a case of buy it now - or never see one on sale again.

And yeah, kits like this are a step up from the general Airfix type stuff. All the parts have chunks of flash (extra chunks of resin left over from moulding) that need to be cut off and filed away without ruining the rest of the model. They need to be pinned (handily the model has all the holes for pinning pre-drilled) and super-glued. More often than not, the parts don't fit together anyway, and the gaps have to be filled in with modeller's putty. Non of this should be a real problem though as long as you have the right tools.

There are no instuctions though. You just get a photo for colour reference and a badly photocopied sheet that says 'blast off and strike the evil Bydo Empire' on it.

That kit looks awesome! It makes me want to try and get one of those and put one togeather. I will probably suck at it, though.

I just got my kit in today (seems they are in stock at Hobbyfan still), and it's really deatailed and quite beautiful. The plastic is very thick and sturdy (I'm used to the crappy thin stuff from Ertil type car models). I'm not going to attempt putting it together since there are lots of pieces and no instructions........I emailed HS about carrying the Ikaruga kit too.........man does Spectre do some nice stuff....

I was disappointed the box didn't have any R-Type artwork on it either. Just a plain white box............

Here's what Hobbyfan had to say about the lack of instructions and then the Iky model:

"We are sorry to tell. According to our supplier. The sculptor has never include one even for the master kit purchase from Japan.
For help. We have many detail photo from our website. You can use that as assembly reference. Will take a while to figure out. But that is the only type of help we can offer for the time being.

Yes. We know new about the Ikaruga fighter. That is a beautiful piece. But this time, the kit is complete sold out before our supplier can get a hand to it.
Hope they will release it on the next coming convention even."

Wow, the Spectre 13 kits sell out pretty quick then........I wonder if it's a "doujin" model maker.........

After ordering 'bout half a year ago at Hobbyfan, I got an email today stating that my pre-painted R9 kit is about to be dispatched. I'm really looking forward to it, especially if the paint job can reach yours in any aspect.
