Shooters where you can bounce off things?

Post by Ed Oscuro »

I can think of 1941: Counter Attack (Capcom), which isn't bouncing off things so much as it is turning your plane into a cartwheel of death. It's a fun little gameplay enhancement, and not terribly more clumsy than Chelnov's spinning jump to hit enemies with (it's just a bit slow).

FixEight (Toaplan) comes to mind, but that game doesn't automatically scroll. During some sequences you'll hop onto a Star Wars scout speeder ripoff thing and zip along.

Honorable mention (but way out there): the automatic scrolling sections of Shinobi 3.

I'm terrible about the new games. :( thanks for the heads-up on that one. Was thinking about checking it out anyway, actually.

All the Psikyo games have the 'power down' feature, pretty much.

yes, but in zero gunner 2 you don't power down, you bounce (or kill if its a popcorn). either way you inflict damage though right?

On the ZG2 thing, is that only if you hit the enemy with the helicopter blades, or is any part of the craft OK? I can't recall.

yup, one of the reasons why i don't like those things...

as far as ZG2 bouncing. small enemies are killed instantly, allowing you to pass by, larger ones are the ones that actually make you bounce.

plus i can't believe this thread... i say after my third post.

Bouncing = Life

Kinda disappointed that only ZG2 and power down games are being mentioned. I mean actually bounce off with no repercussions, naturally! :D

Mahou Daisakusen (that series) actually did come to mind earlier, but it was a wild guess - I haven't played enough of it to know that you can actually bounce off enemies (i.e. no more than a few seconds at once)

Serious. Did not know.

Don't you eventually blow up if you bounce too much though?

Oh, and your helicoper's propeller is that one that inflicts the damage in that game, so if you bounce off them, you've already had your propeller hitting them for those few scant milliseconds (I believe your propeller's graphic changes intensity slighty when you're damaging something with it). Those things must be made out of some sort of indestructable material of they can cut through things tougher than titanium and still maintain their shape.

In Vasara 1 and 2 you can bounce off enemies like a pinball.

I much prefer bouncing off enemies to stupid cheap games that throw a screen full of mulkti-hit kamikaze enemies that take you out in a frustrating death.

Border Down - you can scratch the ship on the terrain (but not enemies) for a few moments before going boom.

In Space Megaforce/Super Aleste walls don't hurt you at all, though crashing into enemies is not recommended, heh.

Air Buster / Aero Blasters has a neat powerup you can pick up which adds little fins to the front of your ship, allowing you to gently bounce and scrape tunnel walls like a jetski.

I think he means that he'd rather have at least SOME chance of surviving after being bumped by an enemy (sometimes you'll get bumped into a bullet and die anyway, but not always) rather than just being vaporized instantly.

In any event, I'd hardly call the Vasaras "pinball-ish" myself, seeing as most enemies should be meeting their makers (programmers?) before they get close enough to you to bump you anyways, heh heh.

Cool gameplay mechanic, maddeningly frustrating stages w/o it
