San Francisco's Retro Stores??

Post by ave »

I'm going to have a little stay in San Francisco this summer and I would like to know if anybody who lives in SF can tell me about some good Retro Gameshops?
I'm especially interested in every japanese game (famicom - ps2) or if not available also in every other OLD game :)

Is there any shop in midtown?

IlMrm can confirm, but I don't think there are any in SF. If you head South of San Francisco, into Burlingame, there is a "Network Video" store that has lots of imports, not sure about retro/classics though, probably all recent PS2/GC/Xbox.

I went to Networks last Saturday as a matter of fact, and lo and behold there was baby Reko from the LE, so I picked it up for 7.99. :)
Also picked up a Rei Ayanami wallscroll where she's holding the Lance of Longinus, with the moon in the background. Sweet.

The shmups I remember they have there:

Psyvariar something - PS2
Radirgy
Chaos Field - DC
Chaos Field - GC - J
Chaos Field - PS2
Ibara
Giga Wing Generation - Taito Best
Giga Wing Generation regular
Trizeal
Sengoku Cannon
Homura
Shikigami No Shiro 2 - J-PS2
I think Star Soldier for the GC-J

They have NES/SNES stuff by the entrance near the anime/game soundtracks. They also have Saturn, DC, Genesis, and some Super Famicom games too. But all those Eva figures got me drooling.

In terms of shops in SF I am afraid I don't know of any. There's a Game Crazy at Serramonte shopping center, with some SNES/NES games.

Edit - I went to Networks again today and updated info.

Yeah, there are no import or retro shops in the San Francisco city itself I'm afraid.

But Network video is indeed well worth a visit. It's a great shop, although their stock varies quite a lot I find, sometimes they have some really nice stuff and other times I leave empty handed and disappointed.

The best shop in the area for older stuff is 4jays (www.4jays.net) but it's a bit of a drive - it's about an hour from San Francisco - in Antioch, on W.4th St. It's a small shop but they have a very good selection of US retro systems and games (no imports though, except maybe a few PCE titles), the place is absolutely packed full of stock, I usually leave with a good amount of stuff when I go there.

There's also a used games store in Alameda, the Alameda Game Exchange, on Park St. They had some old US systems and games the last time I went there, including quite a fair amount of 2600 games, but the condition of most of the stock was not good. They had a completely broken Vectrex system for sale, and a Lynx that also refused to power up, for example.

Hope that halps.

There's one other retro shop I know....it's called "The Annex" in downtown Redwood City on El Camino. It's next door to the Record Man and only a couple blocks away from the train station. It's about 20-30min from the city. The guy there is kind of a jerk though.... :/

Thx so far :)

And, addiotionally, any recommendations for DVD shops in the city (civic centre, centre in general) out there? I'm esspecially lookin for LEs like the Scarface Gift Box Set or the Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Ed.

I found a shop with DVDs like those in New York, it was equipped from bottom to top with DVDs, CDs, (nextgen) Games and Vinyl. Maybe any equivalent in SF? 8)

There's a Virgin Megastore on Stockton Street and Market Street, near Union Square, whcih is a major tourist area. A little Southwest starting from 6th Street and Market Street down to around 9th and Market is a really high crimed area. Civic Center is around 9th and Market. Not many DVD stores there, except adult videos. You might also try Amoeba Records on Haight near Ashbury. Lots of stuff there. For DVDs, I go to Best Buy, a big electronic chain store.

Thx. I marked the 2 stores on my map 8)

Virgin Megastore always sounds good. There was one in Dublin and they had DVDs... wow.

Definitely go to Amoeba Records in San Francisco. That's where I went when I was there. By far the best record store I have ever been to. They have a huge selection (the place is a big as a fucking airplane hangar!), and lots of used stuff for a great price. Huge selection of US and Import DVDs as well.
