Dogyuun (Toaplan 1992) Home port...

Post by ST Dragon »

Has Dogyuun by Toaplan 1992 (Arcade) been ported to any home console system?

I tried it on Mame and I noticed that sound is not emulated, which is a pity as it's great shooter.

If it is I would like to try it with sound.

I don't think it was ported. I love Toaplan and have been trying to hunt down console ports of all their shooters and have not seen Dogyuun mentioned as being ported anywhere.

I've been playing it a bit in MAME while having the OST CD on in the background, It's a really cool game.

I own the PCB and while it doesn't receive the attention it deserves its a solid game thats not as quick to hand your ass to you like some other Toaplan shmups. It can be picked up relatively cheap too.

Ha! Really got my hopes up when I saw the title of this thread. Why won't hamster put it out instead of all that other crap?

So What is the arcade music of dogyuun like and is the OST remixed?

Another nice Toaplan shooter that is misiing sound in MAME, is Vimana, and so is Banprestos's Macross SDF :(

By the way, I just noticed that the sound of Outzone (Very nice 8-Way shooter) has been emulated in MAME!

Hmm, crap?

Check out Pa's post for more or less my thoughts. Didn't I give you Magical Drop 2 at one point?

For Toaplan related stuff I'd say Dangun Feveron takes precedence over everything (except getting that proto released, at least in rom form, what's the name again?) I'll play Twin Hawk, Tiger Heli, or Wardner in the meantime.

Sounds much like most Toaplan soundtracks, I think only the main theme is arranged. Simple and catchy composition (keyword: octave bass:)) with chunky oldschool FM production. Decent enough.

Data East? Hamster? I'm too drunk to understand right now (jesus, when did I become a complete lush? -- definitely hasn't helped my nonexistant high scores.) I just meant that while Hamster has been putting out a lot of old arcade games (godblessum), there are still some real gems like this one that no one has caught.

Toaplan as usual is still getting the shaft (far more so than Cave). Way too much of their catalogue has never been available in console form, or when it has, the console hasn't been capable of doing justice to the port. I still want Toaplan shooting volume 2 and 3 (and 4?)

Don't know how Dangun Feveron came in there, though I'll give it credit for being one of the more uncavelike cave games. Not one of my favorites by any means.

What the hell does this have to do with Magic Drop 2? (I guess I wasn't aware of the Hamster - Data East tie in) Jesus, why don't you leave us drunks alone!

It got a conversion for the FM Towns Marty (hope I have the name right there); but c'mon. The games from this later period of Toaplan really deserve a modern conversion w/ tate. As much as I love the Genny for having all the toaplan ports, I'd give my left... er I'd give a lot of money to see those games have decent, tate-able versions on say, a 32 bit console or something.

Toaplan Shooting Volume 2 is Batsugun+Batsugun Special Version on Saturn. But yeah, I´d buy any console that gets a Volume 3 or even more. But a Dangun Feveron port would be in the same league... did my hopes carry me away, or has Hamster actually announced to port that game?

Thing about Truxton and Dogyuun is that they feel very old now to me at least. I don't think they are well known enough for a retro release and they are too old school for many peoples tastes.

Eh? That's a weird statement. Raiden is more old-school than Dogyuun (being more of a Twin Cobras homage), but this didn't stop Hamster from putting it out, nor people all over the world from enjoying it.

As far as Truxton--I was specifically referring to Truxton 2 which is very different than its predecessor and feels quite a bit more modern (far closer to Batsugun in my mind than the classics like Fire Shark and Twin Cobras.)

Still, this idea that some games are too old school strikes me as odd when you look at the games coming out now. Anyway, Dogyuun and Truxton 2 are from the early 90's--the peak of Shmupdom. how can they be too old?

I agree with CMoon.
Truxton and Dogyuun are not any worse or more old-school than these:

Grid Seeker: Project Storm Hammer
Insector X
Majestic 12
Syvalion

But Taito is still including them in their 2nd TAITO collection for the Ps-2/X-Box & PC.

Truxton 2 is quite superior to the 1st game and it’s a pity in never saw a home console port as Truxton did on the MD & PCE.

except for "Fixeight" , every Toaplan games are well worth a re-release by hamster on PS2 IMO. They just rock.

Damn. I did not know Tatsujin 2 was old enough to coincide with FM Towns Marty's console life  Me playing that is about as likely as my trans-national, nomatic ass getting a Jamma Cab; not gonna happen soon. Damn.

I agree, they should all get ports (though I don't care much for the Mahjong games and that one Quiz title).

Fixeight is decent on its own, but it seems lackluster compared to its prequel.

I love toaplan. I love Truxton 2. I'm still not going to buy some weird ancient computer system to play a sub-par port of it. *sighs*

Going OT, but I haven't tried FM Towns through emulation at all. Wonder if there's anything else worthwhile that makes it worth getting.

I'd like it as much as anyone if more of their games got great ports like Toaplan Shooting Battle (w/arrange soundtrack, etc) but I'm sure almost any Toaplan PCB can't be worth more than $100. Better to play them on a cab than in MAME, esp. without any sound emulation.

There's a Toaplan Shooting Volume 2? Even moreso, if it does exist why would anyone bother buying standalone Batsugun if there's a pack which includes both version. I hope this is just in theory...

He means the standard Batsugun Saturn release IS volume 2.

Why anyone buys Batsugun on PCB is beyond me...

it mentions "Toaplan Legendary Series" in the intro, just like Toaplan Shooting Volume 1 does, and is published by Banpresto as well. So they WERE probably intending to do more of these collections, but they didn´t sell enough, so the plan was canned.

People with nothing but a cab to play on who don´t want to fiddle with modding the Saturn output, but still... you get half the game for twice the price. Ok, the Saturn has loading times, but those in Batsugun are pretty short.

So, what was that talk about Dangun Feveron?

Eww, special version.

No port planned as of now that we know of, unfortunately. Just wishful thinking/needless speculation. Actually I don't think the board's over $200 so it's not a huge problem.

Actually a very Toaplan-ish game, the retro theme is due to it being a celebration of Toaplan's 10th (?) anniversary. Lots of aimed shots etc. Adds point blanking (w/secondary shot, just like with missiles in Raiden 2/DX) and the discomen element. I like both these so the game gets a thumbs up from yours truly. I'll get around to clearing it someday.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By the way, we need more competition in the Kyuktoku Tiger/Tiger Heli thread. Mainly for TH.
