Hotdog Storm

Post by FRO »

Does anyone here actually like this game? I credit-fed through it on MAME just now & just can't believe anyone would justify spending money on it in an arcade. It has to be the hardest, most frustrating "twitch" shmup I've ever played. Has anyone done a 1CC on this beast?

I like it. Oldschool shooter running on Cave hardware = fun, imo

Submit a score if you want... it'll motivate me to play it again (and try for that elusive 1CC!)

It just seems too daunting a task for me. There are bullet patterns faster than anything Psykio does in their twitch/manic combo style, & even the slower bullets are very targeted. The other REALLY bothersome thing is that most of the larger enemies take WAY too many shots to take down based on the speed with which other enemies swarm the screen & spray you down. Especially the last boss - he's a complete monster, with his nigh-dodgeable bullet sprays, uber-fast wave shot, & the fact that there are at least 4 "phases" of attack that he has. I mean, I've never seen past level 3 of the forward shot, & level 2 of any of the special/side weapons.

Would those of you who like it regard it more as a memorizer, or a "flail the joystick till your hand falls off" kinda game? I see elements of memorization everywhere (enemy patterns, the way bullets spray, etc.), but I am having a hard time taking it all in. Maybe it's because everything is coming in so fast...

Oddly enough, I was playing it the other day and was thinking to myself that it shouldn't take that much work to clear. Other than the low ship speed and overall bland weapons, I don't have much to complain about.

Okay, so Air Gallet is also MUCHO frustration - not sure how one might 1CC that beast as well.

OT: Heh, Air Gallet...another Joker Jun classic! I wish he would get back into shmups!

On Topic: From what little I have played, I liked it, but then I haven't been very deep into the game, so I may give it a go and try to see what you are talking about.

Raiden 2 on full rank/maxed-out weapons is quite a bastard as well. x_x

I never really found it too hard :?

Its a bastardisation of shienryu and raiden, (two of my fav's) so i felt quite at home when playing it, and it was one of the first games that i played religously when i first started getting to mame aroun the .36b15 builds.

I like the game (hotdog storm). It's got cool explosions, neat enemies, cool bomb.
Definitely old school, with a jerky pace, but I find it real fun to try and max out your weapons- once you do, you are very powerful and the pace really picks up.

I'll have to give both a try in MAME; thanks for the info on these two shmups everyone! :D I wouldn't know about even half the shmups that are out there if it wasn't for this site.

Yeah, Raiden 2 (as experienced on Raiden Project) w/ the difficulty set up to General is an absolute firestorm. Hard as nails - can't even crack the 1st level...

Okay, so maybe I'm in the minority here, but I thought (from offhand posts I've seen) that there are those on this forum that don't particularly care for this game & might have championed my cause. Oh well, you can't win them all!

I heart Hotdog Storm. I was bored with it at first, but I like the bullet speed and the game REALLY grew on me. I now own the PCB and my friends and I all go at it back and forth for high scores while having a few (too many) beers.
