SHMUPS for circa 1998 era PC?
I'm trying to combine two hobbies I enjoy atm, using vintage computers and playing vertical SHMUPS with space ships (I'm not as interested in shmups featuring humans, like Touhou, or horizontal shmups). I'm trying to run the games on a Pentium II 266mhz Windows 98/dos machine from 1998 with DirectX 6 compatible 3D card. Here's what I have already, and looking for more suggestions as I'm not acquainted with Japanese doujin shmups of this era and it seems hard to find out what exists beyond super popular stuff like Touhou.
DOS
-Overkill
-Major Stryker
-Baryon
-Raiden 1
-Raptor
-Flying Tigers 1 + 2
-Tyrian
-Fire Crow
Windows 9X
-Cho Ren Sha 68K
-Raiden II
-Layer Section
-Idinaloq
-Demonstar + Demonstar Special Missions 1+2
-Viewpoint Windows 95 port (actually haven't been able to get this to run, but someone found a Korean PC port of Viewpoint in recent years)
Emulation
-Sega Genesis SHMUPs via Gens emulator
-NeoGeo shmups via NeorageX
Questions:
-Might there be a PGM emulator that could run on hardware this low? I'm sure there are early versions of MAME that could run on this machine, though I think PGM emulation and emulation for sound in Toplan games didn't exist in Mame until well into the 2000s when CPUs were much faster than Pentium II era.
-Are there other Win9x era ports of Japanese arcade shmups other than Raiden II and Layer Section? Those are great ports, though my research suggests that PC gaming was not very popular at that time in Japan and there are not so many arcade ports to PC accordingly.

I know very little about this topic, but I do have a copy of Darius Gaiden for Windows, in addition to Layer Section which you already have.

Darius Gaiden was released for Win95 back in the day you might recall through Cyber Front in the USA.

Yep, Taito developed PC ports for Raystorm, Raycrisis & G-Darius which were all published by Cyber Front. Gradius Deluxe Pack also got a Windows 95 release.dark wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2026 7:58 pm

Taito did not develop those, though. They just licensed them to Cyber Front.

Re: SHMUPS for circa 1998 era PC?
I got around to installing layer section last night after making this topic and I was surprised to find that it may be speed sensitive to the CPU! The game was running twice as fast as it should, it was very difficult to play accordingly (enemies and their bullets moving on fast forward!) and there appeared to be no speed settings in the options menu. I guess I won't be playing this one much

Re: SHMUPS for circa 1998 era PC?
Ooh cool suggestions. A few of those look like early 2000s games so hopefully they don't require winxp or beafier hardware. I'll give them a shot!
Another shmup I forgot to mention that works well it's The Reap. It's a bit reminiscent of Viewpoint with the isometric style.
I love the artwork in Agony, but it won't run natively on this dos/win PC. But maybe it could through an emulator

Shooting Game Kari is a freeware doujin from 1997, so contemporary with the hardware you’re working with. Decently challenging (for me anyway) with a nice OST. It’s also free on Steam if you want to see if it’s something you’d like to put the effort into.

Shooting Game Kari was made and it's using with the DoGA CG Application made for Retro Aspect anime mecha styled 1990s.
The same game graphics like GwangeDash made up DoGA CG modeler and visually same as Rodney Smith, Who were did the graphics in DemonStar Secret Missions 1 and 2, Unfinished game sequel DemonStar 2 and Secret Missions 3

Whoa Doga? I haven't heard that name in a long time. I discovered that program myself in the early 00s and used it to make space ship cg videos, which was probably the ideal entry point to cg animation as I didn't need to animate anything on the ships, just set a line for them to move on to show them flying.

As a child of the MS-DOS days who thought Raptor, Stargunner, Overkill, and Tyrian were amazingly fun, lemme tell ya that SideLine blows them all out of the water in terms of feeling like a properly tight arcade game:

I found a DOS shmup I'd never heard of before, Slordax. Pretty early in the grand scheme of things, think its from 1990, and by the makers of Commander Keen, before they officially started ID Software and made Commander Keen...

The game seemed like Tyrian, Raptor and Xenon, Slordax: The Unknown Enemy is the very good shooter game and it's old-school DOS game wayback then.

Isin-Densin Zero is a one stage score attack PC shmup from 1999 with a grappling hand that you use to perform combos on enemies and capture civilians for points or lives. It's pretty fun, I'd recommend it!
There's also Isin Densin (of which Zero is a prequel/spin-off) which seems to be a "full" release from around the same time, but from what I played it wasn't nearly as interesting to play.
