Sony has told the media that the launch of the console will be delayed due to difficulties in finalizing the Blu-ray drive's specs. An unnamed spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment in Japan admitted that PlayStation 3 launch could be delayed.
Meanwhile in the rest of the world, kids are enjoying their new 360's, old school gamers play with emulators and PCBs and moms everywhere are making delicious PB&J sandwiches with JIF(Tm), both in chunky and non-chunky varieties.

Speci, you are awesome.
Granted, I already knew Sony was going to delay it. Anyone who keeps up with the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray thing knows that Blu-Ray really isn't ready to be on the market.

And this news comes in on my birthday, how awesome is that?
Merrill Lynch's recent report on PS3 suggested the machine would colst around $800 to produce, and would be delayed.
Losing several hundred a console seems steep, even if that goes down in a year. Can anyone explain this? Could it really cost $800?
Happy birthday JP.
Thanks Neon and sven666.
As for how the PS3 could cost $800:
Well, I'm sure the Cell Processor costs a nice chunk of cash as its still alpha technology. Blu-Ray drives probably wouldn't be any cheaper as the lower end Blu-Ray players are supposed to cost $1800. Couple that in with all the Blue Tooth (why doesn't Sony just make the color of the PS3 blue? All this damn blue technology) and all the other functions the PS3 will offer (wireless router, shit ton of connections) and viola! You have one expensive ass console.
Seriously, there's a lot of thought that goes into making a console, and affordability is a big one. No matter what, retards will buy this thing stright out of the gates regardless of price.
I'm hoping, although a long shot, for Sony to lose some footing in this generation and have Microsoft get some more interest from the Japanese developers. Would make for a more interesting industry, at least for the moment.
If Sony release PS3 even close to $500USD, the only people that are going to buy it are the rich folks. Devcos will realize they are aiming PS3 games at a small userbase and will move away from Sony's machine.. its economics.
Alot of software sold on ps2 right now is in the budget range, in the sub $30 barrier which Sony rely's on for mass market penetration.. They know this.. PS3 is a doomed project in its current market model.

As far as Blu-Ray not being ready for the market, aren't there already Blu-Ray DVD players for sale? I know I've seen some in one of the many catalogues that we get at our house. Granted, it was $1000, but that means that it's still in the market; expensive as it is.
Only time can tell, of course, but Mircrosoft may well be the winner here-at least, that's how things are looking so far.

I don't think that would completely kill it-companies still produced games for the Neo Geo AES when that came out, despite it's cost. And it still has quite a loyal fanbase.
And, once again, where the heck is all this $30 PS2 Software??? Pac Man World 3 is $30, but that's just Namco pricing it smart, IMO. New PS2 games still cost $49.99, AFIK. There are a lot of budget titles, but AFIK, that's simply due to the huge number of games that the PS2 has that are several years old.

Depends what you mean on winning. He who loses least?
Microsoft are still sitting on a huge deficit with XB360.. Just because XB360 is out doesn't mean by any stretch of the imagination that its successful. 50 million units is successful, 360 might only make 10 million sales.
A delay for PS3 even for 1 more year is more feasible than releasing it now.. As for BR players, they are huge, they don't play movies and they are not working with cell technology.

I've yet to see it happen as well, but they simply cannot afford to launch a rich-kid's console at this point. But that's their only option, unless they completely re-think the BR thing, which would involve taking out the BR DVD drive, and making the system without it, and BR games.
So, worst-case scenario is that the PS3 tanks because of an outrageous price tag. Best-case scenario involves Sony launching the PS3 late; either way, they stand a pretty good chance of loosing their top spot in the home console market, and taking a serious financial loss in the process.

well it sure won't kill sony as a company they own like half the music industry, a good portion of the movie industry and they still are a major presence in other home electronics.
but it might mean that the ps3 and ps-whatever might become marginalized enough that sony just pulls itself out of the console game, still leaves the handheld, computer and game developement business of course all of which are still plenty lucritive.
unlikely but you never know
I think that Sony can wait it up until next Christmas or a little later to release the PS3. The PS2 still has enough juice to give the Xbox360 and Revolution a run for their money.

True, and whenever it comes out, it will have the backwards compatibility feature. It's this, plus the variety of the games, that has put the PS2 on top. It certainly doesn't have the best graphics of the 3; I own a Cube and an XBOX, and both blow the PS2 away in that category.
But, the latest rumors are that Sony will not launch the system, at least over here, until 2007, because they are re-thinking the whole BR thing. If that's true, I doubt that they could get it ready by Christmas this year, and who knows what'll happen at E3.

PS3: minus one MEMORY CARD SUPPORT.

Sony screwed up though, there is very little interest in PS2 software right now because of the lack of new games coming out for it. The push to go into nextgen development in favor of ps2 means there is a big black hole between now and when ps3 is released.
I'm actually surprised many devcos were in favor of dumping PS2 as a platform to program for.. with 100 million units out there and everyone else jumping ship, I would have used this opportunity to support it and cash in.

What? The PS2 is getting more software than any of the other consoles at the moment. There's still blockbusters getting released. Most recently there is Onimusha 4. Later this year there's FFXII and Kingdom Hearts 2 (not that I like 'em but they're major titles.) Then, there's a bunch of other games like Disgaea 2, Time Crisis 4 (not sure about a port but very possible), that new Ace Combat, etc. And I'm sure there will be a lot more announced after E3 this year *YS Oath in Felghana, please Konami*
What's the other consoles got? Gamecube? Zelda. Xbox? no idea. Xbox360? it's got some stuff but not much.

The way I see it is, the longer sony take the better, the more time they spend thinking about the console and making the changes, the better it will be. Were'all basically forced to buy it anyway.
Whats so great about blu ray anyway? sure it'll be hard to pirate for a while but why use it?
Much larger disc space means we may be able to stick with the format for quite some time. And people always yearn for times of peace and certainty, so if Blu-Ray works, then the process of evolution benefits everybody.

Your right in a way, there is more stuff on PS2 than the other consoles. But thats only because of the transition period the competition is about to go through or is going through (360). I believe Nintendo can release whenever they want due to the simplicity of the hardware, 360 is already out.. But Sony have months (or year) to go before PS3 is even considered a reality...Seems like arcade and RPG genres are more supported then by ps2 at the moment.. Onimusha is the only game holding my interest out of that list.
that means potentially new projects could be started on PS2 and finished before PS3.

So Sony isn't going through a transition period? Maybe they aren't if they plan to release next year, but they could be if they are going to release let's say by Christmas. It's just plain speculation from our part. Transition or not, it doesn't change the fact that the PS2 still has enough juice to take on the XB360 and Rev until the release of the PS3. What does it matter that Sony is going to release their system later? The PS3 will probably ride on the momentum of the PS2, and it'll also be getting its own games to hype itself up. Besides, the XB360 doesn't have the game power yet to get ahead of Sony by a lot and the Revolution doesn't even have games announced AFAIK.

This is Sony you're talking about. The longer they take with it, the more things that are going to be cut from it so they don't go even deeper into debt with the launch. Some people are saying Blu-Ray is being cuit, but I think thats silly, since the only reason the PS3 exists is so Sony can shove another pointless format down the consumers' throats.
UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:and the Revolution doesn't even have games announced AFAIK.
As far as YOU know indeed.
I truly believe that based on what we know the Revolution is much more finished for a launch than PS3.
Sony are in A LOT of trouble as a company atm. They are relying much on the success of PS3 atm. PS3 should get Blue Ray in peoples homes, if PS3 fails then theres a good chance Blue Ray "fails". And that last thing might just be the executional shot...
